Amazon on Thursday evening delivered a rare double miss. Shares of the e-commerce and cloud giant sank in after-hours trading as quarterly revenue and earnings fell short of estimates. Weaker-than-expected retail sales and advertising revenue offset strong Amazon Web Services numbers. Current quarter guidance also missed, though management was probably being conservative there. Revenue increased 12% year over year to $201.9 billion, missing the consensus analyst estimate of $202.3 billion, according to LSEG data. Earnings per share based on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) fell 3% year over year to $1.89, missing the consensus estimate of $1.96, according to LSEG. Operating Income of $28 billion beat analyst forecasts by about $1.8 billion, according to FactSet. AMZN YTD mountain Amazon YTD Amazon’s roughly 6.5% post-earnings slide followed up a 4% decline during the regular session. Bottom line At around $228 per share, the Club stock has given back the entire 15% pop it got last quarter , when CEO Andy Jassy explained the line of sight he has on achieving attractive returns on the company’s data center investments. While Jassy’s vision remains clear, the market has become much more skeptical about the returns on each dollar invested in AI infrastructure and how companies will fund these massive spending programs, especially as free cash flow turned negative, as it has for Amazon. Add in the slowdown in Amazon’s core retail businesses — online stores and advertising — and it was a recipe for a disappointing quarter. Still, we see plenty to like about Amazon, including its multiyear AWS growth outlook that could move forward estimates higher, improving margins that allow management to keep reinvesting in the business and make its products and services strong, and likely conservative guidance that will be beat. But a miss is a miss. The long-term drivers keep us positive on the stock as we’re reiterating our buy-equivalent 1 rating. We are, however, trimming our price target to $280 from $300 in recognition of the shifting investor expectations and the stock’s drop from its record closing high of $284 back on Aug. 3. Commentary Revenue growth at cloud unit Amazon Web Services (AWS) accelerated for the sixth straight quarter. At 39.3% year over year, AWS recorded its fastest growth rate in nearly five years. This result was better than what analysts forecasted, but investor expectations may have been for a bigger quarter-over-quarter increase, especially after the strong cloud results from Microsoft and Alphabet on Wednesday night. AWS revenue was $45.98 billion, up from $42.23 billion in the second quarter. One important driver of AWS’ growth was Bedrock, which the company said has become the fastest-growing multibillion-dollar service in the cloud unit’s history. Amazon Bedrock is an AWS service that allows businesses to build and deploy generative AI applications using foundation models from leading AI companies without…

Size is a relative matter. The standard Manhattan apartment would seem almost claustrophobic compared to the vast expanses offered by suburban living. A similar dynamic is playing out in the market.

Mega-cap companies are generally defined as those with market capitalizations exceeding $200 billion. Of course, the largest companies are another order of magnitude larger than that. For example, Meta, which reported stellar earnings this week, has a current market capitalization of $1.65 trillion.

But concerns about its AI buildout expenses wiped $135 billion from its market cap in just four sessions, or put another way, roughly the value on and entire Uber. Market cap is one way to understand how big these companies are, but another is by examining the size of their operations, and their opportunities.

Consider Muse.

Meta’s personal AI agent is designed to be more of an active digital assistant than a conventional conversational chatbot. Muse can open browsers, fill out forms, send emails, schedule appointments, book travel, and (potentially) even make purchases.

To understand how large an economic opportunity this represents for the company, consider what something like that might be worth. $5 per month per user? (Not in subscription fees necessarily, mind you, just monetizable economic value). That seems a bit low for something so powerful. $10/month? Quite realistically. Then consider the size of Meta’s ecosystem’s daily active user base across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. That number is truly “mega”: 3.6 billion, supposedly counting each person only once. If we assume that each of those individuals has and uses a global phone – 5.86 billion unique people on the planet do – that means Meta interacts at least once with 61.4% of them each day.

If Muse is worth $120/year and reaches just 1% of Meta’s Daily Active People, that’s $4.3 billion/year. If it’s worth half that amount, but reaches 20% of their daily actives, that’s $43.2 billion/year. The first number seems absurdly low as a back-of-the-napkin figure, but the $135 billion valuation loss in less than a week is offset by $20 billion in revenue (the company trades at just under 7x revenue). If Muse can generate $30 billion in revenues, it is a megacap company in its own right!

So why has the company sold off if everything is so rosy? A massive $25 billion lawsuit in New Mexico, a potential PR headache related to a deal struck between the company and its founder to resolve potential tax liabilities associated with a possible billionaire’s tax in California that preserves his voting rights, and, of course, concerns about debt, on the balance sheet and off, to finance the enormous investment that the company is making (and expanding) in AI, and AI jitters generally. But at 20x FY earnings, and less than 17x FY2027 estimated earnings, the company is now pricing a lot of that in. Those headaches create headwinds, but the underlying story provides support.

Wall Street is banking heavily on exchange-traded funds that give investors artificial intelligence exposure, according to J.P. Morgan Asset Management.

The firm’s “Guide to ETFs,” which came out this month, finds it’s a top five theme by assets under management — even as volatility hit the group in the second quarter.

“Many [themes] are morphing towards AI and the ecosystem surrounding AI,” Jon Maier, the firm’s chief ETF strategist, told CNBC’s “ETF Edge” this week.

Maier, who led the insights team that published the report, also highlighted an overlapping relationship between AI-themed ETFs and infrastructure.

“It’s all kind of feeding into the AI story … the applications, the energy [and] the AI models,” he said.

Go with the flow? ETFs vs. mutual funds

JPMorgan’s Guide to ETFs also found that mutual fund overall inflows are meaningfully tapering off while more money is flowing into ETFs.

“That’s only going to continue,” said Maier, who added the report’s data showed negative inflows into mutual funds overall during the past several years.

He also suggests that ETFs have become more attractive to retail investors because of the tax benefits.

“They typically don’t pay a capital gain [tax],” he said.

Maier contends mutual funds are a different story.

“Imagine if you bought a mutual fund in 2022 and you’re down 20%, 30%, 40%, depending on what part of the market you bought, and you still got a capital gain of 6%. You’re not happy,” he said.

The harsh winter storm that recently hit much of the country took its toll on the mortgage market in the week that followed. Potential buyers stayed home, and mortgage rates didn’t move enough to spark refinance demand.

Total mortgage application volume dropped 8.9% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index. Last week’s results included an adjustment for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances, $832,750 or less, decreased to 6.21% from 6.24%, with points increasing to 0.56 from 0.55, including the origination fee, for loans with a 20% down payment.

Despite the drop, applications to refinance a home loan fell 5% for the week but were still 117% higher than the same week one year ago, when rates were over 7%. The refinance share of mortgage activity increased to 57.1% of total applications from 56.2% the previous week.

Applications for a mortgage to purchase a home fell 14% for the week and were just 4% higher year over year.

“Winter Storm Fern likely had an impact as much of the country was snowed in, hampering homebuying activity,” said Joel Kan, vice president and deputy chief economist at the MBA. “The annual increase in purchase applications was the weakest since April 2025.”

Mortgage rates moved higher to start this week, on a separate index from Mortgage News Daily. They are now at the highest level in two weeks, but that’s not saying much, as the range is tiny. Rates rose as the result of a stronger-than-expected report on the manufacturing sector.

Correction: This story has been updated to correct the time reference for the recent winter storm.

As of Wednesday’s close, the S&P 500 was down 0.4% month to date, the Dow Jones Industrial Average 0.29% lower during the same period and the Nasdaq Composite retreating 2.15%, vastly underperforming its siblings as technology stocks stumbled in November.

Unless there’s a huge jump in stocks during the shortened trading session on Friday stateside — which might not be an unequivocally positive move since it would raise more questions about the market’s sustainability — that means the indexes are on track to snap their winning streaks. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average have risen in the past six months, and the Nasdaq Composite seven.

It will also mark a divergence from the historical norm. The S&P 500 has advanced an average of 1.8% in November since 1950, according to the Stock Trader’s Almanac. And in the year following a U.S. presidential election, it typically rises 1.6%.

But it’s not been a typical post-presidential election year. It’s hard to see the market, in the coming months, or even years, moving according to any historical trajectory.
