Faith has been shaken in a trade that was viewed as a digital rival to gold as a store of value, and by some others as a risk-on asset that would continue to boom alongside a crypto-friendly Trump administration.

Since the all-time high price last October, bitcoin has lost almost half its value and its inability to bounce back in trading is increasing fears about another “crypto winter” — a prolonged slump similar to the time of the FTX crash in 2022 when bitcoin fell from near $50,000 to as low as $15,000. In the past month alone, bitcoin is down over 25%.

But crypto investing experts on the latest CNBC “ETF Edge” say a look at the recent flows into and out of bitcoin and crypto exchange-trade funds suggests that long-term investors are not abandoning the asset class. Money has certainly moved out, but they say not to a level that suggests long-term investor panic.

Over the past three months, the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has seen approximately $2.8 billion in net outflows. That is substantial, but over the past year, the BlackRock ETF has attracted near $21 billion in net inflows, according to VettaFi. The broader spot bitcoin ETF category shows a similar pattern. Over the past three months, the ETF asset class has experienced roughly $5.8 billion in net outflows. Over the past year, across all spot bitcoin ETFs, net inflows remain positive by $14.2 billion. Money is exiting, but the majority of assets have remained in place, and some ETF experts say the money being pulled isn’t from the long-term investor or financial advisor that have begun allocating to the asset class.

“It’s not the ETF investors who are driving the sell off,” said Matt Hougan, Bitwise Asset Management CIO, on “ETF Edge.”

He says much of the broader pressure in bitcoin may be coming from crypto investors who accumulated positions over many years and are now trimming exposure. “It’s really a tale of two sides,” Hougan said. He also said there are hedge funds and short-term traders who use the most liquid ETFs as tools and may pull capital quickly when momentum turns negative.

At CNBC’s Digital Finance Forum last week, Galaxy CEO Mike Novogratz said the crypto market’s “era of speculation” may be ending, and returns going forward will be more like a long-term investment holding. “It’s going to be real world assets with much lower returns,” he said at the CNBC event in New York City last Tuesday. “Retail people don’t get into crypto because they want to make 11% annualized,” he said. “They get in because they want to make 30 to one, eight to one, 10 to one.”

Financial advisors at Wall Street banks are among those adding bitcoin to investor portfolios, and adding their own branded crypto ETFs. And longer horizon investors who hold crypto as a small allocation within diversified portfolios may be willing to ride out volatility, Hougan said. If…

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Patrick Witt, a senior White House crypto adviser, told reporters that banks should not see stablecoin yield programs as an existential threat.

He argued that banks and crypto firms can both offer similar products to customers and that the controversy over rewards is fixable through compromise.

Reports note he made the comments in a sit-down with Yahoo Finance as lawmakers and industry groups continue talks.

Banks Can Offer Similar Products

Big lenders have options, and some are already moving to use them. According to meetings and follow-ups, several banks are seeking OCC charters and exploring ways to provide stablecoin-style accounts to customers, which undercuts the idea that yield programs automatically steal deposits from traditional banks.

That dynamic helped bring both sides into a recent White House convening, but the talks did not settle the core dispute over whether platforms should be allowed to pay rewards to holders.

Stablecoin Yields Hold Up Legislation

At the center of the fight is the CLARITY Act, a bill meant to draw lines between the SEC and the CFTC while creating a basic asset taxonomy for cryptocurrencies.

Reports say the debate over rewards and interest has become a major hold-up, with senators and industry groups trading proposals and pushbacks as they try to hash out workable language. SEC and CFTC are both part of the tug-of-war over who gets to police different tokens and services.

BTCUSD now trading at $69,818. Chart: TradingView

A Race Against The Calendar

Pressure to finish a deal is rising because lawmakers face an election calendar that could change the political math. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that if Democrats win back the House the bipartisan coalition working on the bill could fracture, making rapid progress less likely.

That warning is echoed around Capitol Hill by lobbyists and some industry leaders, who say the current window to pass a compromise is dwindling.

A Narrow Window To Act

The White House has signaled it wants a solution before the fall slog of midterm politics takes hold. White House advisers have urged both sides to find middle ground, saying a functioning framework would unlock large pools of institutional capital now sitting on the sidelines.

Reports have disclosed that these investors are reluctant to deploy funds until the rules are clearer, which is one reason the administration is pressing for movement.

The debate is not only technical; it is political and strategic. Lawmakers will need to balance banks’ worries about deposits with crypto firms’ demand to preserve business models that rely on customer rewards.

For consumers, the immediate effect will depend on how any compromise treats protections, transparency and how rewards are funded.

For markets, the bigger prize is legal certainty — and that prize is getting…

The software sector faced renewed market concerns this week after artificial intelligence company Anthropic released new AI tools, triggering a sell-off in software-as-a-service and data provider stocks.

Anthropic’s new AI tools, built for its Claude “Cowork” AI agent, are designed to handle complex professional workflows that many software and data providers sell as core products.

While Palantir’s slide was partly triggered by a report from short seller Andrew Left’s Citron Research, which called the company “detached from fundamentals and analysis,” there was no single trigger for the broader pullback.

What you need to know today

Fed officials divided over inflation and employment worries. Central bank governors generally agreed there were risks on both sides. But a couple — breaking from the majority — saw the labor market woes as more pressing, according to minutes of the Fed’s July meeting.

Trump likely to pick Kevin Hassett as next Fed Chair. The director of the National Economic Council firmly led the pack, according to a CNBC Fed Survey. However, respondents think the president “should” pick former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh.

No new solar or wind power projects, Trump says. Renewable energy projects will no longer receive approval, Trump posted Wednesday on Truth Social. Despite the obvious legal setback, X (formerly Twitter) crypto analyst CasiTrades remains unfazed, insisting that there is no need for investors to lose confidence.

CasiTrade’s chart shows that XRP has reached a critical support zone around $2.07-$2.10, aligning with the 0.618 and 0.5 Fibonacci levels, respectively. So far, XRP has held on firmly to this zone, with the $2.10 support level successfully defending through the daily close.

Fibonacci levels on the chart also provide further technical confluence, with the immediate resistance marked at $2.13 (0.236 Fib) and $2.145 (0.382 Fib). A stronger resistance barrier is also forming around the 0.5 Fibonacci Extension level at $2.16.

According to CasiTrades, if XRP can reclaim and close above these resistance levels, particularly $2.145, it could confirm the end of the ABC correction.
Investors are on a rollercoaster ride and not the fun kind with the U.S. stock market under extreme volatility amid heavy selling as President Donald Trump stands firm, wielding his broad tariff strategy against most of our trading partners.

Bear Markets & Correction Territory

The S&P 500 briefly hit a bear market on Monday, following the Nasdaq Composite, which fell into bear market territory or down 20% from its most recent all-time highs on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is shy of its own as of Monday’s close.

This as the CBOE’s Volatility Index, or VIX for short, which measures volatility, spiked to the highest level in five years, hovering at a level of 46.

Don’t Panic

While unnerving for many Main Street investors watching their portfolios, 401(k)s or retirement accounts, selling into a selloff is a big no-no for long-term investors.

“You never sell in a panic, you never ever sell in a panic,” said Ken Fisher, founder, Fisher Investments, which oversees $295 billion in assets, during an interview on ‘Varney & Co.’

Panic Selling Will Cost You

Those who may engage in panic selling will lose out when the market rebounds, according to an analysis by Fidelity shared with FOX Business.

For example, $10,000 invested in the S&P 500 from Jan. 1, 1988, through Dec. 31, 2023, would miss out on gains of more than $264,000 by missing just the best five days of investing.

Furthermore, the firm notes that “[h]istorically, every severe downturn has eventually given way to further growth,” with the firm showing hypothetical decisions made during the Global Financial Crisis from 2007 through 2012 for a portfolio with a 70% stock/30% bond mix and an account balance of $400,000 and a workplace contribution plan of $15,000.

“It took 52 months for investments to return to the highs set before the Global Financial Crisis” Fidelity wrote. Those who stayed the course saw their account balance rise by about $500,000. Those who moved to cash and stop contributing saw their balances drop to around $350,000.

“You are seeing target prices being dropped for the year, earnings estimates being dropped, the whole gamut. I think it’s good to buy in times of fear like this. This is when the risk is probably less and the upside is greater,” said Jim Paulsen, former Chief Investment Strategist at Wells Fargo.

That said, the tariff push is in its early days, and it’s unclear when and how the dust will settle.
