Retailer Revolve announced on Monday a partnership with design icon Donatella Versace to create a new beauty and fashion business aimed at young consumers, according to a press release.

Versace, 71, will serve as the new venture’s chief creative officer, bringing expertise from her nearly 30 years spent leading the luxury fashion house, also named Versace. She stepped down as creative director of Versace in March 2025.

“I have always been inspired by the next generation, in music, film, art and, of course, fashion,” Donatella Versace said in the press release. “This partnership gives me the freedom to speak to that generation in a completely new and personal way, through beauty and fashion.”

Though the name and date of launch of the new business have not been announced, more details are expected in the coming months.

“By combining Donatella’s creative authority with REVOLVE’s technology, infrastructure and global reach, we have an opportunity to create something genuinely distinctive — and build it for the long term,” Mike Karanikolas, co-founder and co-CEO of Revolve Group, said in the release.

The venture is Revolve’s latest celebrity partnership after rapper Cardi B launched a campaign in April 2025 and social media influencer Sofia Richie Grainge created her own fashion brand called “SRG” with Revolve last October.

Revolve reported its third consecutive quarter of double-digit net sales growth this August, with net sales of $347 million, up 12% year over year. The fashion brand has been trying to emphasize a digital-first strategy and in-person activations to capture young shoppers.

Ross Stores just called out increased activity across all income cohorts. TJX told us how incredible the inventory selection is. This booming business at off-price retailers is further evidence that shoppers are feeling increasingly strained. Investors need to pay attention, even if these companies aren’t in their portfolios, because consumer spending drives two-thirds of the American economy. Their buying behavior has implications for the Federal Reserve’s next move — and that matters to the whole market. After Thursday’s close, Ross Stores reported quarterly sales and earnings above expectations, with same-store sales surging 17%. CEO James Conroy said on the post-earnings call: “Comp increase was primarily driven by a growth in transactions, and we saw healthy increases in customer count on a comp store basis across income levels, ethnicities, and all age groups, including the young customer.” It’s no wonder the stock jumped more than 5.5% on Friday, pushing back toward record highs. For the week, the stock is up over 9%. Same story at TJX, our Club holding behind T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods. On Wednesday’s call, CFO John Klinger said that first-quarter comp growth of 6% was “driven equally by a higher average basket and an increase in customer transactions. … Across all geographies, income, demographic bands, we’re very pleased with what we saw.” Shares surged on earnings day and are up more than 6% for the week. While shoppers seek out similar value at Walmart — and its earnings Thursday morning showed some of that — it was the retail giant’s warning about high gas prices that got all the attention because it dinged the company’s outlook. On the Walmart call, CFO John David Rainey said, “We have a large fuel business, and we see that in the most recent period, the number of gallons that customers fill up with when they come to our fuel stations fell below 10 for the first time since 2022. That’s an indication of stress.” He did try to blunt some of that worry, saying that “while there are certainly pressures on the consumer, let me reiterate: our business is strong.” Between what TJX and Ross are saying, coupled with Walmart’s challenges, it’s safe to say the consumer is getting more frugal. We got more evidence on Friday: The latest consumer sentiment survey hit a new record low. Next week, we’ll be looking at the last of the three major off-price retailers, Burlington . We already know the lower-income cohort was being stressed; the question is, is that upper part of the “K-shaped” economy we find ourselves starting to feel it now as well? On Thursday night, Deckers Outdoor , the parent company behind the Hoka running shoe and Ugg boot brands, indicated the consumer looked OK from their point of view. These are certainly more premium brands, so keep that in mind. “Consumers, even with everything going on, are still operating from a healthy position,” CFO Steven Fasching said on Deckers’ fiscal fourth-quarter call. “I…

The July container volumes for the Port of Los Angeles tell the tale of the Trump tariff impacts.

The front-loading of Chinese goods ahead of the tariff deadline pushed container volumes at the Port of Los Angeles to levels it has never seen in its 117-year history. The port processed 1,019,837 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, in July. Imports came in at 543,728,000 TEUs, also a record.

“Shippers have been frontloading their cargo for months to get ahead of tariffs and recent activity at America’s top port really tells that story,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “Port terminals in July were jam-packed with ships loaded with cargo — processed without any delay, much to the credit of our dedicated longshore workers, terminal and rail operators, truckers and supply chain partners.”

But the level of tariffs, at a minimum of 30%, didn’t allow companies to import in full orders, according to Mike Short, president of global forwarding at C.H. Robinson.

“This year’s peak season started about two to three months earlier than normal,” said Short. “We started to see it slow down a month or two before it would normally end, which just started.”

He added: “We have been in peak season for at least three to four months at this point. It’s not as strong as we would normally see.”

The Trump administration announced its initial tariffs on April 2, but then extended deadlines to allow time for further negotiations, first to July 9 and then to Aug. 1. Another reprieve for high tariffs on Chinese goods was granted on Monday, and will expire in mid-November.

According to Short, retail is the No. 1 area experiencing a pullback. Lower-cost items are another area, while the sectors that have continued to be healthier were the higher-value tech and health-care items, Short said.

Trucking and rail companies make their money moving the containers. Less volume means less projected revenue.

In an advisory note to clients, HLS Group wrote, the average spot freight rates from Shanghai to the U.S. have dropped almost 60% from the peak in early June.

“However, the dramatic spot rate decline has slowed in August due to stronger capacity management by carriers, although it seems limited and not enough to stop the downward market. September might be the busiest time for the rest of the year, with increasing demand for the holiday season, which will push up spot rates,” said the advisory.

Alan Baer, CEO of OL USA, told CNBC the lack of any real peak season provides clear insight into the overall impact of tariffs.

“Ocean spot rates follow volume, up or down, and volume follows consumer behavior coupled with risk-averse behavior by importers,” said Baer. “Small- to medium-sized importers are being hurt as tariff levels remove some, if not all, of their gross margins.”
