Chainlink CCIP Joins Central Bank Digital Asset Pilots

Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol is being used in central bank digital asset and tokenized settlement pilots, putting CCIP inside one of the more important institutional experiments in blockchain infrastructure.

The validated materials point to Chainlink’s role in pilots connected to Brazil’s Drex initiative and Hong Kong’s Ensemble network, as well as HKMA’s e-HKD+ work involving ANZ Bank’s A$DC. These are not commercial production systems. They are trials and experiments, but they matter because they show how public blockchain infrastructure concepts are being tested by regulated institutions.

For Chainlink, the significance is clear.

CCIP is being positioned as a cross-chain messaging and settlement layer for environments where security, interoperability, and compliance matter. Central bank pilots are exactly the kind of setting where those requirements are strict.

A digital asset system is not very useful if it cannot interact with other networks, currencies, or settlement environments. Cross-border trade, tokenized deposits, CBDCs, stablecoins, and tokenized assets all require secure communication between systems.

The protocol is designed to send messages and transfer value across chains. In institutional pilots, that capability can be used to test payment-versus-payment settlement, cross-border asset movement, and connectivity between different digital asset networks.

Drex, Ensemble, And e-HKD+

Brazil’s Drex project and Hong Kong’s Ensemble network are part of a broader institutional push to explore tokenized settlement.

Drex is Brazil’s digital real initiative, while Ensemble is Hong Kong’s tokenization sandbox. Connecting these types of systems can help test whether tokenized trade and payment flows can settle more efficiently across borders.

The e-HKD+ program adds another layer, especially with ANZ’s A$DC involvement.

Together, these pilots show that institutions are not only experimenting with isolated digital currencies. They are testing how different tokenized systems might communicate.

Buy now, pay later giant Affirm is looking to help renters break up housing payments in ways that align with their biweekly paychecks.

Affirm is piloting a program in partnership with financial technology platform Esusu that will allow renters to split their monthly rent in two equal payments every two weeks at 0% APR. There are no hidden or late fees, or compounding interest with this pilot program, either, according to Affirm.

Esusu helps renters build credit by reporting their on-time rent payments to major credit bureaus.

The pilot program is designed to give “eligible renters a flexible option for managing one of their largest monthly expenses,” Affirm said in a statement to FOX Business, calling it “a transparent option that offers flexibility for renters to align expenses with their paychecks.”

Affirm said it underwrites every application individually and only approves people for what it believes they can responsibly afford to repay.

“We’re approaching this use case thoughtfully and evaluating it alongside Esusu, which shares our focus on clear, consumer-first financial tools,” Affirm continued.

The company didn’t confirm when the pilot program would be officially rolled out as it is still in the early stages of the pilot.

LendingTree’s chief consumer finance analyst Matt Schulz told FOX Business that this could be useful to those on a tight budget, but he cautioned that it is too soon to make a final judgment.

“This is just another example of how it is getting easier seemingly by the day for people to use BNPL to finance most anything,” Schulz said.

He noted that this doesn’t appear to be a typical pay-in-four BNPL loan, which, if it was, he cautioned that there could be serious risks. For instance, Schulz noted that a consumer could still have people paying off the previous month’s BNPL loan for rent when the next month’s rent comes due. 

“That could get messy,” he said, adding that this financial tool can be really useful when used wisely, but “the danger with BNPL is when you have multiple loans that you have to manage.”

The union that represents Air Transat’s pilots said on Wednesday that its members have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike.

While the results give the pilot union’s governing body the authority to declare a strike as soon as Dec. 10, it is not in itself an immediate strike notice, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) said in a news release.

Air Transat stressed that this is a “common step in the collective bargaining process” and that operations were continuing as normal.

“The goal remains to negotiate a collective agreement that satisfies both parties, reflects market realities and those of the company, and recognizes the contribution of our pilots. We are confident that we will reach an agreement and thereby avoid any impact on our customers’ travel plans,” Air Transat said in a statement to CBC News.

Negotiations between ALPA and the airline began in January, three months before the collective agreement was set to expire.

A representative for the union said it is seeking a collective agreement that protects job security and improves “working conditions, compensation, and quality of life.” Over 99 per cent of the pilots who cast a ballot voted in favour of a strike if necessary, according to the union.

The two parties left conciliation on Nov. 18. They are currently in a 21-day cooling-off period that ends on Dec. 10, according to the union.

“This vote sends an undeniable message to Air Transat management: We are unified, resolute and have earned a contract that reflects today’s industry standards, not the standards from 2015,” said Bradley Small, chair of the Air Transat ALPA master executive council, in a press release.

In an interview with CBC News, Small added that he thinks the current contract Air Transat pilots are working under is at the “bottom of the barrel,” compared to the agreements WestJet and Air Canada pilots have.

“We don’t want to strike, we want a fair deal for a modern contract,” Small said.

Last October, Air Canada pilots, who are also represented by the ALPA union, ratified a four-year collective agreement that increased their wages by about 42 per cent cumulatively. And in 2023, WestJet’s pilots negotiated a 24 per cent pay bump over four years, which experts said at the time set a new standard for labour gains in the aviation industry.
