<p>A shovel-ready, $400-million facility proposed for Edmonton that would convert landfill waste into electricity could be cancelled after a recent carbon tax agreement between the Alberta and federal governments.</p>
<p>The national industrial carbon price was supposed to rise to $170 a tonne by 2030, but <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-smith-energy-announcement-mou-9.7200652" target="_blank">a revised deal last month</a> by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith means the price would instead reach $130 a tonne by 2040.</p>
<p>For Varme Energy, the policy change is putting its proposed waste-to-energy project on life support. The facility would capture greenhouse gases and store them underground. The project would also generate carbon credits that could be sold. However, a lower carbon price means those credits would be worth less.</p>
<p>Without further government policy changes over the next few months, Varme Energy chief executive Sean Collins warns the company may have to pull the plug on the project.</p>
<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, nobody has runway forever,&#8221; said Collins. He now describes the company as facing a &#8220;very challenging&#8221; financial situation.</p>
<p>Carney and Smith signed the deal as <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/bakx-smith-ceraweek-foreign-investment-pipeline-9.7139057" target="_blank">part of a broader agreement</a> between the governments to reduce methane emissions, expedite the regulatory process for major projects in the province and pursue a new oil export pipeline to the West Coast.</p>
<p>Some large industrial companies had <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/capp-conference-9.7164414" target="_blank">pushed for a lower carbon price</a> to avoid higher costs and remain competitive compared with counterparts in the United States, which do not have to pay a carbon tax.</p>
<p>In Alberta, a carbon price that rises more slowly and does not climb as high will result in less investment in emissions reductions, said Ross Linden-Fraser, a researcher with the Canadian Climate Institute.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just the reality of what happens when you set a lower value on one of the main sources of revenue for emissions-reducing projects,&#8221; he said.</p>

<h2>Lower target price</h2>
<p>Varme Energy already has agreements in place with the City of Edmonton&#8217;s landfill, as well as provincial permits to produce electricity. The proposed project has received funding from the Alberta government and support from the federal government&#8217;s Canada Growth Fund to ensure the carbon credits are sold for at least $85 a tonne. </p>
<p>Still, the project has an expected operating cost of about $118 a tonne, said Collins. That would have made financial sense under the federal government&#8217;s previous plan to raise the price to $170 a tonne by 2030.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re calling a mayday to Ottawa and we hope they listen,&#8221; said Collins. He said the federal government&#8217;s message should be: &#8220;Ottawa: We have a revenue problem. And the solution to a revenue problem is revenue.&#8221;</p>
<p>Varme Energy is a subsidiary of a Norwegian-based <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/varme-energy-from-waste-alberta-1.6622299" target="_blank">clean energy company</a> that has developed similar projects to divert waste from landfills. <p>Leaders in Canada&#8217;s oil and gas sector say the industrial carbon levy would erode the country&#8217;s competitive edge at a time when the world is clamouring for a reliable energy supply.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re still talking about an industrial carbon tax when no other producing and exporting nation does that to their producers,&#8221; Lisa Baiton, head of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, said in an interview as the 2026 BMO CAPP Energy Symposium kicked off in Toronto on Tuesday.</p>
<p>Baiton said the war embroiling much of the Middle East has &#8220;put an exclamation point&#8221; on an argument CAPP has been making since Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine in 2022: Canada is blessed with one of the biggest oil and gas reserves on the planet and has not only the opportunity, but the responsibility, to develop them and bolster global energy security.</p>
<p>&#8220;And yet we seem to be sometimes focusing on the wrong things,&#8221; Baiton said. </p>
<p>&#8220;Instead of seizing the moment and taking the mantle of that responsibility, we are focusing on things that add cost and make us less competitive.&#8221;</p>
<p>The conference is being held amid a push in Canada to more quickly build oil and gas export infrastructure to serve markets beyond what has traditionally been this country&#8217;s biggest customer, the United States.</p>
<h2>The pipeline push </h2>
<p>The Alberta government plans to file an application for a new West Coast crude oil pipeline this summer to the federal major projects office, which aims to speed along infrastructure deemed in the national interest.</p>
<p>The Alberta and federal governments signed a sweeping memorandum of understanding late last year on a host of energy matters, including a path toward building a new B.C. pipeline in tandem with an industrial carbon price that would support the economics of the massive <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/pathways-alliance-mou-kendall-dilling-martha-hall-findlay-9.6996848" target="_blank">Pathways carbon capture proposal</a>.</p>
<p>Agreements on the nitty gritty of the carbon price and Pathways pieces remain unresolved two weeks past the April 1 deadline set out in the energy accord.</p>
<p>Under the MOU, Alberta&#8217;s industrial carbon price is to eventually reach $130 per tonne from $95. Premier Danielle Smith said late last month that talks were still ongoing around how quickly that price will rise.</p>
<p>A recent analysis from Clean Prosperity, a climate policy non-profit, suggested oilsands producers should be able to easily recoup the added carbon costs because their product would be able to sell for far more if a new pipeline enabled more exports to Asia. </p>
<p>It found net profits at four oilsands facilities it studied would increase by more than $3 billion in the 15 years following the opening of a new pipeline.</p>
<p>A separate analysis from the Canadian Climate Institute pegged the per-barrel hit from the increased carbon price at an average of 50 cents — about the cost of a Timbit.</p>

<p>They increased their purchases from 14,200 credits for permanent carbon removal in 2022 to 11.92 million in 2023, based on available market data from a carbon credit management platform, Ceezer, which also analyzed information from carbon market data insights providers Allied Offset and Cdr.fyi. They rose 104% year-on-year in 2024 to 24.4 million and 181% to 68.4 million in 2025, per Ceezer.</p>

<p>Ceezer&#8217;s data focuses on carbon removals considered permanent, while Microsoft&#8217;s purchases cover a range of time-limited carbon removals, defined as high, medium, and low durability, with the latter involving techniques that sequester carbon for less than 100 years, such as soil or forestry.</p>
<p>Amazon declined to comment on its carbon credit strategy, while Meta and Google did not respond to requests for comment.</p>

<p>Of the four Big Tech companies, only Microsoft has consistently reported annual purchases that stretch back before 2022. Credits are also bought in batches delivered over a multi-year period, which could skew the numbers.</p>
<p>In addition, there is no obligation to report them. Some purchases may not have been reported due to potential reputational risk — early carbon credits were controversial for not representing genuine emissions reductions, Ceezer CEO Magnus Drewelies told CNBC.</p>
<p>Due to a tight clean energy supply to support the AI buildout, achieving net zero is &#8220;impossible&#8221; for Big Tech without carbon removal, Drewelies said.</p>
<p>Technological carbon removal includes various techniques such as direct air capture, where machines are used to suck carbon dioxide from the air, and processes that speed up nature&#8217;s ability to capture and store carbon.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.ferro-alloy.com/" target="_blank"><strong>Ferro-Alloy Resources Limited (LSE:FAR)</strong></a>, the vanadium producer and developer of the large Balasausqandiq vanadium deposit in Southern Kazakhstan, is pleased to announce that it has entered into a non-binding, non-exclusive, memorandum of understanding (&#8220;MOU&#8221;) for the supply of up to 360,000 tonnes of carbon black substitute (&#8220;CBS&#8221;) per year, to Qingdao Master Tyre Co., Ltd (&#8220;Master Tyre&#8221;).</p>
<p>The MOU will be for the supply of the new CBS product (&#8220;New CBS&#8221;) which will be produced from high-carbon / low vanadium waste rock (as announced on 27 June 2025).</p>
<p>Testing and development of the New CBS product is considered to be a priority project for Master Tyre over the next three years, as part of its 2036 strategy.</p>
<p><strong><span>Commenting, Nick Bridgen, CEO of Ferro-Alloy Resources, said:</span></strong></p>
<p><em><em>&#8220;Master Tyre&#8217;s innovative approach to tyre manufacturing and R&#038;D capability will maximise the environmental and cost benefits of using our latest CBS product and will develop significant technical knowledge in optimising its use in rubber manufacturing.</em></em></p>
<p><em><em>This New CBS product was not included in our recently announced <a rel="nofollow" href="https://investingnews.com/daily/resource-investing/prefeasibility-feasibility-studies/">feasibility study</a>, which only envisaged our original CBS product made from the tailings of the vanadium production process. The net cash flows from this New CBS product are additional to the already strong financial characteristics of the Balasausqandiq project.&#8221;</em></em></p>
<p><strong><span>MOU summary</span></strong></p>
<ul class="ee-ul">
<li>The Company has entered into a non-binding, non-exclusive, MOU for the supply of New CBS to Master Tyre.</li>
<li>Master Tyre plans to use the New CBS for its own production and for sale to other tyre and rubber manufacturers in the People&#8217;s Republic of China (&#8220;China&#8221;).</li>

<p>Exxon aims to capture 90% of the carbon dioxide emissions emitted by natural gas plants that power data centers, Woods said. The oil major is talking with power companies to decarbonize their plants, he said.</p>
<p> &#8220;We&#8217;re pretty advanced in the conversations,&#8221; the CEO said.</p>
<p>The tech sector has mostly secured renewable energy to offset the emissions from their data centers, though they are now making major investments in nuclear power as well.</p>
<p>Some companies are turning to <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/11/microsoft-is-open-to-using-natural-gas-to-power-ai-data-centers-ameet-ballooning-demand.html">natural gas</a> as well as they search for reliable power. <p>The Trump administration is seeking to repeal a landmark finding that greenhouse gas emissions pose a threat to public health, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday.</p>
<p>&#8220;This has been referred to as basically driving a dagger into the heart of the climate change religion,&#8221; EPA administrator Lee Zeldin told the conservative &#8220;<a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gReirNB2rwA" target="_blank">Ruthless Podcast</a>.&#8221; &#8220;Repealing it will be the largest deregulatory action in the history of America,&#8221; Zeldin said</p>
<p>The EPA under the Obama administration issued an <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.epa.gov/climate-change/endangerment-and-cause-or-contribute-findings-greenhouse-gases-under-section-202a" target="_blank">endangerment finding</a> in 2009 that carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases &#8220;threaten the public health and welfare of current and future generations.&#8221;</p>
<p>The finding is the basis for Clean Air Act regulations aimed at combating climate change by limiting vehicle and power plant emissions.</p>
<p>The EPA will seek to repeal all greenhouse gas emissions standards on light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles that followed the endangerment finding, Zeldin said later Tuesday at a car dealership in Indianapolis, Indiana.</p>
<p>The EPA action is part of President Donald Trump&#8217;s broader effort to expand oil, natural gas and coal production while limiting the expansion of renewable energy and electric vehicles.</p>
<p>Trump abandoned U.S. commitments to fight climate change on his first day in office, issuing an order to withdraw the U.S. from the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement" target="_blank">Paris Agreement</a>.</p>

<p>The company&#8217;s story starts in 2003, <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.thestreet.com/technology/history-of-tesla-15088992" target="_blank">when it was founded</a> by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Elon Musk invested in the company in 2004, becoming the largest shareholder, and eventually became its CEO in 2008. A well-known story for battery metals investors, the company made headlines in 2014 when it broke ground at its first gigafactory in Nevada, US, an unthinkable proposition at the time. Outside of the US, Tesla also has gigafactories in China and Germany.</p>
<p>In partnership with <a rel="nofollow" href="https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/quote/6752.T" target="_blank">Panasonic (TSE:6752)</a>, at its Nevada gigafactory Tesla produces batteries with nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) cathodes — different from most of Tesla’s competitors, which use a nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) mix. </p>
<p>Tesla announced in 2021 that it was changing the battery chemistry for its standard-range vehicles to lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cathodes, which are cobalt- and nickel-free. China’s largest battery maker, <a rel="nofollow" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/300750.SZ" target="_blank">CATL (SZSE:300750)</a>, is a key supplier of LFP batteries for Tesla, particularly for the Shanghai and Berlin gigafactories.</p>
<p> South Korea&#8217;s <a rel="nofollow" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/373220.KS/" target="_blank">LG Energy Solution (KRX:373220)</a> is working on supplying Tesla with batteries using nickel-manganese-cobalt-aluminum (NMCA) cathodes.</p>
<p>Tesla&#8217;s prime EV position has <a rel="nofollow" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-stock-falls-amid-investor-concerns-over-trump-tariffs-elon-musks-government-ties-153304566.html" target="_blank">taken a hit</a> in the first quarter of 2025 as Elon Musk&#8217;s political activities in the United States have generated a lot of negative publicity for the brand. However, the company is still the largest EV maker by market cap globally.</p>

<p>BYD has a vertically integrated supply chain, from mineral battery cells to battery packs.</p>
<p>In the fourth quarter of 2023, BYD <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-02/tesla-falls-behind-byd-in-quarterly-ev-sales-as-growth-slows" target="_blank">passed Tesla</a> in terms of global EV sales, selling 526,409 EVs compared to Tesla&#8217;s 484,507 units sold during that quarter.</p>
<p>Backed by <a rel="nofollow" href="https://investingnews.com/daily/resource-investing/precious-metals-investing/gold-investing/warren-buffett-gold/">Warren Buffett</a>, in 2020 BYD officially launched its Blade battery, a less bulky LFP battery. The following year, the company announced that it would <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.byd.com/news/byd-announces-all-its-pure-evs-will-now-come-with-blade-batteries/" target="_blank">use the Blade LFP batteries</a> for all of its pure electric models. </p>
<p>The company is working on using sodium-ion batteries — this battery type is expected to be seen in 9 percent of global EV sales by 2033, according to a <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.fastmarkets.com/insights/global-electric-vehicle-supply-chains-struggle-as-demand-surges/" target="_blank">2023 forecast from Fastmarkets</a>. </p>
<p>In April 2025, BYD <a rel="nofollow" href="https://electrek.co/2025/04/09/byd-launches-first-evs-with-ultra-fast-charging-starting-at-30000/" target="_blank">released two new EV models</a>, the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, based on its new Super e-platform, which allows users to add 400 kilometers (248 miles) of range in five minutes of charging, and charge to 100 percent in 20 minutes.</p>

<p>Can we start turning plastic waste into batteries for a clean future?</p>
<p>A new project from the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW), is hoping to turn previously non-recyclable plastic waste, into a valuable carbon source for battery production.</p>
<p>The CarbonCycle project, backed by €1 million from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), is testing a high-temperature rotary kiln thermolysis process that converts plastic residues into solid carbon and hydrogen-rich gas.</p>
<p>This innovative method aims to repurpose plastic waste from industry into high-purity carbon suitable for battery electrodes, particularly as graphite demand for electric vehicles surges.</p>
<p>“Our aim in this project is to demonstrate that the recovery of carbon from existing industrial plastic residues is technically feasible and economically viable,” said Dr Jochen Brellochs, research scientist at ZSW. “We see this as a key contribution to achieving an EU-wide circular economy.”</p>
<p>Unlike conventional plastic pyrolysis, which focuses on oil production, CarbonCycle targets solid carbon and hydrogen.</p>
<p>The hydrogenated gas could serve as a low-carbon industrial fuel, similar to turquoise hydrogen, but with lower energy requirements and no reliance on fossil gas.</p>
<p>Initial lab trials at ZSW will be followed by a pilot-scale system processing 5kg of plastic per hour.</p>
<p>The recovered carbon will be tested for battery applications, with a full process chain from waste to battery half-cell being developed.</p>
<p>The project represents a significant step towards decarbonising battery supply chains and reducing dependence on imported fossil carbon.</p>

<p>That is the hope of Stigg Arff who used his own cash from selling a fintech business to set up the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.ctrfoundation.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Carbon Technology Research Foundation</a>. Its goal is to find solutions from nature and engineer them to help remove our extra emissions.</p>
<p>For a money man I asked why he was attracted to climate science?</p>
<p>Stig told me: “I’ve been driven by climate change ever since my studies, so I’m actually blessed. My first degree was as a physicist. And there’s been a lot of things going on in this area of science and new technologies. And I thought in a way this was perfect timing, because everything that’s going on in the biotech sector really enthused me, it really inspired and motivated me that that is probably where the solution lies in terms of the net zero transition and the idea was to finance research.”</p>
<p>Biotechnology has been a bit of a buzz word but what is it?</p>
<p>“I would say it’s tinkering with nature, basically. I mean, you know, tinkering with how life is programmed so you can change a bit of the programme and thus change the properties of that programme. And that is what we’re trying to do.</p>
<p>“We’re trying to take properties from life, which is is very apt in terms of carbon sequestering. And then reproducing that property in other organisms. Why would we want to do that. Because in order to capture enough carbon you need huge biomass basically.</p>

<p><strong>“Currently we’re emitting 35 gigatons of carbon every year. The nature or the biosphere in which we live has a turnover of 350 gigatons. That’s ten times the amount that we’re releasing. So, you know, it’s really a simple back of the envelope calculation. If you can improve the turnover by 10%, you’ve solved the problem!”</strong></p>

<p>A breakthrough carbon capture technology from the University of Surrey could give the UK a competitive edge in producing clean fuel from air.</p>
<p>The system, called Dual-Function Material (DFM), captures carbon dioxide (CO₂) and converts it into synthetic fuel—potentially at a fraction of current industry costs.</p>
<p>Research published in <em>Applied Energy</em> found the method could remove CO₂ at around $740 (£560) per tonne, with future improvements bringing it below $400 (£303).</p>
<p>This would put it on par with or ahead of existing commercial carbon capture technologies.</p>
<p>“For the first time, we’ve been able to demonstrate it can be financially competitive to use DFMs for direct air capture,” said Dr Michael Short, lead author and associate professor at Surrey. “Using green hydrogen from renewable electricity and carbon from the atmosphere, our system can help to replace fossil feedstocks in sectors like steel manufacturing.”</p>
<p>The team tested different system designs to find the most cost-effective setup for capturing 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year—on a scale comparable to other commercial systems.</p>
<p>The technology could be integrated with existing industry infrastructure, making large-scale deployment more feasible.</p>
<p>Surrey’s innovation could play a key role in cutting emissions while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.</p>
