Bitcoin surged this week on positive regulatory news coming out of the U.S. and news that the Treasury Department would at least double the size of its long-dated bond buybacks.

“From everything we see, positioning is starting to reverse,” Jiang said.

“People are going from very much on the sidelines and even net short positioning to now realizing they want to be long, for what could be a very big technology.”

Bitcoin was recently priced at $77,412 after surging more than 23% over the past week. The biggest cryptocurrency touched as high as $79,319 earlier on Friday.

While spending most of June and July below $65,000, bitcoin has benefited from news that came out of the White House this week.

President Donald Trump held a meeting with crypto executives earlier in the week, and urged lawmakers to get the long-awaited Clarity Act over the line.

The crypto legislation, which aims to make it clear which digital assets the SEC and CFTC will watchdog, has been called for by industry bigwigs for years. A vote will now go ahead on the proposed law in September.

Bitcoin surged on Trump’s comments. On the same day, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department would at least double the size of its long-dated bond buybacks.

Non-yielding assets including bitcoin and gold jumped on the news.

Jiang added that a slew of positive fundamentals in the crypto space — including stablecoin adoption, prediction markets, perpetual futures, and “the crossover of AI” — would help push bitcoin’s price higher.

“It’s really hard not to be bullish,” he said.

Yields on 10-year U.S. Treasurys — the main benchmark for mortgages, auto loans and credit card debt — moved more than 4 basis points higher to 4.696%.

The 10- and 30-year yield levels were right around the level they held before the 8:30 a.m. announcement Wednesday that Treasury would be stepping up its bond buyback program.

The yield on the 2-year Treasury note, which more closely follows short-term Federal Reserve rate decisions, was last seen up more than 2 basis points at 4.20%.

One basis point equals 0.01%, or 1/100th of 1%, and yields and prices move inversely to one another.

The moves underscored the difficulty of market interventions, particularly at a time when U.S. debt faces a slew of factors that have been pressuring yields higher.

In a move announced Wednesday morning, the Treasury Department, led by Secretary Scott Bessent, announced it would at least double the size of its government debt buybacks, starting Sept. 9 and running through Nov. 4.

Yields tumbled following the announcement, with the 30-year down about 10 basis points after previously hitting its highest in about 19 years, predating the global financial crisis in 2008.

However, the trade quickly unwound, with yields higher Thursday as the market digested the move, as well as the longer-term structural problems facing the fixed income market.

The interventions “belie the underlying structural challenges and do nothing to address them,” Maia Crook, senior research analyst at JPMorgan Chase, said in a client note. “While [Wednesday’s] action forced some decline in longer-dated yields, the more lasting impact is the potential for higher risk premia reflecting a Treasury Department that is intervening in the market and moving away from its ‘regular and predictable’ tenet.”

The announcement came the same day that Treasury updated the national debt total, which pushed past the $40 trillion mark. At the same time, the market has faced stiff competition from record corporate debt issuance tied to the artificial intelligence buildout, all of which has contributed to rising term premiums, or the extra yield investors demand to hold U.S. government paper.

Traders were also digesting the latest Federal Open Market Committee minutes from July, released Wednesday. Officials at the meeting indicated that higher interest rates likely would be needed if there isn’t more progress on inflation. Economic data released since the meeting have shown modest monthly price increases, though inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target.

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Fed’s manufacturing index…

AI stocks came roaring back this week as investors worked through another wave of corporate earnings and a surprisingly weak July jobs report . The major averages notched a second straight week of gains, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S & P 500 both touching record highs. The blue-chip index closed at a record Wednesday and finished the week up 3%, while the S & P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 3.6% and 5.2%, respectively. The S & P closed at a record Friday. The Nasdaq is 1.5% below its June 2 all-time closing high. Friday’s weaker-than-expected jobs report helped fuel the week’s gains by easing concerns that the Federal Reserve will need to raise interest rates at its September meeting. Nonfarm payrolls unexpectedly fell by 23,000 in July, prompting investors to dial back expectations for another rate hike and sending Treasury yields lower. Now, traders are pricing in a 55% probability that the Fed holds rates unchanged at its September meeting, up from 45% on Thursday, according to the CME FedWatch tool . Here’s a closer look at what drove the market this week. The AI trade finds its footing After spending much of July under heavy pressure, semiconductor and data center stocks staged an impressive rebound this week. The recovery gained momentum after last week’s collapse of Situational Awareness, the highly leveraged hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. As we discussed throughout last week, the fund’s forced unwinding triggered indiscriminate selling across AI infrastructure names, pushing many fundamentally strong companies well below where they should have been trading. Jim called the liquidation a ” clearing event ” for the AI trade because it removed one of the market’s biggest overhangs . With much of that forced selling now behind us, earnings and business fundamentals have once again become the primary drivers of stock performance. The rebound was evident across our portfolio, with Corning finishing as our best-performing stock of the week. The strength extended across the chip sector, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) jumping 7.6% for the week, more than double the 30-stock Dow’s 3% gain. The group gave back some gains on Thursday after Sandisk and Western Digital delivered guidance that failed to excite investors despite otherwise solid quarterly results. We view those reactions as company-specific rather than a sign that demand across the AI infrastructure buildout is weakening. That conviction is why we added Micron to the Bullpen. Memory-chip maker Micron has already bounced sharply from its July 30 lows, but remains roughly 28% below its June 25 record close of $1,213.56. SpaceX bets big on Nvidia Shares of SpaceX fell 13% Wednesday after the company reported better-than-expected revenue and earnings, but announced second-quarter capital expenditures of $18.4 billion, well above expectations. The stock recovered later in the week, finishing up 23%, after…

Canada’s economy grew by 0.3 per cent in May, continuing the country’s growth for a second straight month and putting the economy on track for a solid second quarter, according to Statistics Canada.

The increase topped Statistics Canada’s own initial estimate for 0.1 per cent growth in the month.

The agency says 13 of 20 industrial sectors — including construction, manufacturing, finance and insurance and the public sector — contributed to the month’s gains.

The mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction sector rose one per cent in May, leading growth for a second straight month. Some maintenance work that usually happens in the month was completed early or deferred, which paved the way for more extraction.

Transportation and warehousing also increased, as pipelines pushed more natural gas out of the country and onto the market.

Offices of real estate agents were also especially busy due to a rise in home-selling activity, boosting the real estate and rental and leasing sector.

An early estimate for June also shows the economy on track to expand by 0.2 per cent in that month. With Statistics Canada also revising April’s GDP growth up slightly to 0.6 per cent, that puts the Canadian economy on track for a solid second quarter of growth.

Canada’s economy contracted for a second consecutive quarter, which some would call a technical recession. But what is really holding back the Canadian economy? Power & Politics hears from Marc Desormeaux, an economist and the vice-president of policy with the Business Council of Canada, about why this isn’t a ‘true’ recession and how the country’s bottom line is being impacted by the U.S. trade tensions.

The data agency’s advance estimate has real GDP rising 3.4 per cent on an annualized basis in the second quarter, marking a sharp rebound from a mild contraction in the first three months of the year.

The decline in the first quarter of 2026 made for the second straight quarter of GDP contraction on an annualized basis, which led to fears of a technical recession.

But BMO chief economist Doug Porter said these new numbers show that the weakness earlier this year was overstated.

“After all the collective angst about a possible technical recession just a few months ago, it’s now clear that the underlying economy is still grinding ahead,” Porter wrote in a note to investors.

Policymakers likely won’t read too much into these quarterly numbers yet, though, according to CIBC economist Andrew Grantham, since the numbers are often revised.

Plus, he says some one-off factors — like oil maintenance being pushed, and positive impacts from the FIFA World Cup — likely helped boost GDP in the second quarter, so…

South Korea’s stock market staged its sharpest reversal on record on Friday, capping a month of wild swings that underscored how tightly the country’s equity market has become tied to the global artificial intelligence trade.

The benchmark Kospi surged 14%, on track for its largest one-day jump, data from LSEG showed. SK Hynix similarly saw a record rebound, while Samsung Electronics soared.

“The Korean stock market has been trading as if it has bipolar disorder, swinging from panic to euphoria almost overnight,” said Jung In Yun of Fibonacci Asset Management. “Today’s move looks like a violent reversal of an extremely crowded selloff.”

The rebound followed a powerful overnight rally in U.S. technology stocks after upbeat earnings from Microsoft, Amazon and Meta reinforced expectations that spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure remains robust. Additional support also came after SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won disclosed purchases of SK Hynix shares, bolstering confidence in the world’s second-largest memory chipmaker.

Jung said foreign investors appeared to be the main force behind Friday’s rally, while short-covering and mechanical rebalancing by leveraged exchange-traded funds amplified the gains.

New cash-deposit requirements for leveraged ETF investors, which took effect on July 31, may also have contributed to repositioning.

“I would not expect gains of this magnitude to continue,” Jung told CNBC via email. “However, the rebound itself could have further room because positioning had become extremely bearish and SK Hynix’s underlying AI-memory fundamentals remain strong.”

He added, “the real test will be whether foreign buying continues after today’s short-covering fades. If it does, this could develop into a more durable recovery.”

The dramatic rebound comes just days after Korean equities suffered one of their worst selloffs as concerns over stretched AI valuations, rising leverage and signs of forced liquidations rippled through global semiconductor stocks.

Rolf Bulk, semiconductor analyst at Futurum Group, said the latest rally reflects improving confidence that the AI investment cycle remains intact rather than a wholesale shift in fundamentals.

“We’ve seen unprecedented volatility in the Korean stock market over the last month, culminating in this recovery on the final trading day,” Bulk said.

Bulk added that recent forced selling appears to have largely run its…

While investors and businesses spent the early days of April 2025 fretting over the future of global trade and the economy, President Donald Trump was busy buying into the stock market sell-off he created.

Trump made 327 stock purchases on April 8, 2025, according to a CNBC analysis of the president’s annual financial disclosure for 2025 that includes trades, income and liabilities and was released on Tuesday. That made April 8 his 11th busiest day for stock buying last year, more than five times the daily average of roughly 62 for the calendar year, according to the CNBC analysis.

His flurry of buying came on the tail end of a steep four-day spiral that was sparked by the unveiling of his plan for broad and high tariffs. CNBC’s analysis shows Trump’s purchasing focused on the megacap technology stocks that were hard hit after he released the policy on April 2, which he dubbed “liberation day.”

The episode captures a central theme running through Trump’s second term: A president with vast power to move markets is also a president with a vast personal stake in them — with more personal investment at stake than any of his predecessors.

On April 8, the broad S&P 500 index finished that session below the 5,000 mark and within inches of the threshold for a bear market, a term used to describe a 20% drawdown from a recent high. Over the four-day run alone, the closely followed stock market benchmark tumbled more than 12%.

The next morning, minutes after the opening bell on April 9, Trump helped the market abruptly turn around.

Trump posted on Truth Social, the social media platform he owns, that “THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!”. Later that day, Trump announced he was walking back some of the market-roiling tariffs he had announced a week prior.

The S&P 500 climbed around 9.5% in that session, marking one of its best days on record. The benchmark has cumulatively surged around 50% since April 8, 2025.

The White House, when asked to comment on the timing of Trump’s April 8, 2025 trades, spoke more generally about the president’s assets.

“As President Trump said, he has a lot of assets because he was a massively successful businessman prior to becoming President, which was why he was elected to office in the first place,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told CNBC. “All of the President’s assets are in held in fully discretionary accounts managed by independent third-party financial institutions. There are no conflicts of interest.”

Trump on Wednesday told reporters his trades are managed by outside parties.

“I don’t get involved in my personal — we have funds that run my money,” Trump told reporters.

Big tech buying

Trump’s buying spree on April 8 centered on some of the largest public companies in the world.

Asia’s technology stocks rebounded on Wednesday after global equities posted steep losses in the previous session.

South Korea’s semiconductor heavyweights led Wednesday’s bounce during early Asia hours. Shares of Samsung Electronics rose over 9%, while SK Hynix gained more than 4%, recovering part of the more than 12% decline posted by both respectively on Tuesday.

Both chip giants are major constituents of the benchmark Kospi Index, which is up more than 3% after falling 10% in the previous session.

Samsung SDI climbed 2.6%, while Seoul Semiconductor advanced 2.7%.

The rebound extended to Japan’s technology sector, where chip-equipment maker Advantest rose 0.6%, SoftBank Group added 1.5% and laser equipment manufacturer Lasertec gained 0.3%.

Wedbush Securities’ Dan Ives said recent channel checks across Asia and enterprise AI demand trends showed “no cracks in the armor,” arguing that the selloff in South Korean technology stocks was more likely a pause after a near 100% rally in the Kospi this year, rather than a sign of weakening fundamentals.

Oil prices rallied on Wednesday (June 10), erasing the previous session’s losses after US forces struck Iranian military targets and President Donald Trump threatened continued attacks.

Global benchmark Brent crude rose to US$94.32 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate had reached US$91.46 per barrel by midday. The immediate catalyst was a US Central Command operation targeting Iranian air defenses, ground control stations and radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said the strikes were retaliation for the downing of an American Apache helicopter.

While the Trump initially told the Wall Street Journal that the helicopter incident “wasn’t a big deal” because both pilots survived, his posture hardened just hours later.

“They’ve taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price!!!” he posted on Truth Social. According to Fox News, Trump is nearing orders to strike Iranian power plants and bridges.

Tehran warned it will retaliate. Iranian state media claimed the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet base in Bahrain was targeted in a wave of regional explosions, and Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said US strikes will not go unanswered.

Tehran also indicated it will resume hostilities if Israel continues its campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The military exchange undercuts recent optimism about an imminent diplomatic resolution. Just days prior, Trump claimed a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was “two or three days away.”

The escalation also offsets indications that physical oil flows are improving. US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright noted Tuesday (June 9) that shipping traffic through the blockaded strait is “rising very meaningfully.”

Furthermore, JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM) analysts estimate up to 2 million barrels per day are exiting the Persian Gulf covertly on tankers operating without transponders.

Lower Chinese crude imports have also helped keep a ceiling on prices.

Domestically, however, the American Petroleum Institute reported a 9.12 million barrel drop in US crude inventories last week, marking the eighth consecutive weekly decline. Gasoline stocks also fell, pushing traders to debate whether commercial reserves are nearing operational minimums ahead of peak summer demand.

Prices remain up roughly 30 percent since the conflict began on February 28.

The war has triggered the largest oil supply disruption in history as the Strait of Hormuz normally handles one-fifth of the world’s crude and liquefied natural gas.

Asian technology stocks rebounded Tuesday, tracking Wall Street’s gains, as investors returned to artificial intelligence-linked names.

South Korean memory chip giant SK Hynix climbed 6.44%, while Samsung Electronics gained 3.38%. Seoul Semiconductor jumped over 12%.

Japanese semiconductor equipment makers also advanced, with Tokyo Electron rising 5.65%, Advantest adding 1.51%, and Renesas Electronics gaining 2.54%.

However, shares of Japanese tech investment giant SoftBank extended their slide, dropping 2%.

In the U.S., chip stocks powered gains on Monday, helping the S&P 500 gain 0.3%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.86%, clawing back some of last week’s losses amid a broader rout in technology shares.

“The rotation back to domestic defensives we saw yesterday will be short lived for now,” said Andrew Jackson, an equity strategist at ORTUS Advisors.

While it remains unclear whether the recent pullback will be enough to reset valuations, Jackson said markets were likely to remain volatile through the week as investors brace for the pricing of SpaceX’s highly anticipated initial public offering on Thursday and the start of trading on Friday.

Investor attention is also turning to a potential wave of blockbuster AI listings after OpenAI said it had confidentially filed for an initial public offering, following a similar move by Anthropic and coming just days before SpaceX shares are expected to begin trading.

Jackson added that capital could become more constrained after OpenAI’s IPO filing. The artificial intelligence company, which is valued at more than $850 billion, has been gearing up to go public as soon as the fourth quarter of this year.

The PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) suffered its fifth-largest single-day decline in history. When a sector that has effectively anchored the entire macro tech narrative moves with that kind of violence, we shouldn’t treat it as routine noise. To understand the gravity of Friday’s move, you have to look at the other four instances on this infamous leaderboard:

The Tech Wreck (March 2000): The top spot belongs to the opening bell of the dot-com bear market. Within that multi-year unwinding, the SOX suffered two more gut punches of more than 10% on a single day in October 2000 and July 2002.

The Pandemic Plunges (March 2020): The index shed nearly 11% on March 12th and a staggering 16% on March 16th as global liquidity evaporated.

And now, we add last Friday to the list.

The defining characteristic of the current market regime is speed. Whether this history-making drop marks the inception of a structural cyclical correction, as it did in 2000 and in the period that immediately followed, or simply an aggressive liquidity flush, the path forward will not be a straight line down. I distinctly remember late-stage tech bubble volatility going higher even as equity prices hit new highs.

Pullbacks are healthy, but this kind of price action isn’t particularly. The whole saga reminds me of the age old adage: buy protection when you can, not when you need to.

I don’t necessarily advocate dumping stocks, for one thing, that can have meaningfully unpleasant tax implications, but that has to be balanced against the need to preserve against immediate downside. We recommend utilizing liquid index options to establish a definitive risk ceiling without selling stock. Whether it’s a dead-cat bounce or a structural recovery, we’ll still be able to sleep at night.

This specific structure serves two distinct mandates:

It buys immediate insurance against a cascading tech-wide drawdown if the semiconductor weakness spills aggressively into broader large-cap growth.

For those looking to play an oversold bounce, this hedge provides the psychological and financial buffer needed to actively add structural tech equity allocations on deeper pullbacks.

Volatility is a risk, but the right structure can manage it. Secure the downside now, and give your portfolio the flexibility to navigate whatever comes next.
