Tokenization could free up tens of billions of dollars in capital tied up in assets used as collateral across the global financial system, Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman said.

Tokenizing assets such as Treasurys, equities and money market funds, along with the flow of money, could make collateral more liquid, Friedman told CNBC’s Joanna Ossinger, managing editor and head of APAC Digital News, at the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore.

“If you tokenize all those instruments along with the flow of money, then the collateral becomes very fluid,” Friedman said.

Tokenization involves representing financial assets, such as stocks and bonds, as digital tokens that can be transferred using blockchain technology.

Friedman said institutional interest in tokenization has grown over the past year, pointing in part to the passage of the Genius Act in the U.S., which established a regulatory framework for stablecoins.

“If we can tokenize money, then we can tokenize the flow of capital,” she said.

That growing institutional interest is converging with demand from retail investors, who have long sought the ability to trade around the clock, according to Friedman. The retail ecosystem “has been about 10 years ahead,” she said.

The push toward 24/7 trading

Moving to a fully 24/7 market would be a major undertaking for the financial industry, Friedman said.

“The easiest part is the exchange infrastructure,” she said.

Friedman said that financial institutions have traditionally had periods when markets are closed to update systems and manage risk. But operating around the clock would require those processes, including risk and collateral management, to take place continuously.

“Everything has to be real time all the time,” she said.

Artificial intelligence could help financial institutions manage that transition. Nasdaq has launched a series of digital agents within its risk management platform that initially provide recommendations, Friedman said.

Over time, banks could use those agents to take more direct action, she added.

“AI is critical for 24/7,” Friedman said.

Bridging crypto and traditional finance

Companies outside the U.S. are showing interest in tokenization and access to American capital markets, Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, told CNBC.

Sethi pointed to a company generating roughly $25 million in revenue that was exploring ways to access capital markets, as well as larger international companies interested in tokenization and U.S. public listings.

He said tokenization could help expand access to capital markets for companies around the world.

However, round-the-clock trading may not be suitable for everything, according to Friedman.

“Not every asset is liquid enough to support a 24/7 environment,” she said.

Still, greater connectivity across the…

Last Friday, India was in the grips of iPhone fever as customers formed long queues outside Apple stores in major cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. Some reportedly waited for over 10 hours just to be the first to buy the latest iPhone, while others travelled for hours from smaller Indian cities to Apple stores in big cities to upgrade their iPhones.

A common sentiment among customers was that features did not matter, but owning the latest iPhone did, affirming the appeal of the smartphone as a key status symbol.

The demand for the latest iPhone is stronger than the iPhone 17 launched last year, experts told CNBC, adding that this year the U.S. smartphone brand’s market share in India will touch double digits for the first time.

“Apple’s volume market share is likely to hit 10% in 2026, reaching double digits in a single calendar year for the first time, up from 4% in 2022,” Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint Research, told CNBC.

He added that based on the initial channel checks, the iPhone 18 Pro series is seeing nearly 20% higher demand than the iPhone 17 series a year ago.

The $2.3 billion initial public offer of shares in India’s National Stock Exchange has received a frenzied response from investors, drawing bids worth more than $10 billion despite its hefty price-to-earnings multiple, which values it above several U.S. stock exchange businesses such as Nasdaq.

Driven by strong demand from institutional and high-net-worth buyers, the NSE IPO secured bids for 505.81 million shares on Monday, 5.7 times the 88.64 million shares on offer.

As part of the IPO, the company also raised 67.5 billion rupees ($704 million) last week from anchor investors such as the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and India’s top life insurer Life Insurance Corporation of India.

The NSE IPO is the country’s biggest listing so far this year and the second largest ever after Hyundai Motor India’s share offer of $3.3 billion in 2024.

The offer has been one of the most anticipated large listings this year in India and has been in the works since 2016. The business offers investors a strong play on India’s broadening retail participation in capital markets.

According to the country’s economic survey released earlier this year, equity investments, which were once a limited part of household balance sheets, have become a “significant component of financial wealth.” The share of equity and mutual funds in annual household financial savings increased to 15.2% in the financial year ending March 2025 from 2% in the financial year ending March 2012, it said.

India is among the top 10 equity markets globally with a total market cap of around 492 trillion rupees ($5.1 trillion), and NSE is the main exchange. It commands a 93% share of India’s cash market and accounts for nearly 100% of the country’s equity futures trading, alongside 75% of equity options trading, according to the IPO filing.

NSE’s “asset-light business model enables consistently high margins and cash generation,” Indian brokerage Geojit Financial Services said in a report on Sept. 16, asking investors to subscribe to the IPO.

The report added that the growing capital market participation and “increasing financialization” in India provided NSE with “a strong long-term growth runway.”

NSE is valued at a price-to-earnings ratio of 42.9 times based on the upper end of the IPO price band and earnings per share for the year ended in March 2026, as per a report by Indian brokerage Yes Securities.

In contrast, stock exchange companies in the U.S., the world’s largest equity market, are trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of less than 24 times. Nasdaq trades at price-to-earnings of 23.6 times, while Intercontinental Exchange trades at 21.9 times, according to data from LSEG.

Earlier this year, Sundararaman Ramamurthy, the managing director of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), a competitor of the NSE, said that growing local investor participation had shielded the Indian markets from a freefall even as foreign investors exited in large numbers.

A key tech-stock volatility metric options traders have been watching all year is reversing, sending a sign to investors that the U.S. bond market may now be usurping AI optimism as the primary driver of the stock market.

The spread between the volatility of big tech names and the rest of the stock market – measured most frequently by the difference between the Cboe’s VIXEQ and VIX indexes – blew out to record highs this summer as tech giants behind the AI boom regularly moved hundreds of billions of dollars of market cap per day while the rest of the market stayed stagnant. Now the trend is reversing, with traders selling broad chunks of index-wide equity exposure as VIX jumps to the highest since April relative to VIXEQ.

Paired with an accelerating sell-off in U.S. Treasury bonds and the 10-year yield approaching a three-year high of 5 percent, it’s a sign that investors are likely shifting their focus to macroeconomics and policy as the primary catalysts for the market’s direction.

“Throughout the summer single-name implied volatility raced ahead of S&P 500 implied volatility as traders discounted macro issues and focused on name-specific stories, particularly in the AI space,” Scott Nations, president at Nations Indexes, said in an email. “That trend is reversing as resurgent inflation—fueled by higher oil prices — the Fed’s response at its September 16th meeting, and other political and geopolitical concerns dominate thinking.”

Crude oil futures are back above $100 for the first time since May and energy stocks in the S&P 500 Index made fresh highs Thursday as the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) extended its lead over technology stocks as the best-performing sector of the year, now up 43 percent.

Volatility in 18 of 19 stocks tracked by Nations Indexes’ VolDex metric – a volatility gauge that uses at-the-money options prices – collapsed on Thursday, according to Nations. Exxon Mobil was the exception.

There’s one other key factor sucking volatility out of the AI trade that’s unrelated to bonds, oil and the Federal Reserve – the end of earnings season, a natural catalyst for elevated volatility around big binary events. There’s also a feedback loop of sorts between stock prices and demand for options among retail traders: when popular stocks like Micron and SanDisk stop going up, the options flows that lean bullish slow down.

Implied volatility in Micron fell from a high of 112 prior to its late June earnings to as low as 58 last week, despite the share price declining. Similarly, in SpaceX, despite gaining 30 percent since its August report, volatility has fallen from a high of 122 to 56.

“The cross market/single stock to index volatility relationship has normalized,” said Kevin Davitt, head of index options content at Nasdaq. “The epicenter of the divergence earlier this summer was the semis where we saw semis up with vol up ripple into the index options…

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s first Innovation Advisory Committee meeting convened on Thursday to discuss the latest in prediction markets regulation, including growing concerns on “mention markets” found on the platforms.

The CFTC’s Chairman Michael Selig, who is the only official on the federal agency’s typically five-member commission board, said the committee’s role would be to provide input on CFTC’s decisions which would strengthen regulations on markets.

Consisting of over 30 members, the committee includes top brass from Robinhood, Nasdaq and CME. The group first discussed the regulation landscape on crypto and artificial intelligence, but the most impassioned discussions revolved around prediction markets.

Polymarket’s CEO and founder, Shayne Coplan and Kalshi’s co-founder Luana Lopes Lara, were also present at the roughly three-hour-long meeting.

Key concerns that came up at Thursday’s meeting include self-certification for event contracts, as well as “mention markets” — contracts where traders speculate on certain words being used in a speech or an earnings call — and their susceptibility to manipulation. Committee members also discussed a regulatory roadmap for prediction markets.

Self-certification for prediction market platforms

At Thursday’s meeting, Terry Duffy, the chair and CEO of CME Group, took one of the most aggressive stances on how prediction markets should operate.

In compliance with the Commodity Exchange Act, prediction market platforms can propose, file and certify event contracts without the CFTC’s prior approval. This is known as self-certification. Duffy noted this method, which allows platforms to speed up the process of posting new event contracts, can make markets vulnerable to manipulation.

“There’s been 2,500 self-certifications since this administration was taking office in January of 2025, of which none have been opposed,” Duffy said. “There’s been a lot of self-certifications around products that are in violation of core principles.”

After Duffy raised his concerns on market manipulation, Lopes Lara asked him if CME has ever had issues with insider trading.

“If you’d like to have a debate, I’m happy to have a debate with you,” he responded.

Lopes Lara stated her support of self-certification, noting that it’s beneficial for timely events. “We need to be able to have these markets fast for our users,” she said.

Robinhood’s CEO flags ‘mention markets’

Duffy also highlighted recent instances of insider trading on prediction markets. This includes the April arrest of a U.S. soldier following bets on the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and a teleprompter operator facing federal investigation in connection with bets…

The Journal said Polymarket ensured it looked as though content creators it used were winning on the platform when, in fact, they were not using any of their own money. That report led to an investigation by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission — the federal regulator for prediction markets.

Countries are racing to expand their spy satellite fleets, as the war in Ukraine forces them to reconsider the intelligence they would rely on in a conflict, the CEO of a space-tech firm told CNBC.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 marked a “pivotal moment” for the space industry, ICEYE co-founder and CEO Rafal Modrzewski told CNBC on Tuesday.

Europe, as well as Japan, India and Brazil, are now looking to substantially expand their satellite fleets, he said.

The market has “suddenly tenfolded in size,” Modrzewski said, adding that countries increasingly view the technology as critical to securing their sovereignty.

Space, he added, is shifting from a capability that merely supports military operations to “a primary asset that will determine who is going to win or lose.”

Governments build out satellite fleets

European nations’ spending on space rose 12% to 13.5 billion euros in 2025, “mainly due to increased national defence spending,” led by Germany, according to a European Space Agency report published last month.

ICEYE makes radar-imaging satellites that governments can use for surveillance, reconnaissance and intelligence gathering, using a technology called synthetic aperture radar, or SAR.

SAR satellites use radar rather than conventional cameras to image the Earth’s surface, allowing them to collect data at night, through clouds, and during poor weather.

The Finnish-Polish firm raised €450 million in new capital in June at a valuation of more than €10 billion. The total Series F transaction exceeded €1 billion, including secondary share sales, the company said.

The round marked the first investment by the EU’s new Scaleup Europe Fund, the roughly 5-billion-euro initiative established to address Europe’s shortage of growth capital to help promising European technology companies scale.

Modrzewski said access to capital has been one of the hurdles preventing European startups from becoming long-term global leaders capable of competing with U.S. and Chinese rivals.

It comes as Europe’s defense sector is scrambling to build its defense industrial base after years of underinvestment and reliance on U.S. security guarantees that have been called into question under President Donald Trump.

NATO allies last year agreed to spend 5% of GDP on defense and defense-related infrastructure by 2035, as leaders emphasize the growing threat of Russia.

At the same time, wars in Ukraine and Iran have demonstrated the growing role of technologies like drones, artificial intelligence and space-based surveillance in modern warfare.

The challenge of scaling in Europe

Modrzewski said the company is not ruling out an eventual listing on the U.S. Nasdaq, but has not decided when or where it could go public.

He said Europe’s fragmented capital markets could factor into that decision.

“We are clearly a European company working for European sovereignty. We would have loved to be able to list in Europe, but of course there are other considerations,”…

Here’s how the company did:

Loss per share: 22 cents

Revenue: $193.4 million

The company’s revenue increased 92% in the first quarter from $99.5 million a year earlier, according to a statement. Net loss shrank to $14 million from $23.9 million, or 46 cents per share, a year ago.

Capitalizing on investor interest in infrastructure for running AI models, Cerebras went public on the Nasdaq in May. After pricing its IPO at $185, Cerebras saw its stock open at $350 and close at $311.07.

The shares have since dropped 28%, closing on Tuesday at $226.72.

Founded in 2015, the Cerebras raised over $6 billion in the offering, the most for a U.S. technology company since Uber‘s debut in 2019.

For the second quarter, Cerebras said it expects core revenue growth of 88% from a year earlier to $914 million. And the company said full-year core revenue will be between $855.5 million and $865 million, representing 69% growth at the midpoint.

Days after Elon Musk’s SpaceX made its debut on the Nasdaq, much ink has been spilt over the company, the valuation, and its place in the burgeoning tech space.

The company’s stratospheric IPO has made founder Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire, and if the first day’s price action is anything to go by, investors are still very optimistic. SpaceX closed at $161, jumping 19% from its offer price of $135 per share.

Speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia,” Steve Westly, founder and managing partner of The Westly Group and a former board member of Musk’s Tesla, noted that the company attracted a lot of retail investors, but added that it have to deliver results, and fast.

“Retail investors bought $100 billion in shares, and you’ve got to ask the question, are some of them going to get panicky if SpaceX misses a few quarters, because this stuff is not easy to do.”

In a now-deleted post on X, Musk said that SpaceX “might be able” to reach approximately $1 trillion in revenue by 2030, and added that he would be “surprised” if revenue is not greater than that figure by 2031.

“Investors at SpaceX, I believe, will get pretty grumpy after three or four quarters if he doesn’t meet some of the growth projections that they made in the S1,” Westly added, referring to the SEC filing used by companies planning on going public.

Some views that the trillion-dollar IPO were overvalued were swirling ahead of SpaceX’s debut.

Matthew Maley, Chief Market Strategist at asset management firm Miller Tabak. said that “we’ll merely say that we agree [the IPO] went very well, but we also think it is much too overvalued.”

While the stock does not have a formal price-to earnings ratio, Musk’s $1.75 trillion valuation currently reflects a P/E ratio of almost 100 times.

In comparison, Nvidia, arguably the world’s most valuable company, trades with a P/E ratio of just over 31 times, while Apple trades at about 35 times.

This overvalued view is also shared by Morningstar equity analyst Nicolas Owens, who said last week that the stock is “significantly overvalued.”

The firm has a fair value estimate for SpaceX of $63 per share, and said on June 11 that the company had only a 7% chance of hitting its “moonshot” scenario of $154 a share.

Nonetheless, the stock could prove to be a good buy if investors are willing to ride it out.

“We do believe that very long-term investors will do fine,” Maley said, with Westly also expressing optimism on the company’s future path.

“No one’s going to hand this to them. He and the team there, I think Gwynne Shotwell is extraordinary, have some tough hills to climb, but if anybody can do it, it may be the combination of Gwynne and Elon,” Westly said, referring to SpaceX’s president and chief…
