Contango Silver & Gold (NYSEAMERICAN:CTGO,TSX:CTGO is progressing its project pipeline on time and on budget. The company has published an updated mineral resource estimate (MRE) for its fully owned Kitsault Valley project in BC’s Golden Triangle as of September 2026, and is targeting to wrap up its 2026 drill program at the project by October.

Kitsault’s updated MRE demonstrates a 93 percent increase in indicated resources, which now stand at 89.55 million ounces (Moz) silver equivalent (AgEq) with 7.66 million tonnes (Mt) at 363 grams per tonne (g/t) AgEq. Meanwhile, the inferred mineral resources stand at 64.92 Moz AgEq, with 6.31 Mt at 320 g/t AgEq.

CEO Rick Van Nieuwenhuyse said that the company is operating “under budget” and executing as promised. “We’re on our way next year to be producing a preliminary economic assessment on mining the silver portion of the district (at Kitsault), and we continue drilling at Homestake.”

Kitsault Valley is among the company’s advanced exploration projects, together with the Lucky Shot and Johnson Tract projects in Alaska.

Van Nieuwenhuyse shared that underground drilling is currently taking place at Lucky Shot, with an MRE expected in the first half of 2027. A feasibility study with a mine plan and transportation plan are to follow in the second half of the same year.

The company is also building its underground tunnel at Johnson Tract next year, while all permits for the project are targeted to be completed by May 2028.

“Next year is also a monster year for Manh Choh in terms of production. It’s the highest point of production, about 75,000 to 80,000 ounces. That will generate in the neighborhood of US$200 million of free cashflow, more than enough to accommodate next year’s program and then build … and just keep the train moving.”

Talon Metals’ (TSX:TLO,OTCID:TLOFF) share price surged 29 percent after it released results showing a record intercept at its Tamarack project in Minnesota, US, on Wednesday (September 9).

The drill hole, 25TK0562A, returned grades of 13.37 percent nickel, 16.54 percent copper, 0.1 percent cobalt, 7.85 grams per metric ton (g/t) palladium, 14.49 g/t platinum and 8.56 g/t gold over 46.43 meters at a depth of 752.97 meters.

It includes a 26.22 meter interval with 14.95 percent nickel, 17.85 percent copper, 0.11 percent cobalt, 8.53 g/t palladium, 16.79 g/t platinum and 9.13 g/t gold starting at 758 meters.

“Any one of these grades will get your attention, but to see nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum, palladium, and gold all concentrated at these levels in the same rock is particularly significant and one of the many reasons polymetallic deposits like Tamarack are so exciting,” said Chief Exploration Officer Brian Goldner.

Talon reported that the results mark the longest combined massive sulfide unit and mixed massive sulfide unit recorded at the property so far.

The hole extends mineralization from the Vault zone by 50 meters to the southwest. Talon initially discovered the zone in May 2025 using a borehole electromagnetic (BHEM) survey to target deeper anomalies.

The company said it drilled a new hole from a previous hole to test a BHEM anomaly as part of ongoing step-out drilling, both laterally and at depth, at the Vault zone.

“Beyond the grades themselves, the step-out distance must be highlighted and underscores the potential strategic importance of Tamarack as a future domestic source of critical minerals,” said Talon CEO Darby Stacey.

Talon indicated it will continue to evaluate assay results and technical data while it advances the Vault zone.

The broader Tamarack project is being explored under an earn-in agreement between Talon Metals and Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO,NYSE:RIO,LSE:RIO) subsidiary Kennecott Exploration.

Talon currently owns a 51 percent stake in the property, but can earn up to 60 percent once it completes a feasibility study and makes a US$10 million cash payment to Kennecott before March 14, 2027.

The property lies about 90 kilometers west of Duluth and consists of two separate packages, Tamarack North and Tamarack South. The two properties host 18 kilometers of strike across more than 31,000 acres, with Talon’s main focus directed at Tamarack North, which hosts the primary deposit.

According to a November 2022 technical report, Tamarack North hosts an indicated resource of 8.56 million metric tons of ore with grades of 1.73 percent nickel, 0.92 percent copper, 0.05 percent cobalt, 0.34 g/t platinum, 0.21 g/t palladium and 0.17 g/t gold.

While global expansion accelerated following a turbulent first quarter, regional market conditions diverged sharply.

Strong growth in Europe, bolstered by consumer subsidy frameworks, contrasted with deep contractions in North America following the expiration of US federal tax incentives late last year.

Concurrently, domestic sales in China showed early signs of stabilization while automakers expanded overseas shipments to record levels.

The global EV market continues to be defined by regional divergence,” wrote a BMI Senior EV Analyst. “However, year-to-date EV sales growth increased yet again in July 2026 following the turbulent start to the year in both China and North America.”

                Regional divergence across major markets

European EV sales expanded 33 percent year-on-year in July to 450,000 units, pushing the region’s year-to-date growth rate to 28 percent.

Despite a 17 percent month-on-month contraction, momentum remained intact across major national markets. France recorded an 81 percent year-on-year sales increase, while sales grew 46 percent in Germany and 43 percent in the UK.

In Spain, year-to-date sales rose 34 percent ahead of the August 4 launch of the government’s new ‘Auto+’ program. The initiative provides base subsidies up to €4,500 (US$5,190) for passenger EVs, retroactively applicable to January 1, 2026, replacing the MOVES III scheme that expired at the end of 2025.

Conversely, North American EV sales fell 27 percent year-on-year in July to 140,000 units. The contraction follows the removal of US federal EV tax credits at the end of September 2025.

In Canada, regulators began allocating import permits under a bilateral quota agreement with China allowing up to 49,000 Chinese-made EVs annually at reduced tariff rates.

Authorities allocated more than half of the 24,500 permits available for the first six-month window by mid-August, including 2,400 permits issued during the first week of the month.

China’s domestic EV market contracted 5 percent year-on-year in July to 980,000 units, improving its year-to-date performance to -12 percent.

Despite lower absolute sales volumes compared to 2025, EV market penetration exceeded 50 percent across multiple months in 2026, up from 48 percent across the first seven months of 2025, as overall combustion vehicle sales dropped at a faster rate.

Chinese manufacturers also expanded international shipments, exporting a record 500,000 new energy vehicles in July.

Gold was shaping up to have a fairly calm week, but a stronger-than-expected US jobs report sent it well under US$4,400 per ounce as the period came to an end.

Silver also took a hit, dropping below US$69 per ounce.

The report, which shows that nonfarm payrolls rose by 172,000 in May, has further reduced expectations that the US Federal Reserve will cut interest rates.

Beyond that, the Iran war continues to impact gold, with increased conflict in the Middle East and overall uncertainty contributing to its ups and downs this week.

Although the US House has now backed a resolution geared at stopping the war until it’s authorized by Congress, the move is seen as largely symbolic.

There’s understandably a lot of focus on these day-to-day factors, but this week I heard from Chris Blasi of Neptune Global, who encouraged investors to take a step back and remember the bigger picture for gold. In his view, the metal’s key driver isn’t going anywhere:

“The (driver) that’s most consistent is the expansion of debt. There’s charts that show hard correlations between the growth in the US debt and the price of gold. It doesn’t move exactly — I mean, it’s just about exact, but there’s times when the debt is still expanding and gold may not be moving up immediately.

“But so, a person has to ask themselves, right — the thing that would truly hurt gold, in my opinion, in the long run, is if the US actually started paying down their debt, and the debt creation stopped or diminished markedly or materially. And that’s just not going to happen — it is not.”

Bullet briefing — Central banks buy, Russia makes bold claim

Central banks back in action

Central banks were back in action in April, purchasing a net 17 metric tons of gold.

According to the World Gold Council’s data, that’s a sizable rebound from March, when they sold a net 30 metric tons of the yellow metal as the Iran war began.

The organization says Poland was the top buyer for April at 14 metric tons, while China was next at 8 metric tons — that’s the highest level for the Asian nation since December 2024, and it pushes China’s gold-buying streak to an impressive 18 consecutive months.

Turkey, which attracted attention in March for selling 60 metric tons of gold, saw its reserves stay “virtually flat” in April. Its sales were reportedly for FX and liquidity purposes.

Gold reserves outpace treasuries

Underscoring gold’s importance to central banks, a new report from the European Central Bank (ECB) shows that the precious metal is now the world’s top reserve asset.

Gold accounted for 27 percent of all global central bank reserve assets as of the end of 2025, up from 20 percent the previous year. That puts it ahead of US treasuries at 22 percent.

While the ECB notes that this shift “largely reflects valuation effects,” and suggests that moving forward gold will face limitations as a reserve asset, it also notes that central bank gold buying points…

Global lithium consumption rose 20 percent in 2025 to approximately 263,000 tons, with the overwhelming majority of volume growth directed into cell manufacturing.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that electric vehicles and stationary storage systems now represent roughly 90 percent of the lithium-ion battery market.

Total sector deployment expanded more than sixfold between 2020 and 2025. In 2025 alone, global EV battery deployment grew by nearly 30 percent to reach 1.2 terawatt-hours, anchored by China, which commanded 60 percent of global automotive battery deployment.

“To all intents and purposes, lithium is basically driven by battery demand only,” Adam Webb, head of battery materials at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI), stated at a March industry summit in Toronto.

Webb noted that global EV sales expanded 22 percent in 2025, with strong growth continuing across China, Europe, and emerging markets.

However, this lock on supply has exposed the market to extreme volatility. Supply constraints and a swift shift into deficit caused spot battery-grade lithium carbonate prices to surge 95 percent, spiking from US$13,433 per metric ton in early December to US$26,278 by late January.

Upstream raw materials followed, with spodumene concentrate prices rising above US$2,000 per metric ton for the first time since late 2023.

In 2025, global lithium exploration expenditure ranked fourth among major commodities at US$595 million, trailing far behind gold and copper as mining companies pulled back from greenfield risk.

Near-term supply has tightened further following Zimbabwe’s February 25 suspension of raw mineral and lithium concentrate exports, an intervention aimed at forcing domestic processing that directly impacts 15 percent of China’s spodumene imports.

The focus on battery application meant the traditional industrial base for lithium has been heavily marginalized.

Ceramics and glass account for 4 percent of demand, where lithium mineral concentrates are added directly to reduce thermal expansion. Lubricating greases represent 2 percent, followed by air treatment at 1 percent and continuous casting mold flux powders at 1 percent.

Medical applications make up the final 1 percent of global supply. While small by volume, healthcare guidelines identify lithium as the most effective long-term treatment for stabilizing bipolar disorder and reducing relapse severity. Recent studies have also linked the metal to a potential early detection system for Alzheimer’s disease.

However, with the IEA projecting that…

Shares of MCFARLANE LAKE MINING (CSE:MLM,OTCQB:MLMLF) rose 25.64 percent this week, after the Canadian junior secured a US$4.86 million private placement led by well-known mining investor Michael Gentile.

Gentile is taking the bulk of the non-brokered placement, subscribing for US$4.57 million, while mining executive Pierre Beaudoin will cover the remainder.

Each unit, priced at roughly US$0.09, includes one common share and one warrant, exercisable at US$0.12 for three years. Upon closing, Gentile will hold a 19.67 percent stake in the company on a partially diluted basis.

According to the firm, the capital injection will pay down outstanding debentures and further fund its exploration at the Juby project by covering the general working capital.

“We are very pleased to welcome Michael Gentile and Pierre Beaudoin as strategic investors. Their experience in the mining sector and track record of supporting high-quality exploration and development companies aligns well with our vision for McFarlane Lake,” CEO Mark Trevisiol said in a recent press release.

Trevisiol added that the financing shores up the company’s balance sheet beyond its immediate operational needs.

Gentile’s entry follows a recent series of drill results at the Juby project, located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt of Ontario, Canada. On May 19, the company reported it had extended the gold mineralized envelope at the property’s Golden Lake deposit to 750 meters along strike.

Recent drilling intercepted wide bands of lower-grade mineralization.Step-out drilling 1,100 meters to the northwest also hit mineralization, expanding the active drill pattern to 1.6 kilometers.

Gentile pointed to these project fundamentals as the driver for the investment.

“McFarlane Lake ticks all the boxes I look for in a mining project: size, scale, infrastructure, grade and compelling exploration upside all in a proven Tier 1 jurisdiction and trading at only a $60M market cap,” Mr. Gentile said.

McFarlane has completed roughly 7,500 meters of its planned 13,000-meter drill program. The company is using the expanded drill data to model a revised resource estimate.

“Our strategy remains on track: releasing an updated resource statement in June and continuing to ready our site for a bulk sample of mineralization in 2027,” Trevisiol said.

Shares of Sunshine Silver Mining & Refining (NYSE:SSMR) surged 11 percent in their stock exchange debut on Thursday (June 4) after the Idaho-based miner raised US$270 million to resurrect one of the highest-grade silver assets in the US.

Trading under the ticker SSMR, the stock opened at US$15 a share. Sunshine priced its initial public offering of 20 million shares at US$13.50 each, landing at the bottom of its targeted US$13.50 to US$16.50 range.

The company’s flagship asset is the historic Sunshine Mine in Kellogg, Idaho, located within the Coeur d’Alene Mining District. The US$270 million capital injection will fund the steps required to bring the fully permitted site back online.

The deposit currently holds 103.9 million ounces of indicated silver resources at an average diluted grade of 1,022 grams per ton, alongside 159.8 million ounces of inferred resources. Management projects the mine will yield 6.7 million ounces of silver annually during its first five years of operation, ultimately averaging 5.8 million ounces over a 24-year mine life.

Beyond silver, the company is positioning the asset as a domestic supplier of antimony, a mineral increasingly prioritized due to its importance in military applications. The company is evaluating an existing permitted antimony plant on site.

Including its own byproduct, Sunshine estimates the facility could produce up to 34.5 million pounds of finished antimony a year, potentially covering up to 60 percent of current US demand.

Chairman Dr. Thomas S. Kaplan highlighted the strategic value of an American mine-to-mill-to-refinery platform capable of producing COMEX-eligible 99.99 silver bars alongside antimony metal.

“With both metals having been declared to be critical minerals by both the United States and China, we believe this autonomy away from geopolitics to be a significant advantage,” Kaplan said.

To reach commercial production, Sunshine must finalize its engineering plans. The company plans to leverage an estimated US$600 million in existing infrastructure and US$208 million invested over the past 16 years to modernize the site.

Following the listing, CEO Heather White said the immediate focus is completing infill drilling and engineering designs to support a feasibility study slated for early 2027.

“From there, we plan to begin mill construction and complete infrastructure upgrades, with the goal of delivering silver production in late 2028,” White added.

As of midday Friday (June 5) share were trading at US$13.76.

A royalty rate of 2.5 percent has been applied to all vanadium products in Western Australia as of February 4, 2026.

In a joint announcement by Minister for Mines and Petroleum David Michael and Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation Amber-Jade Sanderson, the government said that the new rate aims to incentivise production of vanadium in WA and encourage its emerging vanadium battery industry.

The proposal to introduce a royalty rate stems from an election commitment made by the Cook Government.

The move also aligns with plans to develop Australia’s first locally built, utility-scale vanadium flow battery, which is slated for installation in Kalgoorlie.

Called the vanadium battery energy storage system (VBESS), the 50-megawatt, 10-hour WA-made vanadium flow battery in Kalgoorlie will be the largest of its kind in Australia.

It is expected to create 150 jobs during construction and targets operational status by 2029.

“Installing a Vanadium Battery Energy Storage System is a major election commitment under our Made in WA plan, to diversify the economy, enable Western Australia to become a renewable energy powerhouse, and to make more things here,” Sanderson commented.

A local vanadium electrolyte production and battery assembly industry in Kalgoorlie is also part of the government’s plan, which it intends to build with the private sector to stimulate opportunities for downstream processing and exports.

The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) welcomed the revised royalty in a statement, saying that this delivers much-needed support for developers and investors at a critical point for the emerging sector.

“With Western Australia hosting some of the world’s most prospective vanadium resources, this important mineral underpins long-duration energy storage and supports broader decarbonisation and grid stability objectives,” added AMEC CEO Warren Pearce.

“Importantly, today’s announcement also maintains a zero royalty rate on vanadium

electrolyte production, reinforcing the opportunity to move beyond raw material extraction and into higher-value adding and battery supply chains, particularly in regional centres such as Kalgoorlie.”

The government said that expressions of interest remain open, inviting local businesses to partake in the project.

The record was built on an unusually spare formula: use insurance float as a source of low-cost capital, buy businesses with durable cash flows and allow time to do most of the work. That approach produced long-held stakes in companies such as Coca-Cola and American Express, while Berkshire expanded into railroads, utilities and manufacturing through wholly owned subsidiaries.

“If it was that easy to do again, somebody would be doing it,” Bill Stone, chief investment officer at Glenview Trust Company and a Berkshire shareholder, said. “You think about the duo that having Charlie Munger as your partner, it’s just hard to imagine that coming together again anytime soon.”

As Buffett relinquishes the helm, investors are increasingly focused on what disappears with him. Seth Klarman, founder of the Baupost Group, called Buffett “an American role model” and said his retirement represents more than a leadership transition.

“The world of investing will be different without Warren Buffett at the helm of Berkshire,” Klarman said in a tribute.

Buffett has said he’s “going quiet” as he steps back, signaling a reduced public presence even as he remains chairman. Abel will assume responsibility for Berkshire’s annual shareholder letters, a tradition Buffett began in 1965 that became essential reading on Wall Street for its plainspoken lessons on markets, management and capital allocation. Buffett will keep penning a Thanksgiving message, however.

The annual letters were one pillar of Buffett’s influence. The other was Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting. Often dubbed “Woodstock for Capitalists,” the gathering drew tens of thousands of investors to Omaha, Nebraska, each year for hours of unscripted Q&A. The event cemented Buffett’s role not just as a steward of capital, but as a steady public voice investors trusted to put market upheaval into perspective.

Welcome to the Investing News Network’s weekly look at the best-performing Canadian mining stocks on the TSX, TSXV and CSE, starting with a round-up of Canadian and US news impacting the resource sector.

Statistics Canada released July’s monthly mineral production survey on Friday (September 19). The data showed gold production increased month-over-month, while copper and silver declined; shipments, however, saw broad declines from June for all three metals.

Gold production increased significantly to 18,855 kilograms compared to 16,935 kilograms in June. Meanwhile, copper production fell to 37.99 million kilograms from 39.17 million kilograms in June, and silver production slipped to 25,345 kilograms from 28,390 kilograms.

As for shipments, gold shipments slid to 16,748 kilograms from 18,554, copper fell to 39.28 million kilograms from 45.96 million, and silver decreased to 26,397 kilograms from 31,181.

StatsCan released August’s consumer price index (CPI) data on Tuesday (September 16), the day before the Bank of Canada’s interest rate decision. The release showed that all-items inflation rose 1.9 percent on a yearly basis, up from the 1.7 percent recorded in July.

The agency attributed the faster growth in headline inflation in part to a slower year-over-year decline in gasoline prices, which fell 12.7 percent in August versus 16.1 percent in July, resulting in a less moderating effect on inflation than during the previous month.

StatsCan noted that without volatile gasoline prices included, CPI in August rose 2.4 percent year-over-year after registering a 2.5 percent increase in the three previous months.

The Bank of Canada chose to reduce its benchmark lending rate by 25 basis points to 2.5 percent on Wednesday (September 17), noting “a weaker economy and less upside risk to inflation.” It marks the first cut since March, when it set the rate at 2.75 percent.

South of the border, the US Federal Reserve held its September meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee on Tuesday and Wednesday. The US central bank also chose to cut 25 basis points from the Federal Funds Rate, bringing it to the 4 percent to 4.25 percent range. It is the first change to the interest rate since the last 25 basis point cut in December 2024.
