Amodei was noticeably absent from Trump’s glitzy state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, as other tech bigwigs — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg — were photographed rubbing elbows with government officials. Amodei had a scheduling conflict, so Trump invited him to a private dinner, according to a source familiar with the details who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The meeting, first reported by Axios, comes at a high-stakes moment for Anthropic, which is gearing up for what’s widely expected to be a blockbuster IPO. The company’s precarious relationship with the Trump administration has been under strain for much of the last year, so Amodei’s sit-down with the president could serve as a valuable opportunity to ease tensions.

“President Trump has been clear: America will lead the world in Super Intelligence, while protecting American consumers,” a White House official said in a statement, in response to CNBC’s inquiry about Sunday’s dinner. “We will drive innovation, strengthen American competitiveness, and ensure this transformative technology works for the American people.”

Amodei drew Trump’s ire earlier this month by publicly urging the AI industry to slow down the pace of advanced model development and better address potential risks. He published a three-step proposal and called for additional government oversight, which angered the president even as it gained the support of other industry leaders like Altman and Musk.

“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “The Trump Administration has stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things,’ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a ‘perfect little angel’ – and we will continue to do so!”

Amodei was already in a difficult spot with the president, because he supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election and was a vocal critic of Trump.

But before Amodei’s call for a slowdown rocked the tech sector, Anthropic’s relationship with the Trump administration appeared to be on the mend.

Ryan Serhant speaks to Fox News Digital at his SoHo headquarters, discussing how city tax policy, sky-high rents and changing buyer habits are driving wealth out of major metros and into growth states like Ohio, Alabama and the Carolinas.

National coverage of American migration routinely focuses on political rhetoric and people fleeing to states like Florida and Texas, but it may be overlooking the core economic realities dictating where families and capital actually settle.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, SERHANT. founder and CEO Ryan Serhant argued that the missing piece of the migration story boils down to how state policies impact homebuyers’ wallets and quality of life. Rather than a total collapse of major metros, Serhant said, capital is stretching into secondary markets where better job growth, lower tax burdens and strong infrastructure offer a better return on investment.

“I think it’s a bit overblown that wealth is migrating out of major American cities. I think that people aren’t necessarily moving as much as they are multiplying,” Serhant told Fox News Digital. “We now have more clients that have multiple homes than at any other point in my career. And they all want ease of access to great cities without necessarily maybe paying to be in the center.”

“If you look at the American housing market just through the news media, you would think that the American city is over, the metropolis is dead, and people are scattering. And what you actually see is wealth multiplying to the benefit of both the individuals and the real estate assets. And stretching. Markets have actually just become bigger,” he continued. “People are multiplying their assets, and they want to be where they want to be, and are willing to stretch the boundary. It’s not so much, ‘people escaping.’”

THE U.S. CITIES WHERE HOME PRICES ARE FALLING THE FASTEST

Serhant recently expanded his brokerage into Texas and Colorado, after the firm’s Texas launch marked its expansion into its 17th state. Outside his New York City home base, SERHANT. also has a presence in major luxury enclaves in South Florida, such as Palm Beach and Miami, where luxury prices have climbed sharply, while the brokerage also operates in Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale.

At the same time, Serhant pointed to regional migration patterns showing growth in inland hubs, including Huntsville, Alabama.

According to U.S. Census estimates, Texas and Florida were the nation’s top two states for numeric population growth from 2024 to 2025, while a number of secondary markets have also posted strong gains. The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro area ranked fifth nationally for numeric population growth from 2024 to 2025, while the city of Huntsville, Alabama, has grown 8.7% since 2020.

Japan’s economy expanded 1.1% in the second quarter on an annualized basis, missing expectations for 2% growth as softer domestic demand strong exports.

The figure compared to the 2.1% in the previous quarter.

This is the first full quarter to include the impact of the Iran war, which has brought energy prices higher for business and households.

Exports were the main driver of growth, with shipments from the country beating expectations for all three months of the quarter. However, this was helped by the weak yen as opposed to simply a higher volume of shipments.

Earlier this month, the Bank of Japan released its economic activity outlook, and raised its GDP growth outlook marginally to 0.6% from 0.5% for its 2026 fiscal year ending March 2027.

“Japan’s economy is expected to continue growing moderately, albeit at a decelerated rate,” the central bank said, pointing at high crude oil prices from the conflict in the Middle East.

However, this is likely to be partially offset by measures from the government to curb high oil prices for households, as well as an increase in global AI-related demand. Many Japanese companies are involved in the semiconductor supply chain.

China’s economy in the second quarter grew at its weakest pace since 2022, as an accelerating slide in investments deepened the strain on growth while consumption stayed subdued.

Gross domestic product growth came in at 4.3% in the April to June period, data from the National Statistics Bureau showed Wednesday, missing economists’ forecast for 4.5% growth in a Reuters poll, and slowing from 5% in the first quarter.

That second-quarter growth came below Beijing’s full-year growth target range of 4.5% to 5%, the least ambitious goal in decades, amid tensions with trade partners, including the U.S. and the European Union, and sluggish domestic demand.

Urban fixed-asset investment, including real estate development and infrastructure projects, declined 5.7% in the first six months from a year earlier, worse than expectations for a 4.9% drop in a Reuters poll, and steepening from a 4.1% contraction in the first five months.

In June, China’s retail sales grew 1%, rebounding from a 0.6% drop in the prior month and exceeding economists’ forecast for a 0.1% fall. Retail sales in May posted their first monthly decline since late 2022, dragged down by tepid demand and merchants’ steep discounting.

Industrial output expanded 5.3% in June from a year ago, stronger than the forecast 4.7% growth, and gaining pace from 4.5% expansion in May.

Chinese economy has grappled with a deepening supply-demand imbalance. Robust industrial production and exports tied to the global AI investment boom continue to power headline growth, even as consumption and private investment weakens amid a prolonged property downturn and volatile energy prices.

Urban investment slumped for the first time in decades last year, falling 3.8% from a year earlier, as a prolonged property downturn and tighter constraints on local governments’ borrowing have hampered one of China’s traditional growth drivers.

Chinese urban unemployment stood at 5% in June. The leadership is targeting an unemployment rate of less than 5.5% over the next five-year period.

The slowdown in headline growth is unlikely to trigger a meaningful shift in Beijing’s policy stance in the coming months, said Zhiwei Zhang, president and chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management, as the strong first quarter and resilient exports keep the economy on track for the government’s annual growth target.

Chart via the Investing News Network.

The decline comes after a record-setting run that took gold to an all-time high of US$5,589.38 in January of this year. While a correction from that level was widely expected, experts are divided on what’s next.

Let’s take a look at three potential price scenarios for gold moving forward: bear, neutral and bull.

Bear scenario: Gold price falls to US$3,500

In an interview at the end of April, Gareth Soloway of VerifiedInvesting.com said he thought gold would likely come down to US$4,300, and after that could potentially continue falling.

“The chart’s telling me that we’re likely coming down to this US$4,300 level, maybe a small bounce, then we’ll break down to US$3,900 here,” he said. “Now again, will that be the bottom in gold or not? That’s a good question. I do think that there’s potential for a washout later this year, back to about the US$3,500 level.”

Soloway’s gold price target is based on technical analysis, but Chris Temple of the National Investor has identified a variety of fundamental reasons that could take gold as low as US$3,500. The main one is that he thinks the US Federal Reserve is no longer in a position to cut interest rates in the near term.

“Bottom line, in my view, what causes gold to turn around is when the Fed has to stop pretending that it cares about inflation, that it can do a darn thing about it, and just starts going nuts,” he said.

“That’s when gold gets going again, and we’re a little ways from that.”

Neutral scenario: Gold price trades sideways

Both Soloway and Temple are positive on gold long term, meaning they see higher prices after a deeper correction — in fact, Soloway emphasized that if the metal does fall to US$3,500, he would be buying long-term positions.

The same can be said for the experts who anticipate more sideways movement from gold over the summer — after further consolidation in the summer months they’re calling for higher prices.

In a late May interview, Ronald-Peter Stoeferle of Incrementum and the “In Gold We Trust” report said that at the moment gold lacks immediate catalysts, commenting, “We’re seeing some headwinds, we’re seeing very weak seasonality, we’re already seeing … lots of negative sentiment in the market, especially in the gold and silver miners.”

Stoeferle added, “I wouldn’t expect too much for gold and silver over the next couple of weeks, probably after the…

U.S. growth slowed more than expected near the end of 2025 as the government shutdown impacted spending and investment, while a key inflation metric showed high prices are still a factor for the economy, according to data released Friday.

Gross domestic product rose at an annualized rate of just 1.4%, according to the Commerce Department, well below the Dow Jones estimate for a 2.5% gain.

Consumer spending increased at a slower pace for the period while government spending tumbled sharply in a quarter marked by the record-length shutdown. The department estimated that the shutdown subtracted about 1 percentage point from growth, though it added that the exact impacts “cannot be quantified.”

For the full year in 2025, the U.S. economy grew at a 2.2% pace, down from the 2.8% increase in 2024.

“The Federal government shutdown clearly sent the economy careening off its strong growth path in the fourth quarter which is a one-off that won’t be repeated in early 2026,” said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at Fwdbonds.

Just before the data release, President Donald Trump warned that the GDP number would be soft, blaming it on the government shutdown that ended in November.

“The Democrat Shutdown cost the U.S.A. at least two points in GDP. That’s why they are doing it, in mini form, again. No Shutdowns!” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “Also, LOWER INTEREST RATES. ‘Two Late’ Powell is the WORST!!!”

The latter part of the post was a reference to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, whom Trump has repeatedly criticized for not lowering rates more aggressively.

While growth slowed, inflation held firm in December, according to the gauge most closely watched by Fed officials.

The core personal consumption expenditures price index, which excludes food and energy, rose 3% in December, up 0.2 percentage point from November, according to a separate release. That matched the consensus forecast but kept the pivotal inflation measure well above the Fed’s 2% target.

On a headline basis, the PCE index accelerated 2.9%, or 0.1 percentage point higher than expected.

Both indexes rose 0.4% for the month, compared with the respective forecasts for 0.3%.

On a monthly basis, goods prices climbed 0.4% while services increased 0.3%, indicating that price pressures remained relatively broad-based rather than concentrated in any single category. Fed policymakers have been watching that balance closely to see whether inflation is being spurred by temporary tariff-related pressures that would hit goods, or more fundamental demand-driven factors that would show up in services.

The Fed cut its benchmark rate by three-quarters of a percentage point in late 2025 but has since signaled a more cautious approach as officials assess progress on inflation alongside risks to the labor market.

While Trump blamed the shutdown, the Commerce Department said the deceleration in GDP, which grew at a 4.4% rate in the third quarter, was the result in a pullback in consumer spending and exports, as well…

Japan’s exports growth in the final month of 2025 missed analysts’ estimates, rising 5.1% year on year, as shipments to the U.S. saw a double-digit decline.

Reuters-polled analysts had estimated exports growth would remain unchanged from November at 6.1%.

Japanese exports growth mostly fell during the first of of 2025, hit by tariff worries, but saw a rebound toward the end of the year after a trade deal with the U.S. was announced that saw duties slashed to 15%.

Exports to the U.S. in December fell 11.1%, having jumped 8.8% in the prior month. The gain in November was the first time exports to the U.S. rose since March.

Shipments to mainland China, Japan’s largest trading partner, climbed 5.6%, while exports to Hong Kong surged 31.1% compared to the same period last year.

Imports in December rose 5.1% year on year, jumping sharply from the 1.3% rise seen in November, and beating Reuters estimates of a 3.6% rise.

The trade data comes at a time when Japan is bracing for snap elections on Feb. 8 called by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, with its Lower House set to be dissolved Friday.

A victory for Takaichi will allow her to push her fiscal agenda through Japan’s parliament with little opposition, analysts have said. It could also involve keeping the yen weak, as it supports Japan’s exports-oriented economy.

Since the announcement of the elections, Japanese markets have been fueled by the so-called “Takaichi trade,” that has seen stocks mostly rise, and the yen staying weak.

“[A win] poses the potential for a more expansive fiscal policy after a record draft budget was already approved for the fiscal year starting in April,” Sam Jochim, economist at Swiss private bank EFG, said in a note on Monday.

A strong win for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party could lead to a rally for Japanese equities, but trigger a sell-off in Japanese government bonds and the Japanese yen, he added.
