The world’s energy system will change in big ways as a result of the Iran war, the CEOs of key oil and gas companies told investors on their earnings calls over the past two weeks.

Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has resulted in the loss of nearly a billion barrels of oil, with the shortage growing worse every day the sea lane remains closed.

The disruption has demonstrated the fragility of the global energy system, said Olivier Le Peuch, CEO of the big oilfield services company SLB.

“It’s going to drive fundamental structural change across the energy landscape,” said Lorenzo Simonelli, the CEO of Baker Hughes, a competitor of SLB.

Governments and industry will prioritize energy security, Le Peuch and Simonelli said. It is “no longer simply a talking point,” said Jeffrey Miller, the CEO of Halliburton, the other big oilfield services firm.

Investment in oil exploration and production will increase as a consequence, the CEOs said. Low carbon solutions like geothermal, nuclear and grid modernization will continue to see investment, Simonelli said.

“It’s not just about increasing energy supply,” the Baker Hughes CEO said. “It’s about the robust and resilient energy infrastructure and greater redundancy, diversifying infrastructure, reducing reliance on any single large-scale assets.”

Diversifying supplies

The closure of Hormuz has underscored the dependence particularly of Asian economies on the Middle East for crude oil and liquefied natural gas imports.

“Obviously, people are going to reassess their energy security and how they ensure that, going forward, they don’t have the same exposure,” Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods said.

Governments will aim to diversify their energy supplies, the oilfield service CEOs said. They will also have to rebuild oil stockpiles that have taken a hit due to the war, the executives said.

“There’s going to be a rebuilding of global inventories above historical levels to ensure that energy security is at the foremost,” Simonelli said.

U.S. crude oil will become more important that it has ever been in helping the world preserve energy security, said Kaes Van’t Hof, the CEO of Diamondback Energy, one of the biggest U.S. shale oil producers. U.S. crude exports have hit record highs during the war.

The oil market is now “fundamentally tighter” due to supply disruption, Miller said. The market has shifted from expectations of a surplus this year to a big deficit, he said.

This will support elevated oil prices after the war is over, Le Peuch said. Higher prices will encourage investment in offshore and deepwater opportunities in Africa, the Americas and Asia, he said.

“Africa [represents] one of the most compelling long-term opportunities, with a significant base of underdeveloped oil and gas resources,” the CEO of SLB said. “We expect portfolio allocation to shift more favorably towards this region over time.”

The Iran war is starting to show up in the U.S. economy in ways both obvious and not so much, with soaring energy costs leading the impact and potential hits on broader growth simmering beneath the surface.

Though recession fears have grown since the fighting began more than six weeks ago, most economists think the war will have only modest effects on gross domestic product — maybe shaving off a few tenths of a percentage point overall.

But there’s an important caveat, mainly around duration: Should the current ceasefire hold, inflationary impacts will wear off. If fighting resumes, however, the future becomes much murkier, threatening the fragile growth the economy has seen over the past two quarters.

“It’s going to gouge out some of the growth, but we’ll weather through it,” said Mike Skordeles, head of U.S. economics at Truist Advisory Services. “The bigger issue is the uncertainty.”

Indeed, uncertainty has hung over the U.S. economy for most the past year, ever since President Donald Trump unveiled his “liberation day” tariffs in early April 2025 and continuing through what has become an increasingly muscular and aggressive foreign policy.

The war has intensified the pressure, resulting in a host of questions: whether the inflation surge during the war is temporary, how much conditions will affect the consumers who drive most U.S. economic growth, and the extent to which less energy-independent nations are hurt by the war fallout.

Underlining all of it is how the Federal Reserve and other central banks will respond.

“Iran’s important. The price of crude oil is important. Other things matter more. Incomes and other things are continuing to hang in there,” Skordeles said. “The other piece of that uncertainty is by the Fed that’s delaying — and I think it’s delaying, not canceling — any sort of additional cuts, pushing them into the back half or even later in the year. That means you’re elevating borrowing costs for consumers.”

Today, the Federal Reserve Board released a trio of proposals to modernize the U.S. capital framework which, if adopted, could fundamentally alter the cost and accessibility of institutional Bitcoin services. While the 14-page Board memorandum focuses on the technicalities of the “Basel III Endgame” and “GSIB surcharges,” our analysis suggests the most significant development for corporate treasuries is hidden in the proposed recalibration of operational risk.

1. Shattering the “Toxic Asset” Capital Barrier

For years, the primary hurdle for corporations looking to hold Bitcoin through traditional banks has been the “advanced approaches” to capital requirements. These internal, model-based assessments often resulted in punitive capital hits for digital asset activities, effectively labeling them “toxic” on a bank’s balance sheet. Under previous interpretations of the Basel SCO60 standard, certain digital assets were hit with a 1,250% risk weight… This proposal seeks to move beyond those models by recommending the elimination of the advanced approaches entirely for Category I and II firms. In their place, the Fed proposes a single, “expanded risk-based approach” designed to be more consistent and risk-sensitive across all asset classes.

In practice, a 1,250% risk weight combined with an 8% minimum capital ratio creates a 100% capital requirement. This “dollar-for-dollar” mandate made bank intermediation uneconomic, functioning as a de facto prohibition rather than objective risk management. Today’s proposal recommends eliminating the advanced approaches entirely for Category I and II firms. In their place, the Fed is introducing a single, “expanded risk-based approach” designed to be more consistent and risk-sensitive.

2. The Massive “Custody Service” Win

Critically, the proposed framework for operational risk is designed to “appropriately reflect business activities,” specifically naming custody services as a key area for this recalibration. The Fed staff noted that certain elements of the previous framework resulted in “excessive requirements for traditional banking activities.”

If Bitcoin custody is treated under this broader service definition, it would allow Tier 1 banks to offer these services without the prohibitive capital overhead that has previously driven up fees for corporate clients. By ensuring that operational risk requirements for custody are better aligned with actual historical risk, the Fed is signaling a move away from using punitive weights as a normative judgment.

3. A 4.8% Liquidity Injection and G-SIB Indexing

Got it. Keeping your structure intact, here is the updated Section 3 with the technical refinements (G-SIB indexing and capital relief) and the original bullet formatting you preferred.

3. A 4.8% Liquidity Injection and G-SIB Indexing

Perhaps the most notable projection for institutional adoption is the estimated impact on bank balance sheets. According to the…

Ahead of a trip to Morocco in October two years ago, Virga began her preparation.

“At the end of August, I started doing a little extra work once a week for a couple hours,” she said. She also packs her belongings three to four weeks in advance to avoid last-minute stress.

Her approach echoes advice from American psychologist, Guy Winch, a member of the American Psychological Association, who told CNBC Travel that planning ahead is key. He shared three tips to fully rest and recharge on holidays.

1. Slowing down before the trip

It can take days — sometimes weeks — for people to slow down after being in a constant state of busyness, Winch said.

“What usually happens is that people try and get ahead at work before they leave for the vacation,” he said. “Before they leave the house … they’re already stressed out and tired.”

That’s why, on short getaways, travelers may only find themselves settling into the rhythm of a vacation just as the trip is ending.

The solution isn’t to stop everything, but to ease into a slower rhythm.

“So you’re not in your fifth gear, you’re in your third gear,” he said. “It’s a little bit easier and quicker to go down to first.”

2. Follow your own pace

Vacations are relaxing when the activities are planned according to one’s physical and mental capacity. One way to do this is to focus on experiences, said Winch.

When Virga, who is a mother of two young children, goes on trips, she no longer crams it with activities. Instead, she searches for calming experiences for the family.

That includes “some childcare component, where I could go get a massage, or I could go do some yoga, and my kids are being looked after,” she said.

It’s no longer about ticking off the perfect bucket list, but to do activities that interest them, she said.

“I’m a very big believer now that traditional vacation is not built for parents, like that idea of going on a cruise ship … even an all-inclusive resort,” she said. “Kids are eating all this food that’s really bad for them, there’s just so much overstimulation.”

Managing expectations is also a huge part of making vacations a relaxing experience. Marissa Goldstein, a mother of four, believes that the moment parents start chasing the perfect holiday, they’re setting themselves up for failure, she said.

“They’re going to end up … either feeling like I’m a horrible parent, my kids are terrible,” she said. “[Or thinking] ‘Why can’t we travel like everyone else that I see on…

Michael Saylor, Executive Chairman of Strategy, took the stage at Bitcoin 2025 delivering a keynote titled “21 Ways to Wealth.” He stated: “This speech is for you. I’ve traveled the world and told countries, institutional investors, and even the disembodied spirits of our children’s children why they need Bitcoin. This is for every individual, every family, every small business. It’s for everybody.”

He began with clarity. “The first way to wealth is clarity,” he said. “Clarity comes the moment you realize Bitcoin is capital—perfected capital, programmable capital, incorruptible capital.” For Saylor, every thoughtful individual on Earth will ultimately seek such pristine capital, and every AI system will prefer it as well.

The second path is conviction. Bitcoin, he said, will appreciate faster than every other asset, because it’s engineered for performance. “It’s going to grow faster than real estate or collectibles. It is the most efficient store of value in human history.”

The third way is courage. “If you’re going to get rich on Bitcoin, you need courage,” he warned. “Wealth favors those who embrace intelligent monetary risk. Some people will get left behind. Others will juggle it. But the bold will feed the fire—sell your bonds, buy Bitcoin. An extraordinary explosion of value is coming.”

Fourth comes cooperation. “You are more powerful if you have the full support of your family. Your children have time and potential. The secret is transferring capital into their hands. Families that move in unity are unstoppable.”

The fifth is capability. “Master AI,” he said. “In 2025, everything you can imagine is at your fingertips—wisdom, analysis, creativity. Ask AI, argue with it, use it. You can become a super genius. Don’t put your ego first—put your interests first. Your family will thank you.”

Saylor’s sixth way to wealth is composition: construct legal entities that scale your strategy and protect your assets. “Ask the AI and figure it out. You can work hard, or you can work smart. This year, everyone should be operating like the most sophisticated millionaire family office.”

The seventh is citizenship. Choose your economic nexus carefully—“domicile where sovereignty respects your freedom,” he said. “This isn’t just about this year—it’s about this century.”

Eighth is civility. “Respect the natural power structures of the world. Respect the force of nature,” he explained. “If you want to generate wealth in the Bitcoin universe, don’t fight unnecessarily. Find common ground. Inflation and distraction are your enemies.”

Ninth is corporation. “A well-structured corporation is the most powerful wealth engine on Earth. Families are powerful. Partnerships are even more powerful. But corporations can scale globally. What is your vehicle? What is your path?”

The tenth way is focus. “Just because you can do a thing doesn’t mean you should,” he…

Jenna Kardal was floored by the jaw-dropping initial quote she received when seeking out car insurance — a shock after having driven for years under her parents’ plan and since her car was bought used, already about a decade old.

“I was like, ‘You cannot be serious,'” the now 30-year-old Calgary driver recalled in an interview with Cost of Living. “What all is included with that — and how can we shave that down?'”

Then in graduate school, Kardal said this was a common conversation for her at the time, to try saving money wherever possible.

She ultimately netted a fresh quote of $130 per month to insure her car, a 2002 Nissan Maxima she lovingly named Maxwell. That fell to $108 after a couple more years of good driving.

While not the most exciting household expense, car insurance is a necessity for drivers. Yet with the cost of insurance on the rise, experts say taking the time to review your driving habits and policy details can mean a welcome difference in what you pay.

Rising premiums

Car insurance premiums saw a brief period of decline in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, influenced in part by people driving less along with discounts and rebates offered by government insurers in provinces like British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, according to Statistics Canada.

Still, nationally, premiums have been trending up in the past decade: 36 per cent from 2014 to 2024, the agency said in an April 2025 report.

There are many reasons for the higher costs, from increases in auto theft to cars filled with high-tech components that cost more to build from the get go, according to insurance industry expert Sherif Gemayel.

“Replacing a windshield is not just a windshield anymore,” said Calgary-based Gemayel, CEO of Trufla, a company providing tech solutions for the industry. For instance, a windshield in a new car might have cameras or sensors integrated, so it’s not necessarily a straightforward repair.

“Fixing those vehicles is a lot more expensive. Replacing the vehicles … is a lot more expensive. And the cost of litigation has gotten a lot more expensive.”

Inflation has also meant costlier repairs, replacement parts and labour, added Aaron Sutherland, vice-president of Pacific and western regions for the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Sutherland predicts the Canada-U.S. trade war, and more frequent extreme weather events — like floods, wildfires and hailstorms — will also exacerbate rising premiums. That’s all the more reason he believes Canadians should ensure “you’re getting the best bang for your buck” by reviewing their policies.

When the Fed hiked rates in 2022 and 2023, the interest rates on most consumer loans quickly followed suit. Even though the central bank lowered its benchmark rate three times in 2024, those consumer rates are still elevated, and are mostly staying high, for now.

Many credit cards have a variable rate, so there’s a direct connection to the Fed’s benchmark.

With a rate cut likely postponed until July, the average credit card annual percentage rate has stayed just over 20% this year, according to Bankrate — not far from 2024’s all-time high. Last year, banks raised credit card interest rates to record levels and some issuers said they are keeping those higher rates in place.

At the same time, “more people are carrying debt because of higher prices,” said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate. Total credit card debt and average balances are also at record highs.

Mortgage rates don’t directly track the Fed, but are largely tied to Treasury yields and the economy. As a result, uncertainty over tariffs and worries about a possible recession are dragging those rates down slightly.

The average rate for a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage is 6.91% as of May 6, while the 15-year, fixed-rate is 6.22%, according to Mortgage News Daily.

Mortgage rates “are showing signs of life after a slow couple of years,” said Michele Raneri, vice president and head of U.S. research and consulting at TransUnion.

But for potential home buyers, that’s not enough of a decline to give the housing market a boost. “Many borrowers are reluctant to take on a loan at today’s rates, particularly if they currently have a loan at a significantly lower rate,” Raneri said.

3. Auto loans

Auto loan rates are tied to several factors, but the Fed is one of the most significant.

With the Fed’s benchmark holding steady, the average rate on a five-year new car loan was 7.1% in April, while the average auto loan rate for used cars is 10.9%, according to Edmunds. At the end of 2024, those rates were 6.6% and 10.8%, respectively.

With interest rates near historic highs and car prices rising — along with pressure from Trump’s 25% tariffs on imported vehicles — new-car shoppers are facing bigger monthly payments and an affordability crunch, according to Joseph Yoon, Edmunds’ consumer insights analyst.

“Consumers continue to face a challenging market, now with added uncertainty of the tariff impact on their next vehicle purchase,” Yoon said. “Prices and interest rates remain elevated, and there’s no fast or easy answer as to how the tariffs will affect inventory levels — and therefore pricing — as buyers try to make sense of an increasingly complex shopping journey.”

Federal student loan rates are fixed for the life of the loan, so most…
