Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned from the House of Representatives effective immediately on Tuesday, less than an hour before its Ethics Committee was set to discuss what sanctions to impose on the Florida Democrat for violating more than two dozen House rules and ethical standards.

Cherfilus-McCormick, 47, is the third House member to resign since April 13.

On April 13, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and Rep. Tony Gonzalez, a Texas Republican, said they would resign in the face of separate allegations of sexual misconduct.

Cherifilus-McCormick faces a pending criminal case in U.S. District Court in Miami on charges accusing her of stealing $5 million in Covid-19 disaster relief funds allocated to her family’s health-care business, a portion of which was then allegedly contributed to her 2022 congressional campaign.

The Ethics Committee’s own case against her relates to her use of the funds for the campaign. The congresswoman faced the prospect of a vote by the House on whether to expel her after the Ethics Committee issued its sanctions.

Before she resigned, Cherifilus-McCormick had been seeking re-election for a fourth term representing Florida’s 20th congressional district.

In her resignation statement, which was posted on X, Cherfilus-McCormick, who denies any wrongdoing, said the Ethics Committee’s process in dealing with allegations against her was unfair.

“By going forward with this process while a criminal indictment is pending, the Committee prevented me from defending myself,” Cherfilus-McCormick said. “I will not stand by and pretend that this has been anything other than a witch hunt.”

“I simply cannot stand by and allow my due process rights to be trampled on, and my good name to be tarnished.”

The legal watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, in a statement, called Cherifilus-McCormick’s resignation “beyond overdue,” saying CREW had called for her to leave the House two months ago.

“Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick did the right thing by stepping down, but she should not have waited until the moment before potential expulsion to do so,” said CREW President Donald Sherman in a statement.

“The wrongdoing alleged in the federal indictment and corroborated in the Committee’s investigation demonstrated that she should not have authority over the appropriation of taxpayer funds,” Sherman said.

“Rather than resigning sooner, she spent months dragging the scandal on while cashing paychecks from American taxpayers. You don’t get credit for doing the right thing only when forced to, after repeatedly doing the wrong thing.”

According to the indictment, a Southeast Asian company, acting as a middleman, compiled fake paperwork to appear as if it would be using the servers. It had a separate logistics firm repackage the servers to conceal them before going to China.

The defendants tried to fool the server company’s compliance team with “dummy” servers at the Southeast Asian company’s storage facilities, while the real servers had already been forwarded to China, according to the indictment. They pressured the compliance team into approving shipments, and also allegedly employed “dummy” servers during a visit from a U.S. export control officer.

The efforts have yielded around $2.5 billion in sales for the server maker since 2024, with servers sold for $510 million between late April 2025 and mid-May 2025 going to the Southeast Asian company and on to China, the indictment said. The plaintiff said the server maker had no U.S. Commerce Department license to export servers featuring Nvidia GPUs to China.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Thursday that the U.S. would “pressure” the International Energy Agency to move away from net zero — and quit from the global watchdog if it failed to do this.

Wright was speaking on the last day of an IEA ministerial meeting in Paris and shortly after he said the agency would need to reform for the U.S. to remain a long-term member.

“There has been such a group mentality, 10 years invested in a destructive illusion of net zero by 2050, that the U.S. will use all the pressure we have to get the IEA to eventually, in the next year or so, move away from this agenda,” Wright said, according to Reuters.

The 2015 Paris Agreement committed nations to “net zero”, the balancing of carbon emitted into the atmosphere and removed from it. The U.S., India and the European Union were among the polluters that ratified the accord.

Wright added that it was not Washington’s intention to leave the IEA, as there’s “always a risk” China could gain dominance in the agency if it did.

CNBC has reached out to the U.S. Department of Energy and the IEA for comment.

A long-running war of words

The IEA, which was established in 1974 to ensure the security of oil supplies, faced criticism from the Trump administration last year when it projected that “peak oil”, when global crude production will reach its highest point before entering an irreversible decline, will take place around 2030.

OPEC, the influential group of oil-exporting countries, accused the energy agency of fearmongering and risking the destabilization of the global economy. Wright called the IEA’s forecast “nonsensical.”

The energy watchdog later watered down its forecast, signaling in a major tonal shift that oil demand could keep growing through to the middle of the century.

Scientists have warned that global average temperatures must not increase by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, if the worst of the climate crisis is to be avoided.

This threshold is recognized as a crucial long-term target because tipping points become more likely beyond this level. Tipping points can lead to dramatic shifts or potentially irreversible changes to some of Earth’s largest systems.
