Ford has rehired experienced human engineers to help address the shortcomings of artificial intelligence (AI) tools meant to tackle quality issues in the automaker’s production processes.

The hiring push helped Ford top the JD Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) for the first time since 2010 amid improvements in the quality of its new vehicles, and follows some hard-learned lessons about the ability of AI to replace human knowledge in production processes.

“Artificial intelligence is a fantastic tool, but it’s only as good as the information you use to train it,” Charles Poon, Ford’s vice president of vehicle hardware engineering, said on a press call Wednesday, according to a report by Bloomberg.

“Over prior years, we didn’t pay as much attention as we should have to the experience of our most knowledgeable engineers that have been with us through many product cycles,” he said.

“Mistakenly, we thought that by just introducing artificial intelligence and ingesting the design requirements that we had, that would produce a high quality product,” Poon said.

He also noted that the AI tools lacked the training and expertise that veteran technicians have, and many of the company’s veteran technicians left Ford before their knowledge could be used to improve the performance of the AI tools.

“We recognized that for us to enhance some of our automation and machine learning and artificial intelligence tools, we needed to ensure that they were trained by the most experienced individuals,” Poon said.

The Detroit giant said that it has hired about 300 veteran engineers to work in its vehicle engineering division in the last few years.

“Free from daily production schedules, these engineers now act as internal auditors, running mandatory weekly design reviews to hunt for and eliminate potential failure points before blueprints ever reach the factory floor,” Ford said in a release.

Ford Chief Operating Officer Kumar Galhotra said that the experienced engineers and technical specialists were “at the heart” of the company’s efforts to improve production quality by addressing process issues before they’re incorporated into workflows.

The digital payments company said the tools are designed to reduce the costs and frustration of “outdated” dispute processes for multiple entities involved in the payments process: merchants, issuers and acquirers.

“Some of the challenges are these back-office systems are still largely manual,” Andrew Torre, Visa’s president of value-added services, told CNBC. “We really had to think differently about how we approach this at scale.”

In 2025, Torre said, Visa processed more than 106 million charge disputes globally, marking a 35% increase since 2019.

“Our goal is to streamline this as much as possible,” Torre said. “We’d love to be able to see that growth rate come down.”

Visa’s new tools are part of a larger push by major banks and financial institutions to incorporate AI into their businesses — both internally and in consumer-facing applications. JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs have both said they’re already using AI to hire fewer people. BNY spent $3.8 billion on technology in 2025, or about 19% of its revenue.

Visa said three of its six new tools focus on merchants, allowing them to address potential disputes before they escalate, managing disputes with generative AI responses and providing a deeper level of detail on order insights to manage confusion over unfamiliar charges.

For example, Torre said, many disputes are borne out of cardholders not recognizing a specific charge on their statements. With the new tool, Visa will be able to provide further details to financial institutions to show cardholders that data at a deeper level, according to the company.

The other three tools are built for issuers and acquirers, using predictive AI models to aid in case-by-case analysis, analyzing documents for summaries and auto fill and establishing an AI-powered dispute platform to manage the entire process in one location, Visa said.

“We’ll be able to get them insights and data so they can move from being reactive to proactive,” Torre said.

Torre said Visa’s new AI tools are part of a broader host of solutions for consumers, including a subscription manager announced last week that allows cardholders to cancel unnecessary subscriptions directly on the manager.

The automation will save time, money and unnecessary confusion for both parties, he added. Most of the tools will be generally available later this year, the company said.

“We really believe that disputes in this solution makes it much easier to manage and resolve,” Torre said. “We think it has better outcomes for everyone.”

With pumpkin spice in the air, thoughts are turning to the biggest event of the year… No, not the curling championships — Black Friday and the start of the gifting season.

Here at the Investing News Network, our team aims to provide relevant information to help readers make informed investment decisions on the sectors we cover, from precious to base metals and beyond.

However, with the holiday season upon us, we wanted to take a look at products that might bring physical metals — and maybe a bit of levity — to your gift-giving strategy. Here are some great options to help you succeed.

<div class="rebellt-item

                Precious metals bars and coins

No metals-focused gift guide would be complete without options for bars or coins.

Even though precious metals bars and coins are a standard investment mechanism, they’re also prized by collectors for their artistic and unique qualities. Among the top destinations for collectors is the Royal Canadian Mint (TSX:MNT). Every year, it releases limited-edition coins and bars in gold, silver and platinum with mintages as low as 30.

As a Canadian company, many of the mint’s products feature typical Canadian themes of maple leaves and polar bears, but it also sells internationally produced coins like this 2 ounce, high-relief silver gorilla coin.

For those opting for a more investment-oriented gift, First Mint might be an excellent choice.

It was established by the silver-mining company First Majestic Silver (TSX:AG,NYSE:AG) in 2023 as a means for the company to expand its direct-to-consumer bullion sales. As such, it offers bars that range from 1 ounce to 1 kilogram, but also produces coins, including a series designed around each year’s Chinese Zodiac.

Now that precious metals are achieving more mainstream appeal, gift givers can even make purchases at Costco (NASDAQ:COST). It started selling gold bars in mid-2023, but has since expanded to include silver and platinum products. It offers competitive pricing with premiums ranging from 0.8 to 2.4 percent over spot.

Executive members still receive a 2 percent reward on purchases, meaning buyers could pay less than the spot price when everything is factored in. Costco even offers a handy calculator to help.

                Whimsical precious metals “toys”

Although coins and bars are great gifts for investors and collectors alike, they only scratch the surface.

The holidays have always been a time for whimsy; many people grew up receiving toys that brought joy well into adulthood, perhaps none more so than Lego. For precious metals enthusiasts who maintain their own horde of building blocks, there may be no greater gift than these .999 fine 1 ounce silver blocks by Monarch Precious Metals.

The digital asset exchange announced Wednesday that it’s rolling out a major slate of new products designed to turn Coinbase into a one-stop financial app, expanding into stocks, more advanced trading, and prediction markets, while doubling down on its on-chain ecosystem and new tools for businesses, developers, and automated financial guidance.

While many of these offerings have been telegraphed for months, Coinbase says the products are now built, and ready to go.

CEO Brian Armstrong is looking to make his platform the place to trade everything.

That includes stocks, a streamlined futures and perpetuals experience, and prediction markets through Kalshi, alongside a tokenization roadmap aimed at eventually bringing more traditional assets on-chain, including equities.

The area of prediction markets, in particular, is quickly getting crowded.

DraftKings has moved to buy its own exchange, FanDuel is teaming up with CME, and Polymarket is entering the U.S. through a newly approved venue. Robinhood, meanwhile, is putting LedgerX at the center of its regulated push.

The defining rivalry in the space remains Kalshi versus Polymarket, regulated rails versus crypto-native liquidity.

Armstrong said the category’s appeal isn’t just trading, but its insight into sentiment, and what people think will happen next on any given topic.

“If you look at things like economic indicators … or elections, people are using prediction markets to try to figure out what is going to happen next month,” Armstrong told CNBC. “Maybe1% of people use it as an asset class to trade, and 99% of people are using it as a way to figure out what’s going to happen — almost like a competitor to traditional media or maybe even entertainment.”

In the company’s third-quarter earnings call with analysts in October, Armstrong showed just how easily prediction market wagers can be manipulated, rattling off several words that were being bet on.

“I was a little distracted because I was tracking the prediction market about what Coinbase will say on their next earnings call,” Armstrong said. “And I just want to add here the words bitcoin, ethereum, blockchain, staking and Web3 to make sure we get those in before the end of the call.”

Robinhood underscored that shift this week by expanding prediction markets into sports-style contracts that resemble parlays and prop bets, and by touting the category as its fastest-growing business by revenue.

Coinbase is now bringing the same kind of outcome trading into its own ecosystem, but as a part of a much wider bet that the next-generation brokerage is a single app that blends traditional assets, derivatives, and on-chain rails.

Coinbase is pairing the trading expansion with a tokenization roadmap that signals…

Homebuilding has long been one of the slowest industries to modernize, and commercial construction isn’t far behind. Its scale is enormous, and yet it remains one of the least digitized industries in the world.

That lack of innovation in commercial technology contributes to outdated documentation and errors in tasks that then have to be redone as well as administrative drag. It’s a huge drain on time, budgets and materials and can lead to costly delays and unnecessary environmental waste.

All told, it contributes to nearly $1 trillion in lost productivity each year, according to an August 2024 report from McKinsey Global Institute. Historically, construction companies spent an average of less than 1% of revenues on IT, less than a third of what is common in automotive and aerospace, according to the report.

Sarah Buchner learned all this the hard way. The daughter of a carpenter in Austria, she came to the U.S. to learn construction and worked her way up to foreman, superintendent and eventually contractor.

“At the peak, I was running a $400 million high-rise, 600 guys working for me in the job. And on that specific construction side, I had a fatality, which in construction happens, unfortunately, a lot,” she said. “But I was, I think, very young, and couldn’t fully process what was happening.”

So Buchner decided to build a health and safety app, switching careers from construction to construction software and construction tech. A decade later, with the proliferation of AI, she launched Trunk Tools, a generative AI platform trained on real construction workflows. It automates some of the more tedious tasks and also pinpoints project risks and simplifies documents.

“We take all of the unstructured documentation on a construction site, and we use different AI and machine learning tools to restructure it,” Buchner explained, noting that an average high-rise project in New York City, costing about half a billion dollars, would require about 3.5 million pages of documentation.

“Those pages change every single day, because the planning isn’t finished by the time you start construction,” said Buchner.

So contractors often get conflicting orders and can’t search the documents to clarify. For…

There’s a suite of new and upcoming tools designed to make translation between languages easier and faster than ever before — some, with the help of artificial intelligence.

At their I/O 2025 event, for example, Google revealed a live translation service it’s added to its Google Meet videoconferencing tool. A demonstration showed two people speaking to each other — one in English, one in Spanish — with their speech translated into the other language with a short, seconds-long delay. The computer-generated voice mimicked the original speaker’s voice and intonation.

Roger J. Kreuz, a professor at the University of Memphis who specializes in the psychology of language, said Google’s live translation demonstration was “a pretty amazing technological achievement,” but its staged nature left questions about how it will work in a real meeting.

“Conversations are rarely as clean as the conversation that we saw in the demo,” he said. “They typically will overlap or interrupt, and I can only imagine the cacophony that would occur if people were kind of excitedly talking back and forth … and voices cutting in and then cutting back out again. How is that controlled?”

Experts caution tools like this raise big questions about what might get lost in translation. Because while tech companies often tout these tools as scientific and objective, language doesn’t really work that way in the real world.

In March, Bloomberg reported that Apple is planning to update their AirPod earbuds to allow them to translate languages from speech it hears on the fly. (Google’s rival product, the Pixel Buds, have had this feature for years, the report said.)

Apple’s reported foray into the live translation game is notable, says WIRED journalist and senior business editor Louise Mataskis, because the company typically doesn’t introduce new tech features as quickly as others.

“They tend to hold back until that technology is really mature and that there is a good sense that it’s gonna be reliable. So I think that this shows that this technology is really starting to mature,” she told The Sunday Magazine’s Piya Chattopadhyay.

Google’s speech translation currently only features translation between English and Spanish, and it’s available only in the U.S. to anyone paying for their Google AI Pro premium services. The company says it doesn’t save users’ audio, no AI models are trained using your voice, and the feature is opt-in only.

A representative from Google told CBC the service will add more languages “in the next few weeks.” They said the feature uses an AI large language model called AudioLM, developed by Google DeepMind.

‘Do you have a toilet in your house?’

Mataskis says language tools can help people practice learning languages, but…

“We introduced something called Gems, which is sort of like your own personal AI assistant for whatever you want it to be. So I have a travel Gem in Gemini…it’s the chat function where I consistently go back to it for travel planning. And it’s really learned my preferences, which is great.
