Is Nike done? That’s the question Jim Cramer posed Friday morning on CNBC after what he called a “very damning” analyst downgrade. “I’ve been trying to figure out whether it is a mistake or whether we can give [CEO Elliott Hill] till October,” Jim said later on Morning Meeting for Club members. October is important because it will mark the second anniversary of Hill assuming the helm at Nike. Since taking over as CEO, Hill has launched a turnaround strategy called “Win Now.” It focuses on getting Nike back to its revered brand status by prioritizing the love of sport, driving innovation, repairing relationships with retail partners, and restructuring leadership. “It’s a very hard business,” Jim acknowledged, but he said he’s inclined to stay with the stock for now. NKE YTD mountain Nike’s year-to-date stock performance. Shares of Nike lost another 3% on Friday, trading in the low $40s, after Piper Sandler downgraded Nike to a hold-equivalent rating from buy and cut its price target to $50 a share from $60. Piper analysts cited concerns about Hill’s leadership appointments, many of whom have worked at Nike for decades. “We worry if the correct execution of the turnaround requires more outside perspective as opposed to NKE veterans,” the analysts wrote. Piper also expressed worries that athleisure was becoming “too saturated,” and that Nike is “still overly dependent” on the success of its classic brands, which include Air Force 1, Air Jordan, and Dunk. On Friday, reports surfaced that Nike’s top innovation executive is leaving the company after less than a year in the role. Effective Sunday, Tony Bignell will be replaced by Andy Caine, a ccording to The Wall Street Journal . Caine has been vice president and creative director for Nike’s sportswear unit. In further proof that Hill’s turnaround is taking and will continue to take longer than expected, Nike on March 31 reported flat revenue in its fiscal 2026 third quarter, with earnings per share down 35% year over year. Guidance for fiscal Q4 was also disappointing. Analysts don’t expect Nike to return to annual sales growth until the February 2027 quarter. In response, the stock experienced a 15% post-earnings slide on April 1 and has only been higher in two sessions since. At the time, several Wall Street firms, including JPMorgan, downgraded Nike stock as they were forced to temper expectations on future earnings. The Club did as well, taking shares down to our hold-equivalent 2 rating . Typically, our 2 rating means we would consider buying more stock on a pullback. Under better circumstances, Friday’s Nike decline could have been an opportunity. Jim said he would have loved “to buy some.” But he conceded, “I don’t have a catalyst.” Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include news of Nike’s innovation leadership shakeup.
Nike caught a downgrade from a Wall Street firm — a move Jim Cramer dismissed as pointless. Needham said Thursday it was “stepping to the sidelines” until it had greater clarity of Nike’s turnaround under new CEO Elliott Hill, downgrading the stock to a hold from buy. The analysts said Hill is doing the right things for the brand long-term, but that the turnaround is “taking longer than expected.” They raised concerns about inventory levels being shipped to North American wholesalers. The analysts also noted the company’s weakness in China, which they described as “highly problematic.” Jim agreed that inventory is a problem, saying the company is still determining a pricing structure to clear excess sneakers and apparel. Clearing excess inventory is “very hard” to accomplish, he acknowledged during Thursday’s Morning Meeting for Club members. Jim cited the past difficulties faced by former Foot Locker CEO Mary Dillon, who struggled with a similar challenge. Eventually, the chain was acquired by Dick’s Sporting Goods . However, Jim’s confidence in Hill’s leadership is unshaken. “Hill is working his butt off,” he said earlier Thursday on ” Squawk on the Street .” Hill knows Nike. He started as an intern and over three decades rose to become Nike’s president of consumer and marketplace before retiring in 2020. He returned in October 2024 as CEO and was tasked with getting the fallen sportswear giant back on track. Hill’s goals include further stabilizing inventory, addressing weak performance in China, and repairing strained wholesaler relationships that suffered under former CEO John Donahoe’s direct-to-consumer strategy. At the heart of Hill’s “Win Now” strategy is product innovation and recentering sports as a focal point in Nike’s stores. NKE mountain 2024-10-14 Nike stock performance since Elliott Hill started as CEO on Oct. 24, 2024 Cramer explained that it’s too late to downgrade the stock at current levels of roughly $64 per share, which is about 21% below its 52-week high. He called the Needham move “fatuous.” As of now, most analysts are bullish on Nike, with 62% maintaining a buy-rating. We have a buy-equivalent 1 rating on the stock and a $75 price target. Cramer said that the stock could hit $100 once Hill sorts out the China business. On Dec. 24, we made our latest Nike buy alongside the disclosure that Nike board member and Apple CEO Tim Cook bought nearly $3 million worth of Nike stock, and fellow Nike director and former Intel CEO Bob Swan picked up about $500,000 worth of stock. Less than a week later, Hill bought an addition $1 million worth of Nike stock. We like it when insiders buy stock because it signals that these people who are close to a company think shares are undervalued. (Jim Cramer’s Charitable Trust is long NKE.
The debt downgrade put immediate pressure on bond prices, sending yields higher on Monday morning. The 30-year U.S. bond yield traded above 5% and the 10-year yield topped 4.5%, hitting key levels at a time when the economy is already showing signs of strain from President Donald Trump’s unfolding tariff policy. Bond prices and yields move inversely.

Treasury bonds influence rates for a wide range of consumer loans like 30-year fixed mortgages, and to some extent also affect products including auto loans and credit cards.

“It’s really hard to avoid the impact on consumers,” said Brian Rehling, head of global fixed income strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute.

Bond yields rose after the late Friday announcement, and mortgage rates loosely follow the yield on the 10-year Treasury.

The average rate on the popular 30-year fixed loan hit 7.04% on Monday, according to Mortgage News Daily. That is the highest level since April 11.

“The average mortgage lender had to account not only for the market movement in Friday’s closing minutes, but also to the additional weakness seen this morning. That makes for a fairly big jump, day-over-day, but it does very little to change the bigger picture,” said Matthew Graham, chief operating officer at Mortgage News Daily.

The April surge in mortgage rates did have a direct effect on the housing market, causing it to pull back right in the heart of the usually busy spring season. Pending sales of existing homes in April, counted by signed contracts, dropped 3.2% compared with April of last year, according to Realtor.com.

Homebuilders also noted a steep drop in demand in April. Homebuilder sentiment is now at the lowest level since the end of 2023, according to the National Association of Home Builders’ monthly index.

There was a bit of a comeback in mortgage demand from homebuyers in the first two weeks of May, according to a weekly index from the Mortgage Bankers Association, but that was when rates were just sitting right around 6.9%. There has been a marked slowdown among buyers recently, whenever the rate goes over that 7% threshold. In addition, any rate increase will knock some people out of even qualifying for a mortgage.

Morgan Stanley’s top stock market strategist said in a note that any stock market decline that’s linked to Moody’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating would likely create a buying scenario for the firm.

Mike Wilson, chief stock market strategist at Morgan Stanley, said in his weekly research note that the temporary reduction of tariffs between the U.S. and China was one item that could lead to a more durable rally. A stock market decline following Moody’s downgrade would present an opportunity to buy the dip.

Wilson said that the equity-return-to-bond-yield correlation is currently close to 0 on a scale of -1 to 1. “In our view, a breakout of the 10-year yield above 4.50% would take this correlation negative, and drive more rate sensitivity for equities,” he said.

“Moody’s late-day downgrade of the U.S. credit rating last Friday is also worth considering in this conversation, though Moody’s is the last ratings agency to downgrade the U.S. credit rating, a process that began 14 years ago in the summer of 2011,” Wilson wrote.
