Apple CEO Tim Cook says he is stepping down after 15 years as chief executive because three key factors aligned: Apple’s current performance, its product roadmap and the readiness of his successor, John Ternus.

Cook said the timing came down to a clear internal assessment of the company’s position and future.

“I looked at three things,” Cook told FOX Business. “I looked at the performance of the company in the first half, and it’s been remarkable. I wanted to announce at a point in time where our roadmap was incredible, and so there would be some great things happening in the future.

“And I wanted to announce at a time that John was ready, and John is ready. And, so, all three of those things intersected, and it felt to me like the right time.”

Apple announced last week that Cook will step down as CEO on Sept. 1 and transition to executive chairman. Ternus, Apple’s head of hardware engineering, will take over as the company’s next chief executive.

Cook is entering the final stretch of his CEO tenure with a record second quarter. Apple revenue jumped 17%, ahead of analyst estimates, while iPhone sales increased 22% from a year earlier. Cook said iPhone sales could have been even stronger if not for supply constraints that limited availability.

The war in Iran is also affecting Apple’s business, Cook said, creating pressure on both revenue and costs.

“It creates both revenue pressure, as you would guess, in the region, and it creates input costs across the world,” Cook said. Oil prices have risen to their highest level in four years amid supply disruptions in the Middle East and concerns around the Strait of Hormuz.

Cook also addressed investor concerns that Apple is perceived to be behind in the artificial intelligence race, as some Silicon Valley competitors spend far more aggressively on AI infrastructure.

“If you look at our year-over-year growth, we’ve really ramped significantly,” Cook said, adding that Apple uses “a hybrid model” that includes “both our own data centers and other people’s data centers.”

Apple said the leadership change follows a long-planned succession process, with Ternus, a 25-year company veteran and current head of Hardware Engineering, stepping into the CEO role as the company navigates its next phase of innovation.

John Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and currently serves as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, where he has overseen work on many of the company’s flagship products across iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple Watch. He became a vice president in 2013 and joined Apple’s executive team in 2021.

During his tenure, Ternus has played a key role in developing new product lines like iPad and AirPods, while also helping drive advancements in Apple’s Mac lineup and its transition to in-house silicon.

“These will be big shoes to fill and the timing of Cook exiting stage left as CEO could make sense but also creates questions,” Ives said. “Apple is making a major transition on its AI strategy and longtime CEO and legendary Cook leaving now is a surprise. We agree with Ternus as the pick.”

CNBC host Jim Cramer reacted to the news on X, writing, “Stunning: Tim Cook stepping down. This is tough news for those of us who have learned so much from him…”

Analysts also weighed in on what comes next for Apple. Reuters reported that Gil Luria, managing director of D.A. Davidson & Co., said the promotion of John Ternus signals the company may focus more heavily on new hardware such as folding phones, smart glasses, virtual reality devices and AI-powered products.

Bob O’Donnell, head of tech consulting firm TECHnalysis Research, said the company’s biggest challenge will…

To anyone who pays close attention to Apple, Monday’s CEO switch-up wasn’t a surprise.

The company’s outgoing chief Tim Cook is approaching retirement age, at 65. He’s helmed Apple for 15 years since co-founder Steve Jobs stepped away due to ill health, and he’s taken the company from a market cap of $350 billion US to about $4 trillion US. And media had been reporting that a handover might be in the works for months.

Meanwhile, incoming head John Ternus — who is currently vice-president of hardware engineering and will step up as CEO on Sept. 1 — has had a bigger role in recent years, often taking the stage at new product launches. Most notably, it was Ternus, not Cook, who unveiled the new MacBook Neo at a live event in New York City last month.

“The amount of time executives get in front of an audience for these product events corresponds to where they are in the hierarchy [at Apple],” said John Gruber, who writes the Daring Fireball blog about all-things Apple. “And, you know, Ternus has appeared more and more over the last five years.”

Ternus, despite not being a household name, has spent the past 25 years at Apple overseeing some key changes for the company. But questions remain about how he’ll govern, especially as Apple navigates big challenges related to AI.

Who is John Ternus?

A veteran of Apple, Ternus has spent most of his career with the tech giant.

He spent a brief period with a company called Virtual Research Systems after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a mechanical engineering degree.

Since joining Apple’s product design team in 2001, Ternus rose to become vice-president of hardware engineering in 2013. He’s overseen the hardware that goes into each iPhone, iPad and Mac — and has been part of introducing new products like AirPods, and the recently debuted sturdy-yet-affordable MacBook Neo.

“John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor,” Cook said of his successor in the company’s announcement, adding he is “without question” the right person to take over.

Gruber says Ternus’s biggest mark on the company is probably shepherding in Apple silicon — the company’s in-house computer chips.

While Apple has used its own chips in its phones and iPads since 2010, Cook announced in 2020 that the company would transition to its own silicon chips in all products, rather than relying on Intel for them. That allows it to make chips that function exactly as it wants for each product, and enables additional features, like better noise cancellation in the second-generation AirPods Pro.

“The whole Apple Silicon movement … John Ternus was directly involved with,” given his role in hardware, Gruber said.

The leadership shakeup marks the first change in the company’s chief executive in 15 years, when Cook replaced Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Ternus will take over as CEO on Sept. 1, leading the company into its next phase of innovation. He will also join the board of directors upon assuming the role.

“I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity to carry Apple’s mission forward,” Ternus said in a statement. “Having spent almost my entire career at Apple, I have been lucky to have worked under Steve Jobs and to have had Tim Cook as my mentor. It has been a privilege to help shape the products and experiences that have changed so much of how we interact with the world and with one another.”

He joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and became vice president of hardware engineering in 2013. Eight years later, he joined the executive team as senior vice president of hardware engineering, where he has overseen work on many of the company’s flagship products across iPhone, Mac, iPad, AirPods and Apple Watch.

Ternus also recently led the team behind the new MacBook Neo and the redesigned iPhone 17 lineup. Apple credits his leadership with driving advancements in AirPods, including active noise cancellation and capabilities that enable them to function as an all-in-one hearing health system, including over-the-counter hearing aid features.

Additionally, he has led efforts focused on durability, materials innovation and sustainability, including the use of recycled aluminum and new manufacturing techniques. Ternus has also played a key role in Apple’s transition to in-house silicon.

In his time running Apple, Tim Cook has been more like the “president of a country, not a company,” according to Deepwater Asset Management’s Gene Munster.

Cook’s predecessor, Steve Jobs, is considered one of the great product innovators in modern American history. But the role has been a very different one since Jobs stepped down in 2011, shortly before he died from cancer, and tapped Cook to take over.

With his run as CEO coming to an end on Sept. 1, Cook’s legacy will be one of tremendous value creation — Apple’s market cap increased from about $350 billion to $4 trillion on his watch — even if the company’s products were more evolutionary than revolutionary during his 15-year run.

That Cook, 65, is handing the reins to longtime hardware boss John Ternus is no great surprise. Multiple news outlets profiled Ternus in recent months, with The New York Times running a story in January headlined, “The Man Who Could Be Apple’s Next C.E.O.”

Still, the move is taking place “about two years earlier than what I was expecting,” Munster told CNBC’s “Closing Bell: Overtime” after the news broke on Monday.

Munster said Cook has cleverly navigated the Trump administration’s tariff policies, which posed a particular threat to Apple because of how much the company counts on China for the manufacturing of its devices.

Far from suffering since Trump’s second White House term began in January 2025, Apple’s stock is up about 20%, and Cook hasn’t been shy at all about cozying up to the president in ways meant to charm the commander in chief.

In August, Cook joined Trump at an event in the Oval Office touting a new $100 billion investment commitment by Apple to American manufacturing, and gifted the president a gold and glass plaque.

“Thank you all, and thank you, President Trump, for putting American innovation and American jobs front and center,” Cook said at the event, which brought Apple’s total planned spend to $600 billion in the U.S. over the next five years.

Investors have been handsomely rewarded for sticking with Cook.

Apple’s stock is close to 20 times higher than it was when he took over, while the S&P 500 is up about sixfold over that stretch. Most company analysts and industry experts attribute Cook’s success to his rigor and financial discipline rather than to product innovation.

“Building on Steve Jobs’ visionary product leadership, Tim will likely be remembered for his operational leadership — transforming and scaling Apple globally, deepening its services platform, strengthening its supply chain, and making the company more operationally resilient and shareholder-focused,” said Rick Wargo, managing partner at executive search and leadership consulting firm Boyden.

Revenue almost quadrupled under Cook, climbing to over $400 billion in the latest fiscal…

From September 1, senior vice president of hardware engineering John Ternus will take over the reins from Cook, while Cook will be appointed Apple’s executive chairman.

Ternus will have huge shoes to fill: under Cook’s watch, Apple has grown more than 20 times in terms of market cap.

Away from the tech world, U.S. markets dipped and Asian markets were mixed as geopolitical tensions continued to simmer. South Korea’s Kospi was a notable outlier, having hit a record high on Tuesday.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, appeared to up the ante in a social media post on Tuesday, criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump for “imposing a siege and violating the ceasefire,” and for seeking to turn the negotiation into “a table of surrender or to justify renewed warmongering.”

Trump, for his part, continues his saber rattling on Iran, threatening Iran with overwhelming military force, saying “lots of bombs [will] start going off” if no deal is reached before a shaky ceasefire with Tehran expires on a revised Wednesday evening deadline.

His rhetoric stands in sharp contrast to news that a U.S. delegation is gearing up to travel back to Pakistan for a potential second round of peace talks. The delegation “plans to travel to Islamabad soon,” a source familiar with the matter told CNBC.

However, some analysts are suggesting the market may have put the Iran conflict behind it, including CNBC’s Jim Cramer.

Oil prices declined Tuesday during Asia hours, with West Texas Intermediate futures for May delivery losing 1.85% to $87.95 per barrel, while international benchmark Brent crude futures for June delivery slid 1.1% to $94.41 per barrel.

Stateside, the Trump administration rolled out a tariff claims-filing portal tied to roughly $160 billion in refunds, after the Supreme Court struck down a cornerstone of Trump’s trade policy.

“Cook will continue in his role as CEO through the summer as he works closely with Ternus on a smooth transition,” Apple said in a press release. The company said in a filing that the board made the appointment on Friday.

It’s the first CEO transition for Apple since Cook, now 65, succeeded Steve Jobs at the helm in 2011, shortly before Jobs’ death. Ternus will become Apple’s eighth CEO.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company,” Cook said in a statement. “I love Apple with all of my being, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of such ingenious, innovative, creative, and deeply caring people who have been unwavering in their dedication to enriching the lives of our customers and creating the best products and services in the world.”

Apple’s market cap increased by more than 20-fold on Cook’s watch, closing on Monday at $4 trillion. Forbes estimates his net worth at close to $3 billion.

However, as Cook exits, Apple faces numerous challenges, including an increasingly complex supply chain, geopolitical tensions, the Trump administration’s tariffs and a memory crunch tied to soaring demand for AI chips.

Ternus, 50, has been Apple’s hardware boss and has worked at Apple for about half his life, joining just four years after he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in mechanical engineering. He’s been widely viewed as next in line, with recent profiles in The New York Times and Bloomberg. His portfolio has included oversight of the hardware engineering teams behind the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Vision Pro.

Ternus came to Apple in 2001 after a four-year stint as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems. At Apple, he worked on the product design team, and in 2013 he became a vice president of hardware engineering.

Nike director Tim Cook and CEO Elliott Hill coughed up about $1 million each in another round of insider stock buying. The market and Jim Cramer applauded the moves. Cook, also the longtime CEO of Apple , bought 25,000 shares of Nike at an average price of $42.43 each last Friday. Hill bought just over 23,660 Nike shares at $42.27 on Monday. The purchases were revealed in separate regulatory filings after Tuesday’s closing bell. Nike shares shot up 3% on the news Wednesday, adding to a 3% gain in the prior session during a strong overall market rally. These new buys are signs that Hill’s plan to turn around Nike, which is nearly 18 months in the making, is “very real and working,” Jim said on ” Squawk on the Street .” Insider purchases are generally viewed as a bullish sign. Back in December, Cook bought 50,000 shares of Nike, and Hill bought nearly 16,400 when the stock was around $60. We bought alongside the insiders for the Club after a post-earnings slump. But it doesn’t always pay off to follow the sign, as the Club has learned the hard way. We are not buying any more Nike shares this time around. With the stock lower since December and down roughly 28% year to date, we want to see Hill’s turnaround efforts show up in the numbers. The Club has a hold-equivalent 2 rating on Nike. NKE YTD mountain Nike YTD Jim has been frustrated with the slower-than-anticipated timing of Nike’s comeback and recently debated what to do with the position. Ultimately, he said he would give Hill until October, which will be two years since he became Nike CEO, with a mandate to fix the missteps of his predecessor and get the iconic brand back to its former glory. “I think that Elliott can do it. I really do. Tim Cook wouldn’t be buying otherwise,” Jim said, noting that he would like to see Nike CFO Matthew Friend make a purchase. Since Nike’s latest earnings report in March, some analysts are no longer as bullish on the sportswear and sneaker giant. The Street is still pretty evenly split on buy and hold ratings, with about 5% sell, according to market data provider FactSet. On Monday, HSBC downgraded Nike to a hold equivalent rating. “Nike’s turnaround thesis has gone from ‘not if, but when’ to a ‘show me’ story with no short-term catalysts, in our view.” Last week, the stock also got hit with what Jim called a ” damning” downgrade by Piper Sandler, whose analysts cited concerns about Hill’s leadership appointments and oversaturation of athleisure wear. Jefferies, however, is still bullish on the stock. “We continue to believe the company is taking the right approach of fixing one geo [geographical region] and one product category at a time,” analyst Randy Konik told CNBC on Wednesday. Jefferies has a buy rating on the stock. (Jim Cramer’s Charitable Trust is long NKE. See here for a full list of the stocks.)
In a high-stakes balancing act, Apple CEO Tim Cook is rejecting political labels while aggressively aligning his company with the Trump administration’s “America First” economic agenda.

Highlighting a massive $600 billion investment in U.S. operations, Cook defended his proximity to the White House as a necessary pursuit of pro-growth policy — even as he faces a firestorm from the left over his attendance at the “Melania” documentary screening.

“You were at the inauguration last year, just feet from the president. You gave him a nice gift at the White House. You were at the screening of ‘Melania,’ the documentary for the First Lady. There’s so many people [who] say you’re really close to the administration, and you’re being criticized for that,” “Good Morning America” co-host Michael Strahan told Cook during an interview discussing Apple’s 50th anniversary.

“Well, what I do is I interact on policy, not politics,” Cook responded.

NEW EMOJIS COMING TO APPLE IPHONE IN LATEST UPDATE

“I’m not a political person on either side. I’m not political. And so I’m kind of straight down the middle, and I focus on policy,” the CEO continued. “And so, I’m very pleased that the president and the administration is accessible to talk about policy.”

Apple has openly been collaborating with President Donald Trump to reshore critical supply chains and move away from overseas reliance, aiming to secure a made-in-America future that hedges against global trade volatility. Cook further discussed the leading tech company’s $600 billion commitment to the domestic economy over the next four years.

“If you looked at your iPhone today, the front cover and the back cover, all of that glass will be coming out of Kentucky by the end of this year. The engine, the system on a chip, we’re gonna make over 100 million of those in Arizona this year,” Cook said.

“We’re going to make over 20 billion semiconductors in the U.S. And again, this is not only for the U.S. market-sold iPhones, it’s for worldwide iPhones,” he added. “We’ve invested more in the U.S. Absolutely. We’re a very proud American company and want to do as much here as we possibly can.”

Asked about reports that he was preparing to step aside, Cook told ABC, “No, I didn’t say that. I haven’t said that. I love what I do deeply. Twenty-eight years ago, I walked into Apple, and I’ve loved every day of it since.”

He added that he “can’t imagine life without Apple.”

The comments come after a turbulent stretch for Apple’s C-suite.

In December, the company lost AI chief John Giannandrea, its top lawyer and a key design executive in a single week — while chip guru Johny Srouji reportedly signaled he might leave, too.

The departures raised pointed questions about whether Cook’s operational leadership style is the right fit for the artificial intelligence era.

Cook’s reassurance comes at a pivotal moment, as Apple turns 50 on April 1.

The company is expected to launch its first foldable iPhone and AI glasses this year, and it still needs to prove it can deliver the revamped Siri experience it failed to ship in 2025.

LightShed Partners analyst Walter Piecyk was among the most vocal critics, warning in December that Apple risks ceding its AI future to Google.

“You’re basically surrendering AI to Google, just like you surrendered search to Google,” Piecyk told CNBC in December, arguing that the dependence could ultimately help Android gain share from the iPhone, since that’s where more of the development and integration would happen.

Apple failed to deliver its promised overhaul of Siri last year and has since struck a deal with Google to use Gemini to power AI features on the iPhone — the very arrangement critics say could deepen Apple’s reliance on a direct competitor.

Piecyk called 2026 the ideal moment for Cook to hand off the baton, with Apple shares near all-time highs and a favorable upgrade cycle taking shape as consumers hang on to older phones and carriers push fresh subsidies. In Piecyk’s view, it would allow Cook to leave on a high note and pass the AI transition to a successor he has already helped prepare.

But Cook projected no urgency around any transition on Tuesday.

Cook called AI technology “profound,” and defended Apple’s privacy-first approach.

On tariffs — Apple has paid $3.3 billion under President Trump’s trade policies — Cook was noncommittal about pursuing legal action, saying only that the company is “monitoring the situation” and that they’d “decide accordingly.”
