When Sam Joseph Karam received an email from online retailer Etsy saying 11 of his T-shirt designs bearing the slang term “bruh” had been taken down for a trademark violation, he was immediately suspicious.

“It’s usually one or two listings. It’s not 11 in a row. So that obviously caught our attention pretty quickly,” Karam said.

Karam, who owns the U.S.-based apparel company Customized Designs and sells clothing on sites like Etsy, says the platform also revoked his Star Seller badge — a mark given by the platform that means the seller provides top-tier customer service. Following that, he says he noticed an immediate drop in sales.

In the email, Etsy told Karam the shirt had been reported by someone named Malik Yawar Abbas, who holds a Canadian trademark for the term “bruh.”

Karam is one of multiple Etsy sellers who told CBC News they’ve had items taken down from the platform after their use of the word was reported by the trademark holder. CBC News reviewed multiple emails Etsy sent to Karam and two other sellers that showed the takedowns came in response to complaints by Abbas.

Karam says Abbas, the trademark holder, is “squatting” on the trademark, aiming to make money by licensing the use of the word to others rather than by making a product of his own. Some legal experts say it’s up to platforms and the legal system to better prevent trademarks from being used in this way.

No clothes for sale, request for payment

A trademark for the word “bruh” was issued by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) in July 2025 in connection with selling many kinds of clothing, according to the government’s trademarks database. Another trademark for the same word was recently granted to Abbas for use in advertising restaurant services.

In an email to CBC News, CIPO did not answer questions about the “bruh” trademark, but said each trademark application the office receives is “examined on a case-by-case basis.”

After the listings were removed, Karam found the trademark holder’s website and was surprised to find a section detailing how he protects the “bruh” trademark and directing others to license with him in order to get permission to use it.

“We didn’t invent the word. the streets did. the internet did. but we realized its power,” the site reads.

The site doesn’t offer clothes for sale — just mock-ups of clothing and items like energy drinks using the word “bruh.”

In an email to CBC News, trademark holder Abbas said those images are there to show “potential commercial applications” of the brand.

The Pentagon lowered its official death toll for the Iran war to 14 from 18 in the space of a day, after the Trump administration removed four service members killed this month from the count, according to the defense casualty analysis system.

The Pentagon’s casualty database showed seven of the 14 total deaths were classified as “hostile.” The New York Times reported the change in count earlier.

Three military officials told the Times that the four service members killed this past weekend — three in Jordan and one in northern Iraq — were struck from the list because their deaths came after President Donald Trump declared a ceasefire in April. All of the deaths listed on Thursday U.S. time on the website, which said it was updated as of Wednesday, occurred in March.

The Pentagon and the State Department did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.

The acting press secretary for the Pentagon, Joel Valdez, attributed the change to “temporary data disruptions” on the department’s casualty website that he said would be fixed quickly, according to the Times.

The revision came amid scrutiny of the administration’s handling of casualty data as the Middle East conflict drags on.

Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) said on Monday that Trump has not shared Iran war casualty statistics with Congress and that “there has been no transparency from the President or the Pentagon about the full extent of equipment losses and casualty statistics.”

The Pentagon has released little on U.S. military strategy since the ceasefire collapsed and hasn’t held a major briefing on the war since early May.

Trump himself has used the higher figure for the death toll. At an event on Thursday, he said, “I had a very sad day yesterday. I went to Dover, four great American patriots killed. That’s 18 … and one is too many, but it’s 18.”

The photo, released on Friday along with a slew of other files, shows a desk displaying a large assortment of framed and unframed photographs and other items. Among those photographs are at least two that clearly show Trump’s face.

Lawmakers on Saturday were quick to note that the image was missing from the DOJ website.

“This photo, file 468, from the Epstein files that includes Donald Trump has apparently now been removed from the DOJ release,” Democrats on the House Oversight Committee said in a post on X. “@AGPamBondi is this true? What else is being covered up? We need transparency for the American public.”

The photo featuring Trump was among the at least 16 files that disappeared from the site, the Associated Press reported Saturday.

Friday’s release included only some of the vast number of documents required to be disclosed under a deadline set by the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which mandated that the DOJ divulge all the files. The DOJ continued its partial release with more files tied to the investigation early Saturday.

Congress is considering holding impeachment hearings about Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche if the documents that were released don’t comply with the law, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said Friday.

“What we need is a clear timeline of when the rest of the documents will be released and an explanation for why they did not release all of them today,” Khanna said during a press conference following the files’ release.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who co-sponsored the House bill with Khanna that ordered the Justice Department to release the files, on Saturday, accused the DOJ of openly disregarding the law.

“Compare Language of Epstein Files Transparency Act directing DOJ to provide internal communications regarding their decisions Versus DOJ letter to Congress asserting privilege to omit materials related to decisions, because they weren’t specified by law,” Massie wrote in a post on X.

The megabill will now go to the House of Representatives, where lawmakers will consider the Senate’s changes.

The clean energy industry was surprised and outraged to find over the weekend that a tax on wind and solar projects had been inserted into a version of the Senate legislation. The tax applied to projects that use components from foreign entities of concern above a certain threshold. Foreign entities of concern is widely understood to basically refer to China.

The tax was ultimately struck from the Senate legislation, the American Clean Power Association (ACP) and Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) told CNBC. The measure was punitive and would have added up to $7 billion to the solar and wind industry’s tax burden, said John Hensley, ACP’s senior vice president for market analysis.

The Senate bill still phases out the clean electricity investment and production tax credits for wind and solar, though the timeline isn’t quite as strict as previous versions of the legislation. These credits have played a crucial role in the expansion of renewable energy in the U.S.

Projects that start construction within 12 months of the bill becoming law can still qualify for full tax credits, according to ACP. Projects that start construction after 12 months have to enter service by the end of 2027 to qualify for the credits, according to ACP.

After several years of deep distress, the beleaguered U.S. office market has reached an inflection point. This year, office conversions and demolitions will exceed new construction for the first time in at least 25 years.

Simply put, more office space is being removed than added, shrinking the overall office footprint, according to exclusive new data from CBRE Group. The commercial real estate services firm has been tracking this since 2018, but estimates it may be the first time such a dynamic has played out this century, and likely longer.

CBRE found that across the largest 58 U.S. markets, 23.3 million square feet of space is slated for demolition or conversion to other uses by the end of this year. In comparison, developers are projected to complete construction of 12.7 million square feet of office space in those same markets.

“This net reduction – albeit slight – of office space across major markets likely will contribute to lowering the vacancy rate in the quarters ahead, which would benefit building owners,” said Mike Watts, CBRE Americas president of investor leasing.

All of this is being driven by the fundamental shift in office attendance, resulting from the growing remote-work culture since the start of the pandemic. Office vacancies soared to a record high and still hover right around there at 19%.

But the market is starting to recover. More employers are ordering staff back to the office full-time, and, as the job market tightens, more employees are willing to take what they can get, even if it means more in-person attendance.

Net absorption, which is the amount of space newly occupied in a quarter versus the amount vacated, has been positive for the past four quarters after six straight quarters of being negative. Office-leasing activity increased 18% in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same time frame the year before.

With less supply and steadily increasing demand, office rents should stabilize. For prime office locations and new, so-called Class A space, rent has recovered. Beneficiaries in that space are some of the major office REITs, like Vornado, BXP, Alexandria Real Estate Equities and SL Green.

“The office market will benefit as obsolete space is removed from the market in favor of the highest and best use. Additionally, conversions will boost the vibrancy of neighborhoods within various markets,” said Jessica Morin, CBRE Americas head of office research.

Developers also have another 85 million square feet of office space being readied for conversion in the next few years. Since 2016, office conversions to multifamily residences have generated roughly 33,000 apartments and condominiums, according to CBRE, given that each conversion, on average historically, yields about 170 units. There are about 43,500 units in the pipeline from conversions already underway.

The reduction in office space overall is a positive for commercial real estate, but it will be slow going.

“The conversion trend faces a few headwinds….
