Southeast Asia is embracing artificial intelligence at a rapid pace. But the business of making money from AI is about more than getting consumers to pay for it.

Generative AI adoption in the region has reached around 243 million people in less than three years, according to the annual e-Conomy SEA report released Wednesday by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company.

That is equivalent to 58% of the working population, with adoption occurring four times faster than the uptake of mobile internet. Yet only 1% to 2% of the region’s population pays for personal AI subscriptions, highlighting a gap between widespread adoption and direct consumer spending.

Florian Hoppe, a partner at Bain & Company, told CNBC in an interview that businesses have found other ways to generate AI’s commercial value from online shopping to digital advertising.

Companies have been using AI to improve e-commerce conversion rates and handle routine customer inquiries, allowing employees to focus on other tasks, he added.

Consumers may also be paying indirectly for AI when purchasing products developed using the technology.

The findings come as Southeast Asia’s digital economy is projected to grow 17% to $368 billion in gross merchandise value this year, with the market expected to exceed $1 trillion by 2035, according to the report.

Hoppe also pointed to another factor driving the region’s enthusiasm for AI: its willingness to embrace new technologies as consumers have shown what he described as “pragmatic optimism” toward AI, embracing the technology for its practical benefits.

The region has historically ranked among the most active users of major digital platforms on a per-capita basis.

“They’re very experimental,” Hoppe said, describing consumers’ openness to new tools and services. He also added that in terms of individual markets, Singapore is among Southeast Asia’s early leaders in AI adoption.

That openness is extending to more autonomous uses of AI, with 75% of users willing to let AI agents find the best prices and complete purchases on their behalf. The report shows that confidence is also growing, with 62% of respondents saying they trust AI tools more than they did a year ago.

Despite the rapid adoption, people in Southeast Asia still use AI far less than those in the U.S., with usage per person at just 10% of U.S. levels.

For businesses, however, the potential returns are becoming more tangible. About 69% of shoppers use AI to compare complex purchases such as electronics, while early case studies show AI helping businesses boost conversion rates by 10% year on year and increase the average amount customers spend per order by as much as 75%.

An example is Shopee, a Southeast Asian e-commerce platform, which now handles approximately 80% of customer queries through AI chatbots, helping cut its cost per customer contact by 30% year on year.

In online media, Hoppe pointed to a “significant uplift” in advertising click-through rates and conversions through AI-powered…

The sinking AI trade and hotter-than-expected inflation data rattled last week’s stock market. But solid bank earnings and a rotation beyond tech gave us reasons for optimism. The Nasdaq’s 4.5% weekly decline broke a four-week winning streak and marked the worst weekly decline for the tech-heavy index since June. The S & P 500 fell 2% last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average bucked the trend — gaining 0.7% as investors rotated into healthcare, consumer staples, and other sectors less dependent on the artificial intelligence boom. The sell-off accelerated Wednesday after hotter-than-expected consumer inflation data raised concerns that the Federal Reserve could keep interest rates elevated for longer. September’s consumer price index rose 3.7% from a year earlier, above the 3.6% expected, while core inflation also came in slightly hotter than anticipated. Thursday’s producer price index offered little relief, jumping 1.3% for the month and 6.3% annually, the biggest annual and monthly gains since March 2022 and December 2022, respectively. Higher inflation, fueled partly by elevated oil prices, threatens to push up borrowing costs and complicate the massive AI infrastructure buildout. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan warned Monday that access to capital could become the industry’s next major constraint. Our cybersecurity stocks were crushed last week, while Meta Platforms and Microsoft had some of the week’s rare bright spots in tech. Against that backdrop, we continued diversifying beyond the AI trade — adding to Kimberly-Clark on Tuesday as its Kenvue acquisition moved closer to completion. We exited our remaining Honeywell Technologies position on Wednesday to replenish cash. We trimmed Cardinal Health Thursday to lock in profits after its recent rally and bought more Bank of New York following strong earnings Here’s a closer look at the three developments that shaped the market week. AI’s sell-off makes the case for diversification The AI trade took another hit last week as investors grew concerned about rising borrowing costs and mounting competition in the semiconductor industry. Memory stocks — including Micron , Sandisk , Western Digital , and Seagate — fell after Chinese rival CXMT announced progress on a more efficient chip structure , raising fears of increased competition and a potential supply glut. The iShares Semiconductor ETF extended its losing streak to nine straight sessions, its longest in more than a decade, while the VanEck Semiconductor ETF was down 10% for the week, its worst week since July. Concerns that tech companies are borrowing too much for the AI buildout sent neoclouds like CoreWeave , which has seen its total debt rise to more than $51 billion , plunging 25% last week. Perhaps even more concerning than the stock rout has been the jump in CoreWeave corporate bond yields and spike in credit default swaps , a kind of insurance policy on debt. Our cyber stocks Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike were our worst…

Over the weekend, CXMT announced significant progress in developing a new chip architecture, designed to increase memory density by packing more data into a smaller space.

CXMT is China’s leading rival to the likes of Micron and South Korean heavyweights SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. Analysts broadly see CXMT as trailing the U.S. and South Korean memory leaders, which means any advancement from the Chinese firm could add more competition to the market leaders.

“Investors are jittery and looking for excuses to take profit on AI-related stocks that have outperformed this year, especially memory stocks,” said UBP’s senior equity advisor Vey-Sern Ling.

“In reality, while the Chinese memory makers can potentially become a threat to global demand-supply balance over time, in the short run they continue to face technology hurdles, especially for more advanced memory like HBM,” Ling told CNBC via email.

CXMT shares closed 2.8% lower in Shanghai.

There’s a popular expression on Wall Street: KISS, which stands for, Keep It Simple, Stupid. Amid a torrent of complicated cross currents, it might present the best approach to trading this week’s news.

More catalysts mean more potential for big moves, and if options are cheap they may present the better way to make a directional bet. At the moment, SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) call options look like a better way to be long in this market.

Here’s why:

Let’s start with Treasuries. The 30-year rate is at the highest level in 20 years. This was enough for Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to try to manipulate the long end of the curve with the “Treasury twist,” buying back longer maturity debt financed with shorter-term debt. That worked for about a day. The 10-year (the rate he looks at most) dipped to roughly 4.64%, then climbed right back, finishing the week at 4.73%. This is the highest of the post-GFC era. Rising discount rates are not just a headache for government finances; they’re a headwind for every long-duration asset. Of course, that cuts both ways. I believe more concrete yield curve manipulation could occur via the Federal Reserve if 10-year yields approach 6%, but others seemingly believe rates won’t get that high. Look at the holders of IEF, for example, the 7-10 year Treasury ETF. Fisher Investments owns nearly 161 million shares, about $15 billion worth. If you share the view that it’s a good idea to own a little duration in your fixed income allocation you may also believe the S&P highs will be reached between now and year-end.

Another potential catalyst?

Nvidia reports Wednesday. It is very hard for this market to do well if Nvidia’s results disappoint; the index’s performance has been carried by AI infrastructure spending, and Nvidia is both its biggest beneficiary, its bellwether, and the largest single constituent. A modest guidance stumble would ripple through semis, hyperscalers, power, and everything else the trade touches, but even if it didn’t, the stock moves markets by itself. Over the past four quarterly earnings releases Nvidia has fallen an average of ~6%, based on its current weight in the S&P and the Nasdaq that translates to a down move of nearly .5% in those two indices. However, after a year’s worth of ho-hum post-earnings price action, this could be the one that reignites the fire. Nvidia is trading at a well below market multiple.

Now we’re also continuing to contend with trade/tariff policy. Talks with Canada have broken down again, with Mark Carney deciding retaliation is set for September 8. According to an article published by Bloomberg, the PM “see[s] little chance of resuming talks with President Trump before the midterm elections.” While we keep falling into traps of our own making, and of course, if Carney is presented with a deal he doesn’t like, the looming midterms provide an obvious pressure point. It’s worth noting that President Trump has also clotheslined shorts based on trade and tariffs. A…

Nine thousand people working long hours, six days a week, to meet a deadline for full production of memory chips by the first quarter of 2027. The workers know they can each make $200,000, maybe more. They seem united in their mission; no Potemkin village going up in Boise, Idaho. Just two state-of-the-art fabs for the number three producer of dynamic random access memory (DRAM), Micron . All for one reason: Demand for DRAM is so strong that this proud American company — which stuck with memory-chip manufacturing even as peers, including Intel, closed U.S. factories — needs to get more chips into data centers as quickly as possible. Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron’s CEO since 2017, does not want his company to be the bottleneck in the great AI build-out in the U.S. and around the world. He cares passionately about how well Micron is doing, how many thousands of patents this innovative company amasses, and how specialized and powerful his semiconductors are, especially high-bandwidth devices. Mehrotra hears the argument from influential voices, including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, that the balance of power in the data center buildout is shifting toward DRAM makers. Maybe he reads the postings. But one look at the commitment you see in Boise, the kind of job you might think could only be done by China’s fabled Eighth Route Army, tells you he doesn’t want that kind of chokehold power. Sanjay, as everyone knows him, would rather have it stem from better, more powerful chips and the proprietary intellectual property they contain. He wants to take share from Samsung and the all-powerful SK Hynix, rather than wield the de facto power that comes from being a bottleneck. He wants to beat the Koreans, not hold Musk or any other hungry data center or neo-hyperscaler CEO hostage to tight memory supply. He believes Micron can do that even as its rivals make their chips in the obviously lower-cost geographies. Sure, the U.S. is a higher-cost producer. But Mehrotra says technology can make up the difference. Two massive fabs are taking shape in Boise, and their importance can’t be overstated. On top of that, Micron is building two fabs in Clay, New York, near Syracuse, this time hiring both union and non-union employees, as in Boise. They could be tougher. Will the unions allow employees who want to work six days a week to do so? Will it matter that it’s a CHIPS and Science Act project? How does that cut? Micron’s putting up $100 billion here. Will the $6 billion that the government is putting up matter in this ten-year project? Mehrotra is hopeful. No matter what, I saw a true marvel when I visited Boise last week. There was a spirit at our luncheon that I have not seen in any of our site visits. They get the high stakes. I think they will deliver. Their cause seemed so meaningful to so many that I felt like a mental Lilliputian when I asked when he would start buying back stock in companies like Sandisk , Western Digital , and Seagate . Technically, he…

Rising bond yields and oil prices put stocks under pressure this week, while another bout of volatility in the AI trade tested investors’ conviction in the market’s biggest growth theme. The S & P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite snapped their three-week winning streaks, down roughly 1.43% and 2.05%, respectively. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.85%. Much of the pressure came from the bond market, where long-term yields surged to levels not seen in nearly two decades as tensions with Iran pushed oil prices higher and revived concerns about persistent inflation. The Treasury Department stepped in Wednesday morning with an unusual announcement, saying it would more than double the size of its buybacks of longer-dated government debt. Yields initially fell and stocks rallied on the disclosure, which Jim characterized as an effort to preserve the stock market rally . But the relief proved short-lived, with yields climbing again Thursday and Friday as higher oil prices kept inflation worries alive. The AI trade also had a rocky week, and a series of headlines on political backlash to data centers may have played a role. That includes Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s executive order on Tuesday, which imposes tough standards on any developments in his state. On Friday, Jim questioned whether these restrictions on data center development would materially slow the buildout, or amount mostly to election-year rhetoric. The uncertainty hit infrastructure names particularly hard, with GE Vernova and Eaton down 10% and 7.2%, respectively, for the week. We used the weakness to buy more GE Vernova on Tuesday , though shares continued to drift lower from there. Here’s a closer look at what drove the market this week. Broadcom competition and a new name we’re looking at Broadcom shares fell 4% Wednesday after its chief rival, Marvell Technology , announced an expansive partnership with Alphabet’s Google, its flagship custom-chip customer. Broadcom has long co-designed Google’s tensor processing unit (TPU). Now, Marvell has a deal to supply a variety of technology tied to Google’s TPU ecosystem. The deal validated concerns that Google will increasingly diversify its suppliers. We would have preferred Broadcom to win the business, but we’re not abandoning the stock. It does, however, reinforce why Jim ranked Nvidia , Intel , and Micron ahead of Broadcom among our chip holdings at last week’s Monthly Meeting. Broadcom was in the news again Friday, with Bloomberg reporting the company is in talks to raise more than $60 billion in debt for an AI financing deal . The arrangement would involve the creation of a special-purpose vehicle that uses the borrowed money to buy Broadcom chips, which are then leased out to a tenant, such as Anthropic, according to Bloomberg. The increased reliance on debt financing to fund the AI buildout warrants scrutiny, but the enormous sum also speaks to the level of demand for AI infrastructure. Broadcom shares…

Hedge funds struggled to a historic extent as AI momentum unwound in July, according to Goldman Sachs.

“Our Hedge Fund VIP list of the most popular long positions suffered its worst 1-month underperformance vs. the S&P 500 in more than 20 years of history, and July marked one of the sharpest hedge fund de-grossing episodes of the past decade,” Goldman strategists led by Ben Snider said. “Funds trimmed positions in a number of AI stocks, including many semiconductors and most of the mega-caps,” it added.

Hedge funds have begun to diversify from artificial intelligence, even after they entered last quarter “all in on AI” with portfolio turnover at the highest since 2021, according to Goldman Sachs.

“Hedge fund performance, leverage, and the most popular long positions have swung sharply with the AI trade during the last few months,” Goldman said.

Hedge funds delivered strong gains in the second quarter as the market was being fueled by popular AI stocks, which helped hedge fund crowding climbed to a record, Goldman said. Last quarter, tech accounted for 14 of the 20 so-called Rising Stars with the largest increases in hedge fund popularity, it noted.

That said, while hedge fund gross leverage, net leverage, and AI exposure have each declined from their Q2 highs, they still rank above longer-term averages, according to Goldman.

“Despite the volatility, US equity long/short hedge funds have returned 10% through mid-August.”

Asian technology stocks extended their sell-off on Wednesday, with semiconductor names leading declines after another weak session in the U.S.

In South Korea, SK Hynix slid more than 15% after the chip giant missed analysts’ estimates despite posting record quarterly profit and revenue. Samsung Electronics lost over 8%, while LG Innotek fell 15% and Seoul Semiconductor dropped 10%.

The latest weakness in Asian chip stocks reflects “the ongoing deleveraging process in Korea and softer sentiment towards global technology stocks,” said Kieron Poon, investment director of Asian equities at Aberdeen Investments, in a Tuesday note. However, he added that the recent volatility “has not changed our long-term positive view.”

Japanese chip names also declined. Japan’s computer memory manufacturer Kioxia was down 14%. Tokyo Electron fell 12.6%, while SoftBank Group, a major AI investment proxy through its stake in Arm, lost nearly 10%.

Taiwan’s TSMC, the world’s largest contract chip manufacturer, was 3.9% lower.

Mainland China’s tech-heavy ChiNext 300 index lost 0.63%, while the Hang Seng China Semiconductor Chips Index fell more than 6%.

The declines in Asia came on the heels of another weak session for U.S. semiconductor stocks overnight.

Nvidia sank at the open but closed the session flat. Intel dropped nearly 6% and AMD lost 8%. Memory space names Micron and Seagate lost more than 8%, Western Digital sank nearly 7% and Sandisk shed 14%. SK Hynix U.S. shares dropped 9%.

Despite the sharp pullback, Aberdeen sees the sell-off as an opportunity rather than a deterioration in fundamentals. “The recent market pullback has brought valuations to more attractive levels, creating opportunities for us to add exposure to high quality businesses at more reasonable prices,” Poon said.

The recent pullback in AI-related chip stocks reflects investors “giving back a little bit of the froth that was in the AI market,” David Riedel, founder and president of Riedel Research Group, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Wednesday.

While concerns over AI financing and rising Chinese competition have weighed on sentiment, “the market is healthy,” he said, adding that memory chipmakers “will be fine” but “just have to give back some of those sudden gains.”

Chinese internet stocks listed in Hong Kong bucked the broader regional weakness with Tencent and Meituan up 4% and 2.49%, respectively. Alibaba, Baidu and Kuaishou all traded higher.

The bears may be ready for bed, but the AI party doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon, as evidenced by Micron’s quarterly earnings on Wednesday. But which stocks stand to gain the most depends on where they sit in the data center supply chain. Micron delivered a blowout quarter , with sales more than quadrupling to $41.46 billion from $9.3 billion a year ago, and beating analyst estimates of $36 billion. Adjusted earnings of $25.11 per share topped the $20.78 expected from analysts polled by LSEG. And the good times are still rolling. The maker of memory and storage chips is now guiding revenue for the current quarter of about $50 billion, up from just $11.3 billion a year ago, and well ahead of the roughly $43 billion expected by the Street. Positive indicators But it was the earnings conference call that really got investors going. Management got right to the point: supply of memory and flash storage won’t catch up with demand for a long while. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said demand for DRAM and NAND “significantly” exceeds supply and will “beyond calendar 2027 as a result of AI-driven demand across all segments, coupled with structural supply constraints.” “Even as we expect industry supply to improve gradually in 2028, we currently do not have a line of sight as to when memory supply will be able to catch up with increasing demand,” Mehrotra said, noting that growth in the memory supply is dependent on “greenfield” expansions, or projects that start from scratch, rather than brownfield fabs, which entail modifying or upgrading existing infrastructure. Contributing to Micron’s inability to ramp supply to levels that meet demand are long lead times for fab construction, skilled worker shortages, complex regulatory dynamics, and the need for “enhanced energy infrastructure,” Mehrotra said. A skilled worker shortage is not an easy bottleneck to address. Management further laid out how the company is shifting from a cyclical commodity business to a contract-driven supplier to the AI boom. Micron has signed 16 long-term agreements with several customers, including hyperscalers, automakers, and AI infrastructure companies, and is locking in sales for three to five years. This transformation is great for Micron shareholders, as it will provide smoother, more predictable sales and earnings, reducing Micron’s risk of overinvestment. But it also signals to investors more broadly that Micron’s customers agree with the dynamics at play and are willing to sign legally binding multi-year contracts as a result, a signal that should increase confidence in the near- to medium-term sustainability of the AI investment cycle currently driving so much of the market. The report and call propelled Micron shares up 16% on Thursday. But the positive vibes aren’t extending to all companies tied to the AI buildout. Not all AI stocks ride along So what does all this mean for investors? It depends largely on where your investments are in the AI infrastructure supply chain….

Ahead of Thursday’s milestone, the CEO of Roundhill Investments told CNBC’s “ETF Edge” the rapid growth is tied to the limited number of companies involved in producing high-bandwidth memory or DRAM chips. They’re considered integral to the artificial intelligence revolution.

“Investors are waking up to the fact that the biggest bottleneck in the AI build-out is actually memory chips,” Dave Mazza said Monday. “There’s an incredible amount of supply and demand imbalance with memory which is one of the reasons why the stocks have been performing so well.”

Mazza notes just a small number of companies are involved in making high-bandwidth memory chips.

“This is an area where memory has historically been incredibly cyclical. We’ve seen boom-and-bust cycles. And, one of the reasons why it was so cyclical is memory is actually found everywhere — in your smart TV to your phone in your car,” he said. “What’s changed is actually data centers and the growth and build-out of AI.”
