<p>SK Hynix led a broad rally in Asian technology shares on Wednesday, tracking a rebound in U.S. semiconductor names after a sharp sell-off earlier this week.</p>
<p>Shares of the South Korean memory chipmaker jumped over 11% in Seoul, building on previous session&#8217;s gains. Its rebound comes after the stock suffered its biggest-ever one-day decline on Monday, as investors locked in profits amid growing worries over AI spending.</p>
<p>Domestic rival Samsung Electronics rose 6.8%, while Seoul Semiconductor gained 6.4%. </p>
<p>The rally spread across Japan&#8217;s chip sector. <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/6857.T-JP/">Advantest</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> climbed 4.2%, <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/6920.T-JP/">Lasertec</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> gained 6.4%, <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/6146.T-JP/">Disco</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> rose 2.8%, <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/8035.T-JP/">Tokyo Electron</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> gained 0.9%, while <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-5"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/9984.T-JP/">SoftBank Group</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> advanced 0.8%.</p>

<p>Asian tech gains follow a rebound on Wall Street, where semiconductor shares recovered after the previous session&#8217;s sell-off. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF rose 2.5%, with <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-7"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/MU/">Micron Technology</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> and <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-8"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/LRCX/">Lam Research</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> each climbing about 5%. <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-9"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/AMAT/">Applied Materials</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> and <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-10"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/TER/">Teradyne</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> gained more than 3%.</p>
<p>Despite Wednesday&#8217;s rebound, some investors warned that enthusiasm around AI-linked hardware stocks is becoming stretched. Jordan Cvetanovski, chairman and chief investment officer at Pella Funds, said demand for AI infrastructure remains strong as companies race to build computing capacity, but signs of speculative excess are beginning to emerge. </p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m starting to see some really concerning behavior in markets, he said on CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;<a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/asia-squawk-box/">Squawk Box Asia</a>,&#8221; adding the volatility lately were &#8220;all the classic signs that we are in for a kind of rude shock coming in the AI space.&#8221;</p>
<p>Cvetanovski added that the AI spending boom has continued to overwhelmingly benefit hardware makers as companies race to build computing capacity.</p>
<p>&#8220;A lot of the action will be on the hardware side of things because this will be a race to the finish line. This will be an arms war,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Every company out there will need to get access to as much computers they can,&#8221; adding that &#8220;there will be supply shortages, as we&#8217;ve seen with the memory makers.&#8221;</p>

<div class="group">
<p>One explanation for the lack of notable call-buying is that the surge in single-stock ETFs and leveraged funds with exposure to the South Korean chip sensation stole a big chunk of the speculative limelight in the run-up to SK Hynix&#8217;s U.S. listing and subsequent options.</p>
<p>Almost a dozen ETF issuers filed for leveraged single-stock funds tied to SK, many of which began trading on Tuesday. There&#8217;s also the huge success of the DRAM ETF, now with $23 billion in assets, of which SK Hynix is the third-biggest holding.</p>
<p>&#8220;Those ETFs – double long, double short – that&#8217;s a lot of demand that maybe got taken away but I&#8217;m sure we&#8217;ll see a pickup in volume when they list the weeklies,&#8221; said Scott Bauer, CEO of Chicago-based Prosper Trading Academy.</p>
<p>The two biggest trades in the session looked like a single trader who sold more than 2,200 of the 180-strike calls expiring July 17, nearly at-the-money contracts that brought in $9 a piece for a roughly $2 million sale.</p>
<p>The top seven single trades by volume were all bearish, according to LiveVol.</p>

<p>PrismML, a Khosla Ventures-backed spinout from the California Institute of Technology, publicly released compressed versions of Alibaba&#8217;s open-source Qwen model on Tuesday. The company said it reduced the model from roughly 54 GB to less than 4 GB, allowing all 27 billion of its parameters to run on an iPhone 15 or newer.</p>
<p>PrismML CEO Babak Hassibi told CNBC that Apple and other companies have been evaluating the startup&#8217;s models and measuring their speed, energy efficiency and performance on devices.</p>
<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re really evaluating our technology right now,&#8221; Hassibi said of Apple. </p>
<p>He characterized the discussions as very early and said it remains unclear where they will lead, but that &#8220;things are progressing nicely.&#8221;</p>
<p>Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/khosla-backed-startup-claims-breakthrough-largest-ever-ai-model-iphone" target="_blank">The Information</a> previously reported the PrismML breakthrough.</p>
<p>The release comes one day after Apple opened the public beta of iOS 27, giving iPhone owners their first broad access to the company&#8217;s long-delayed overhaul of Siri. Apple is trying to make Siri more competitive with assistants from <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/OPENAI.FG/">OpenAI</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> and <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-5"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/ANTHR.FG/">Anthropic</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> while keeping more personal information and AI processing on the device.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s approach could address one of the central constraints facing Apple&#8217;s AI strategy. The most capable models typically require too much memory and processing power to run on a smartphone.</p>
<p>Apple can send complex requests to cloud-based models, but running more AI directly on the iPhone would reduce the delay associated with sending data to a remote server, lower cloud-computing costs and support the company&#8217;s privacy pitch. It would also allow certain features to work without an internet connection.</p>

<p>Carolina Milanesi, president and principal analyst at Creative Strategies, said smaller models could let Apple move more demanding features onto the iPhone, including computational photography, video generation and health or fitness tools that rely on sensitive personal data.</p>
<p>&#8220;The more you can do on device, the better it is,&#8221; she said, pointing to health and medication data that users would want to keep private.</p>
<p>PrismML said it shrinks AI models by drastically simplifying how their internal information is stored — reducing each value from 16 bits to just one or three possible values. That significantly cuts the memory required to store and operate the model. </p>
<p>Hassibi compared it to the chip industry&#8217;s move from eight-bit to four-bit computing, but takes it a step further.</p>
<p>The startup said the compressed models use between 10 and 15 times less memory, generate responses six to eight times faster and consume three to six times less&#8230;</p>

<p><span hidden="" aria-hidden="true" class="ArticleBody-extraData"><span hidden="" aria-hidden="true" class="ArticleBody-extraData"><span hidden="" aria-hidden="true" class="xyz-data">Wall Street&#8217;s record-setting start to the week ran into two familiar sources of volatility: the artificial intelligence trade and oil. The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday closed above 53,000 for the first time ever before renewed U.S.-Iran tensions erased those gains, leaving the blue-chip index down 0.5% for the week. Chip stocks — once the hottest corner of the market — also swung sharply as investors continued to question whether the AI trade had become overextended. Even so, the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 1.74% for the week, while the S &#038; P 500 rose 1.23%. Both indexes have finished higher in four of the past five weeks. Here&#8217;s a closer look at what drove the market last week. Chip stocks take investors for a wild ride Semiconductor stocks remained at the center of the market action. The group started the week strong, with the VanEck Semiconductor ETF rising about 2% on Monday as investors bought back into some of the biggest winners from the first half of the year. But the rally quickly faded Tuesday after Samsung&#8217;s results failed to impress investors and Reuters reported that China&#8217;s DeepSeek is developing its own AI chip. Micron , the Idaho-based rival to Samsung, fell 4.7%, while the VanEck Semiconductor ETF dropped almost 4%. The semiconductor trade stabilized Wednesday, helped by Apple&#8217;s announcement that it was expanding its longtime partnership with Broadcom in a multiyear deal expected to exceed $30 billion. Apple has historically tapped Broadcom for connectivity chips that help its devices connect to cellular, WiFi and Bluetooth networks. The new agreement calls for the production of more than 15 billion U.S.-made chips and includes a $1.5 billion expansion of Broadcom&#8217;s manufacturing facility in Fort Collins, Colorado. Broadcom shares climbed nearly 5% on the news Wednesday. It was the second Apple-Broadcom headline of the week. On Monday, Broadcom said in a securities filing that it agreed to supply Apple with &#8220;a range of custom ASIC silicon products for use in multiple generations of Apple products.&#8221; ASIC is short for application-specific integrated circuit — and that jibes with Bloomberg News has reported that Broadcom is working Apple on a specialized AI server chip for its data centers. That would be akin to Broadcom&#8217;s co-design relationship with Google on its in-house tensor processing units (TPUs). Broadcom was our second-best performer last week, up 10%. Amid the volatility, we used Wednesday&#8217;s rebound in AI and semiconductor stocks to exit our remaining position in Arm Holdings , locking in a gain of roughly 69% on shares purchased in April. While we don&#8217;t believe the AI buildout is nearing a peak, the trade has become shakier in recent weeks, and we didn&#8217;t want to risk giving back a fantastic gain in a stock prone to wild swings. We also wanted to reduce the portfolio&#8217;s overlap with the CPU renaissance theme, which our recent purchases of Intel provide. We&#8217;ll continue to follow Arm from the Bullpen and&#8230;</span></span></span></p>

<div class="group">
<p><em>This report is from this week&#8217;s The Tech Download newsletter. Like what you see? You can subscribe </em><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/the-tech-download-newsletter/"><em>here.</em></a></p>
<p>A new addiction is quietly taking hold among teenagers.</p>
<p>They&#8217;re not just doom-scrolling social media anymore. They&#8217;re increasingly locked into conversations with AI chatbots that seem endlessly knowledgeable, supportive and ever-validating. And they&#8217;re struggling to break up with it.</p>
<p>Roughly half of U.S. teens now use chatbots like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Character.AI for schoolwork, information, or just for fun, according to <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2026/02/24/how-teens-use-and-view-ai/" target="_blank">Pew Research Center</a>. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence shows that teens are using chatbots as a substitute for <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.commonsensemedia.org/press-releases/nearly-3-in-4-teens-have-used-ai-companions-new-national-survey-finds#:~:text=Seventy%2Dtwo%20percent%20of%20teens,companions%20instead%20of%20real%20people." target="_blank">real-life friendships and relationships</a> and are showing <a rel="nofollow" href="https://drexel.edu/news/archive/2026/April/teen-AI-chatbot-addiction" target="_blank">patterns related to addiction</a>.  </p>
<p>Does this sound like a painfully familiar story? That&#8217;s because it is. Let&#8217;s zoom out for a second.  </p>
<p>When Australia became the first country to legally enforce a <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/15/australias-social-media-ban-for-teens-how-its-going.html">teen social media ban</a> in December, it became a trial run for the rest of the world. It led to several governments, from the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/15/uk-social-media-ban-under-16s.html">U.K.</a> to<a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/03/spain-teen-social-media-ban-tech-giants-australia.html"> Spain</a>, <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2026/03/25/tracking-europes-approach-to-social-media-bans-for-teenagers.html">France, Greece</a>, and Canada, following suit in the months after. Meanwhile, <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/23/countries-bar-teens-from-social-mediais-the-us-next-its-inevitable-says-expert.html">state-level bans</a> are gaining traction in the U.S.  </p>
<p>However, as a member of the generation that grew up in the throes of social media, I fear we&#8217;re 15 years too late. And as this new, shiny technology in the form of AI and chatbots takes over, experts I&#8217;ve spoken to are calling it déjà vu.  </p>
<p>&#8220;It is right that we use social media as a case study for what we don&#8217;t want to repeat. I mean, it&#8217;s kind of like, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me,&#8221; University College London&#8217;s Associate Professor of Digital Humanities, Kaitlyn Regehr, told CNBC.  </p>
<p>Regehr said governments spent years catching up to social media regulation, only to repeat the same mistake by allowing untested AI products to reach children.</p>
</div>
<h2 class="ArticleBody-subtitle"><a rel="nofollow" id="headline0"/>Are regulations falling short?</h2>
<div class="group">
<p>Earlier this year, companies including <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-10"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/META/">Meta</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>, owner of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, and <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-11"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/GOOGL/">Google</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>&#8216;s YouTube were found <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/25/meta-youtube-los-angeles-california-verdict.html">negligent</a> for failing to adequately warn users about the dangers of using their platforms, with harms ranging from addictive infinite scrolling features to body dysmorphia.  </p>
<p>Yet as the dangers of AI chatbots unravel, there&#8217;s shockingly little to no mention of them in most of the legislation above.  </p>
<p>So far, the U.K.&#8217;s teen social media ban has briefly mentioned restricting under-18s from AI &#8216;romantic companion&#8217; chatbots designed to foster sexual relationships or roleplay with users. The U.S. House recently passed the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/02/a-major-online-safety-bill-for-kids-just-passed-the-housewhat-parents-need-to-know.html">KIDS Act</a> to restrict AI chatbot interactions with children, though it still awaits Senate approval.</p>
<p>Regehr noted that much of the legislation, particularly in the U.K., is still limited and only touches on some of the most extreme harms, while still ignoring how chatbots more broadly can foster emotional and social dependency as well as cognitive de-skilling. </p>

<p>As global chip giant SK Hynix makes its Nasdaq debut Friday, the listing will test whether the stock will be able shed its long-standing &#8220;Korea discount.&#8221; </p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/02/26/south-korea-unveils-measures-to-boost-stock-markets-tackle-korea-discount.html">&#8220;Korea discount&#8221;</a> refers to the tendency of South Korean companies to trade at lower valuations compared to global peers due to concerns over corporate governance and opaque conglomerate structures. </p>
<p>The listing on the Nasdaq via American depositary receipts, or ADRs, is set to grant SK Hynix direct access to the world&#8217;s deepest pool of capital, a move that experts debate could narrow this discount.</p>
<p>LSEG data showed SK Hynix trades at just 4.8 times 12-month forward earnings, compared with the industry median of 29.84 times and U.S. rival <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/MU/">Micron Technology</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>&#8216;s 6.6 times, despite its leadership in the fast-growing high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, market. </p>
<p>&#8220;We see room for that gap to narrow with the ADR listing, though we do not expect the Korea discount to close entirely,&#8221; Rolf Bulk, head of semiconductors and infrastructure at Futurum Group told CNBC.</p>
<p>The divergence in price-to-earnings ratios between Micron and SK Hynix is mainly due to &#8220;access&#8221; and &#8220;familiarity,&#8221; as SK Hynix&#8217;s limited accessibility for U.S. funds has kept its valuation lower for years despite its stronger position in AI memory, said Zavier Wong, market analyst at multi-asset trading platform eToro.</p>
<p>&#8220;Hynix&#8217;s stock going up isn&#8217;t the same as the discount shrinking, so while its price moved up, the gap against Micron didn&#8217;t budge,&#8221; Wong said. </p>
<p>Shares of Micron have surged nearly 250% this year, while SK Hynix has soared 240%, LSEG showed.</p>
<p>Peter Kim, global investment strategist at KB Financial Group, echoed that the listing should also improve access for overseas investors who have historically faced hurdles in buying Korean equities.</p>
<p>&#8220;Additional access could help global investors trade the Hynix stock, which still trades at a discount to the KOSPI, Micron, and Samsung,&#8221; he said. &#8220;A Nasdaq listing would be a major factor in narrowing that discount, as the listing requirements needed to list there would ease some concerns among U.S. investors.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nasdaq listing rules require companies to meet financial and liquidity thresholds, including minimum market value, public float, shareholder count and share-price requirements. Listed companies are also subject to corporate governance standards covering areas such as audit committees, director independence and shareholder voting rights.</p>

<p>&#8220;We know the memory chip business is on fire and if you&#8217;re willing to accept the volatility, I think you could do a lot worse than this one,&#8221; said the &#8220;<a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/mad-money/">Mad Money</a>&#8221; host. &#8220;If you really want it, though, put on a small position and leave room to buy more into weakness.&#8221;</p>
<p>SK Hynix is set to <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/sk-hynix-adr-listing-comes-friday-what-it-means-for-us-memory-stocks.html">begin trading</a> on the Nasdaq on Friday through American depositary receipts, or ADRs, which enable U.S. investors to more easily own shares of companies listed on foreign stock exchanges. The <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/sk-hynix-us-listing-more-than-seven-times-oversubscribed-source-says-2026-07-09/" target="_blank">roughly $26.5 billion offering</a> is expected to rank among the largest ever, following massive deals like <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="NewsShowArticle-QuoteInBody-7"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/CBRS/">Cerebras</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> and <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="NewsShowArticle-QuoteInBody-8"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/SPCX/">SpaceX</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> over the past months.  </p>
<p>SK Hynix&#8217;s South Korea-listed shares have soared roughly 2,550% since ChatGPT launched in November 2022, propelling its market value above $1 trillion. Despite those gains, Cramer said the stock still looks inexpensive, trading at just over seven times this year&#8217;s earnings. </p>
<p>&#8220;Their memory chips may sell at a huge premium, but the stock trades at a discount,&#8221; he said. </p>
<p>Cramer noted the bull case rests on expectations that AI spending will continue driving enormous demand for memory chips. But on the flip side, Cramer said, &#8220;the big concern is that, historically, memory chips have been a boom and bust business, so when supply eventually catches up with demand, you don&#8217;t want to be left holding the bag.&#8221; </p>
<p>Recent trading underscores that volatility. SK Hynix shares have fallen about 25% from their June 25 peak, joining a broader sell-off in memory stocks that has hit fellow Korean tech giant Samsung and Idaho-based Micron despite strong earnings reports. </p>
<p>&#8220;Fortunately, that means you&#8217;re not coming in at the tippy-top for this stock. But this thing&#8217;s a rollercoaster that can go down fast,&#8221; Cramer said. </p>
<p>For investors considering SK Hynix, Cramer said the opportunity ultimately comes down to whether AI has permanently changed the notoriously boom-and-bust memory business. But that&#8217;s difficult to answer in the present. </p>
<p>&#8220;Again, historically, every memory chip boom has led to a memory chip bust.&#8221;</p>

<p><em>Hello, this is Justina Lee writing to you from Singapore. Welcome to another edition of CNBC&#8217;s Daily Open.</em></p>
<p><em>The latest developments from the NATO Summit are signaling strains in the Europe-U.S. relationship, with no new commitments from alliance members over assistance with the Middle East conflict. </em></p>
<p><em>Renewed U.S.-Iran tensions have raised energy </em><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/iran-strait-hormuz-oil-tanker-traffic-gulf-trump.html"><em>concerns</em></a><em>, with oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz slowing down.</em> </p>
<p><em>Looking past geopolitical worries, the tech and financial sectors are taking significant strides. Trillion-dollar South Korean chipmaker </em><span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-2"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/SKHYV/"><em>SK Hynix</em></a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span><em> </em><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/meet-sk-hynix-the-trillion-dollar-chipmaker-debuting-on-us-markets-.html"><em>is set to list</em></a> <em>in the U.S., while </em><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/GS/"><em>Goldman Sachs</em></a><em> has won deals to manage a combined $70 billion in retirement assets for </em><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/VZ/"><em>Verizon Communications</em></a><em> and </em><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/LMT/"><em>Lockheed Martin</em></a><em>.</em></p>
</div>
<h2 class="ArticleBody-subtitle"><a rel="nofollow" id="headline0"/>What you need to know today</h2>
<div class="group">
<p>The NATO Summit became a one-man-show, with the meeting revolving largely around President <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/donald-trump/">Donald Trump</a> — and his disappointment with the alliance members.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve never witnessed such dramatic reversals of fortune, affecting so many global players, compressed into just 48 hours,&#8221; <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/nato-trump-rutte-ukraine-russia-us-iran.html">said</a> CNBC&#8217;s <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/stephen-sedgwick/">Steve Sedgwick</a>. And while U.S.-Iran tensions escalated as the summit was ongoing, <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/donald-trump/">Trump</a> left Turkey on Wednesday without any new commitments from NATO to assist with the conflict. </p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not happy with NATO, because of the fact that they didn&#8217;t want to help us with the No. 1 state sponsor of terror, that&#8217;s Iran,&#8221; Trump <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/08/trump-iran-nato-summit-war-hormuz-strait.html">said</a> during an appearance with NATO chief <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2025/01/23/nato-head-rutte-very-happy-with-trump-threat-of-russia-sanctions.html">Mark Rutte</a>. &#8220;They were unwilling to help us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Renewed tensions in the Middle East, meanwhile, have <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/iran-strait-hormuz-oil-tanker-traffic-gulf-trump.html">raised concerns over energy supplies</a>, with Iran attacking commercial ships. Though signs that <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/trump-iran-war-strikes-hormuz.html">diplomatic efforts</a> were ongoing helped calm oil markets after prices shot up in the aftermath of U.S. strikes on Iran.</p>
<p>Over in the tech space, investors stay glued to the trillion-dollar South Korean chipmaker <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-15"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/SKHYV/">SK Hynix</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>&#8216;s debut in <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/meet-sk-hynix-the-trillion-dollar-chipmaker-debuting-on-us-markets-.html">U.S. markets</a>. The company&#8217;s stock has surged more than sevenfold over the past year, driven by the global memory crunch. </p>
<p>SK Hynix is not the only tech company in the spotlight. Competitor <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-17"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/MU/">Micron</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>&#8216;s shares surged Thursday after it <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/micron-stock-us-chipmaking.html">announced</a> a new round of multi-billion investments aimed at boosting the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. The memory chipmaker, which hit a <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/26/micron-stock-trillion-market-cap.html">$1 trillion market cap</a> for the first time in May, has seen shares skyrocket almost 250% in 2026. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/GS/">Goldman </a>Sachs <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/goldman-sachs-asset-management-deals-verizon-lockheed-martin.html">won</a> deals with <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/VZ/">Verizon Communications</a> and <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/LMT/">Lockheed Martin</a> to manage a combined $70 billion in retirement assets. This is one of the larger recent announcements in the fast-growing market for outsourced corporate investing.</p>

<h2 class="ArticleBody-subtitle"><a rel="nofollow" id="headline1"/>And finally&#8230;</h2>

<p>&#8220;Securing a reliable supply of critical input materials is essential to supporting Micron&#8217;s long-term growth and technology roadmap,&#8221; said Ben Tessone, Micron&#8217;s chief procurement officer, in a press release. </p>

The market debut, coinciding with the company&#8217;s hefty expansion plans for the U.S., comes after a more than sevenfold increase in its stock price over the past year, a rally that&#8217;s lifted SK Hynix&#8217;s market cap to about $1 trillion. </p>
<p>Many Americans don&#8217;t know the name SK Hynix, but they&#8217;ve likely had plenty of exposure to the company&#8217;s products. Along with <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/MU/">Micron</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> and Samsung, SK Hynix is one of three primary makers of computer memory used in laptops and phones sold by companies such as <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/AAPL/">Apple</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> and <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/DELL/">Dell</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>. </p>
<p>Memory has long occupied a sleepy corner of the semiconductor market. That&#8217;s changed dramatically over the last couple years as surging demand for artificial intelligence has upended the industry, creating <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/27/memory-crunch-shaking-apple-and-microsoft-existential-for-small-guys.html">severe shortages</a> for the chips and sending prices to all-time highs. </p>
<p>SK Hynix is the leader in the high-performance memory that&#8217;s used in AI chips from <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6"><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/NVDA/">Nvidia</a><span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>, the world&#8217;s most valuable company. While memory components are typically relatively simple chips, often called RAM, that every computer needs to store data, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) is more complicated, as it stacks many layers of traditional memory together. SK Hynix was the first to do it, and analysts project the company will capture more than half the market this year. </p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/sk-hynix-ai-factory" target="_blank">In June</a>, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang visited SK Hynix on a trip to Seoul, as the two companies announced a multiyear partnership. Nvidia is the biggest HBM buyer.</p>
<p>&#8220;That advantage has positioned SK Hynix as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the rapid growth in AI infra,&#8221; said TrendForce analyst Ellie Wang. </p>

<p>SK Hynix will trade on the Nasdaq under ticker symbol SKHY (initially SKHYV.) The company plans to raise around $29 billion by issuing American depositary receipts (ADRs) in order to fund new factories and equipment, according to a <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/2120882/000119312526295501/d32785df1a.htm" target="_blank">regulatory filing</a>.</p>
<p>Some of that buildout is taking place in the U.S. SK Hynix is constructing its first production facility in the country, scheduled for completion in 2028. The $4 billion plant in West Lafayette, Indiana, will be used for what&#8217;s known as <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/08/tsmc-nvidia-advanced-packaging-intel.html">advanced packaging</a>, an essential part of the process for producing HBM that involves connecting and stacking individual chips into larger systems that can be used in a computer. </p>
<p>SK Hynix expects to receive up to $458 million in funding from the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, passed in 2022 as the centerpiece of a plan to build up the domestic chip industry. The company could also receive up to $570 million of loans from the U.S. Commerce Department.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not just HBM that&#8217;s boosting SK Hynix. The whole memory industry is experiencing soaring prices due to the AI crunch, which means&#8230;</p>
