The cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to lettuce at some Taco Bell locations may not have a significant long-term impact on the chain and other restaurant companies, according to analysts.

The outbreak has currently affected more than 1,600 people across five states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The infection resembles a serious stomach bug and often begins showing up two to three weeks after people become infected by the parasite, according to the CDC. No deaths have been reported.

On Thursday, the agency said its investigation into the source linked the outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is working with the supplier to determine if the lettuce was sent elsewhere, as well.

Taco Bell’s parent company, Yum Brands, saw its stock sink nearly 7% over the past five days as the company grappled with the health scare. Other food companies that sell fresh lettuce also saw their shares drop, like salad chain Sweetgreen, which plunged nearly 13% this week, and fast casual chain Cava, which sank more than 3%. Shares of Sweetgreen and Cava rose more than 17% and about 2% on Friday, respectively, due to apparent relief that the CDC did not identify their ingredients as potential sources of cyclosporiasis.

While Taco Bell or other restaurant chains may take a temporary sales hit as headlines about the outbreak swirl, particularly in the states most affected by it, analysts said any dips in revenue or stock prices likely will not be prolonged. Even so, it remains to be seen whether the CDC identifies any other restaurant chains as possible sources of the outbreak.

According to reports, the affected lettuce at Taco Bell may be traced back to supplier Taylor Farms, which distributes the product to many restaurant chains and sells directly in most grocery stores. Other media reports noted the company was preparing to issue a recall of ingredients on Friday.

Taylor Farms, the same company linked to the McDonald’s E. Coli outbreak in 2024, said in a Friday statement that it has removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico. The company added that none of its branded salads or kits are associated with the outbreak.

“While the FDA traceback is indicating a specific independent farm, which represents less than 1% of the U.S.’s iceberg lettuce supply, as the potential source of the outbreak, we have removed all iceberg lettuce from the region indefinitely,” the company said.

Taco Bell said in a Thursday statement that the fast food chain is actively working to “voluntarily remove potentially impacted lettuce from a supplier in select states.”

“The affected ingredient from our supplier is being indefinitely removed from our supply chain nationwide and will be replaced within 24 hours in…

Bell Canada says it has reached a key milestone toward launching satellite-to-mobile coverage after it finished building a ground station in Quebec.

Last fall, the telecommunications company announced plans to launch space-based cellular service through a partnership with Texas-based AST SpaceMobile using low-earth orbit satellites.

Bell said testing has begun at the ground station facility, which connects with AST SpaceMobile’s satellite constellation to integrate its space-based cellular broadband network with Bell’s terrestrial network. The site will form part of the Canadian infrastructure supporting direct-to-device satellite service.

The company has completed integration testing, including text messaging, data connectivity, voice call and video call tests on standard smartphones through its ground station, with plans to test video streaming, public alerts and other features in the coming weeks.

The technology is meant to keep Bell customers connected in areas beyond the reach of traditional wireless networks, such as northern communities and remote coastal regions.

“The satellite ground infrastructure we’re building is designed to support a full suite of direct-to-device capabilities … helping extend connectivity to remote and underserved areas,” said Bell executive vice-president and chief technology officer Mark McDonald in a news release.

“Together with Bell’s world-class wireless network, it will help keep customers connected wherever they live, work and travel.”

Bell is aiming to launch its satellite coverage early next year.

Chris Ivory, chief commercial officer for AST SpaceMobile, said customers should expect a “seamless connectivity experience” on their smartphones.

“Canada’s vast and diverse geography presents a unique need to extend cellular broadband beyond the reach of traditional terrestrial infrastructure,” Ivory said in a news release.

Competitor Rogers Communications Inc. launched its own version of satellite-to-mobile service a year ago in partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, combining its wireless network with Starlink’s low-earth orbit satellites to connect cellphones in dead zones.

Rogers initially offered text message capability for beta users before adding WhatsApp voice and video calling in December.

Other apps such as Google Maps now work through Rogers Satellite as well, and the company previously said it planned to enable traditional cellphone…

As people around the world tune into this summer’s World Cup, some of the brands generating the most buzz aren’t even official sponsors of the tournament.

The list of official sponsors for this year’s World Cup, hosted in cities across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, include global household names like Adidas, Coca-Cola and Qatar Airways.

But even before the tournament began, the spotlight fell on companies like Levi Strauss & Co., Taco Bell and Texas-based convenience store chain Buc-ee’s. Some have garnered traction on social media for their creative marketing strategies, while others have benefited from organic customer response with the influx of international players and fans.

McDonald’s celebrated the tournament with limited-time menu items and cups. Taco Bell leaned into a new campaign to support fans in celebration or support depending on the outcome of a match.

According to marketing research firm WARC Media, advertising spending on this year’s World Cup tournament is expected to reach $10.5 billion. That’s just below spending for the 2018 World Cup, hosted by Russia, which totaled roughly $12.6 billion.

Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower told CNBC that World Cup advertising spend increased 42% week over week in the days leading up to the first game. The firm tracked that Taco Bell and Duracell have both increased their advertising spend in the past few weeks, though the top 10 World Cup advertisers by spend over the past three months have been sponsors or broadcast partners of the event.

According to market research firm Meltwater, in the ramp-up to the World Cup, non-sponsor brand collaborations generated nearly double the engagement of official sponsors, reaching roughly 61 million engagements versus just 33 million.

The firm told CNBC that while sponsored advertisements led in volume, distribution and creative quality helped propel non-sponsors to higher engagement, with the most social media engagement coming from TikTok.

Since the tournament began, non-sponsor brands have surpassed 57,000 mentions on social media versus just over 43,000 for official sponsors, the company said.

“A big takeaway from this World Cup is that you don’t need an official sponsorship to own the cultural moment anymore,” Meltwater CEO John Box told CNBC. “The brands that will win the next tournament aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets, but instead the ones who are set up to see what’s trending in real time, the creativity to connect it back to your brand, and the speed to act before the moment passes.”

Bell Canada’s parent company, BCE, has confirmed it is cutting another 690 jobs as part of a reorganization effort that began late last year.

The company says the cuts include about 230 unionized roles, and that in most cases employees are being offered voluntary separation packages.

“These changes are part of our ongoing business operations and reflect several initiatives,” Bell said in an email to CBC News, “including the migration of customers to a more resilient, easier-to-maintain fibre network and ongoing operating efficiencies.”

Bell cut nearly 700 jobs last November, mostly non-unionized management positions, from across the country.

BCE annouced last October that it was seeking to find $1.5 billion in total cost savings by 2028 through a “companywide transformation and continued focus on operational efficiencies.”

In 2024, BCE slashed nine per cent of its workforce, affecting about 4,800 jobs, as part of a shakeup that also saw it offload dozens of radio stations and end multiple television newscasts.

That came after the elimination of around 1,300 positions — about three per cent of its workforce at the time — in June 2023.

Last month, BCE reported a profit attributable to common shareholders of $616 million or 66 cents per diluted share in its latest quarter. That compared with a profit of $630 million or 68 cents per diluted share in the first quarter of 2025.

During an earnings call, BCE chief executive Mirko Bibic said the company has raised its revenue target for its growing AI business by one-third as it moves forward with plans to build a cluster of data centres.

BCE now expects to generate around $2 billion in revenue from its portfolio of AI-powered enterprise solutions by 2028. That’s up from its previous objective of $1.5 billion in revenue over three years.

Along with fibre, wireless and digital media, the company has pointed to AI-powered enterprise solutions as a key pillar of the three-year plan.

Canadian corporate giant BCE, which owns Bell, has fired a number of workers for violating policies around workplace attendance or working from home, but CBC News has learned the company is facing allegations the terminations were unjustified and used to avoid paying severance.

In an email to employees obtained by CBC News, Bell’s chief human resources officer Nikki Moffat said terminated employees were “misrepresenting their presence in the workplace” — though now-fired workers have been disputing that claim on social media and in conversations with CBC News.

In addition to accusations those fired were deceptive about when they were in the workplace, Bell claims some terminated workers were caught “swiping in and leaving shortly after,” according to Moffat’s email.

Not so, say workers contacted by CBC News, as well as Jean-Alexandre De Bousquet, a lawyer representing at least 30 terminated Bell workers.

“I would say most of those people have never worked in the office, not even before the pandemic,” said De Bousquet. The Mississauga-based employment lawyer said he has been contacted by more than 30 fired Bell employees and believes there could be “hundreds.”

A Bell representative told CBC News the company disagrees with the claim hundreds have been terminated, saying that number is inaccurate. Bell would not provide specific details on how many people have been terminated or confirm any names of those affected, but the company said only a “small number” of employees were fired.

A recent Angus Reid survey suggests the majority of workers would prefer a fully remote or hybrid workplace, but many employers are opting to have employees in the office more often.

Bell said it’s been policy for corporate office employees to be in the office at least two days a week since 2022 and three days since 2023. But De Bousquet and his clients dispute that.

“We’re talking about people who have been hired 12 years ago and never stepped foot in the office … they never agreed to this,” said De Bousquet. “It was a unilateral change by Bell.”

Multiple Bell employees contacted CBC News to advise that not only were they never required to work in the office under strict policies before, but their immediate managers had explicitly approved the very working arrangements they were terminated for.

“They were getting different and contradictory messages. … Their managers would say, ‘well, no, as long as you come in and swipe your fob, you don’t have to stay the whole day,'” said De Bousquet, who is in the process of filing multiple claims in court for employees in Ontario and Quebec.

De Bousquet says many of his clients were not given warnings or suspensions before they were fired.

He and several of the terminated workers have said it is their opinion that Bell fired them for economic reasons, and the company is claiming…

The latter deal will give the AI startup access to about 3.5 gigawatts worth of computing capacity, drawing on Google’s AI processors and providing some relief for the share price.

Broadcom stock has endured a tough start to 2025, falling almost 10% year-to-date as investors have become increasingly jittery around the bull case for technology stocks. It has also been caught up in the maelstrom of the wider market caused by the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran that began on February 28.

The drift downwards comes despite a blowout earnings report in March, during which CEO Hock Tan touted strong future demand for the company’s chips.

He told analysts last month that he anticipates AI chip revenue in 2027 that’s “significantly in excess of $100 billion” as demand mounts for designing custom silicon.

Analysts remain bullish following Monday’s announcements.

“The deal includes revenue commitments across that timeline, which should help ease some of the recent nervousness around TPU competition and give a clearer signal that its largest customer sees meaningful demand visibility well into the future,” said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown.

“We already saw upside to medium-term revenue and profit expectations off the back of recent results; these new deals help underpin that idea if deployment ramps as planned.”

Citi analysts maintained their ‘Buy’ rating for the stock, backing Broadcom to surpass its $100 billion revenue target to more than $130 billion off the back of the Google deal.

— CNBC’s Jordan Novet also contributed to this report.

Sweeney wore jeans and a light blue denim jacket at the NYSE, an apparent nod to the “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” slogan that was released last summer.

The widely discussed campaign drew criticism, with some detractors arguing that its wordplay blurred the line between fashion marketing and references to genetic traits.

“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color,” the “Euphoria” star said in the video. “My jeans are blue.”

President Donald Trump defended Sweeney in a Truth Social post, saying in part, “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there.

“Value” was the buzzword du jour for restaurant executives that lasted all year — and it will likely stick around in 2026, too.

Over the last year and a half, diners, particularly those who make less than $40,000 a year, have been eating out less frequently and spending less money when they do. Higher costs, like rent and child care, have put pressure on consumers’ wallets. Plus, uncertainty about the economy, President Donald Trump’s higher tariffs, layoff fears and immigration crackdowns have all hurt their willingness to spend.

As diners strain under pressures on their wallets, restaurants, takeout and food delivery is the category where discretionary spending is most likely to fall, according to the EY-Parthenon U.S. Consumer Sentiment Survey. Nearly a quarter of respondents said that they would first cut spending on eating out, ahead of entertainment, travel and home maintenance.

It’s no surprise, then, that data from Black Box Intelligence shows that traffic to restaurants open at least a year fell every month this year through November, with one exception: July. That month, guest count ticked up 0.1%.

To win back a shrinking pool of diners, restaurants have responded by doubling down on efforts to offer diners more “value.” In the fast-food segment, that means combo meals and value menus.

For casual-dining chains, value has translated into appetizer deals, marketing that compares the narrowing price gap with fast food, and a focus on the in-restaurant experience. And fast-casual chains have responded by emphasizing their quality while trying to stay away from the so-called value wars.

“This is the most intense discount environment since the Great Recession,” Cava co-founder and CEO Brett Schulman said on the company’s earnings conference call in November.

McDonald’s value push

To understand the industry’s evolving value strategy, look no further than McDonald’s, the largest U.S. restaurant chain by sales and often a bellwether for the consumer economy.

The burger giant briefly became the poster child for higher fast-food prices in 2024, leading the company to make a rare public rebuttal against social media posts claiming that its prices had more than doubled since 2019. But that didn’t stop consumers from viewing its prices as too high, which put the company on the defensive. In 2024, it launched a $5 value meal in the U.S. in a bid to attract the low-income consumers who had been cutting back on their visits.

As the value gap closed between casual-dining chains like Chili’s and fast-food restaurants, McDonald’s and its peers haven’t benefitted from the spending pullback the way they typically would when consumer spending falls, according to Moody’s analyst Michael Zuccaro.

This year, McDonald’s further stepped up its emphasis on value. It extended the $5 value meal months longer than expected and added a buy one, get one for $1 deal for select…

Bell Canada says it’s cutting approximately 690 employees, mostly managers, to help reduce debt and drive growth. The cuts follow thousands of company layoffs last year.

This time Bell says it’s axing about 650 non-unionized management positions across the country, representing less than two per cent of its workforce.

Canada’s largest communications company said it’s also cutting approximately 40 jobs at Bell Media, its media and entertainment subsidiary.

“We made the difficult but necessary decision” to cut manager jobs to advance the company’s three-year strategic plan to deliver “sustainable growth,” Bell told CBC News in an email.

It did not provide further explanation for the Bell Media job cuts, but said that it thanks the laid off employees “for their dedication and contributions.”

Earlier this year, Bell offered severance packages to 1,200 unionized employees, attributing the move to “unprecedented challenges” in the telecommunications industry.

Canada’s telecom industry has seen a slowdown in growth over the last year, and major players like BCE and Rogers have shed some of their assets in an effort to reduce costs.

Bell sold its 37.5 per cent ownership stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) to Rogers for $4.7 billion last September. It announced a few months later that it would buy U.S. telecom company Ziply for $5 billion.

The company has cut thousands of jobs in the last year and a half. That includes 1,300 cuts in June 2023, and, in February 2024, Bell announced that it laid off 4,800 employees and would shutter several dozen radio stations, plus further layoffs aimed at technical staff in June the same year.
