The firms say they’re in a “cat and mouse game” against alleged North Korean hackers who are using a combination of crypto obfuscation techniques and professional global money laundering networks to turn their digital coins into fiat currency, according to experts who spoke to CNBC.

These moves underscore how hard it can be to recover the stolen funds after a crypto hack.

“Ultimately, they’re [hackers] trying to off-ramp it [crypto] to fiat. And that becomes the challenge, that’s sort of this race against time,” Ari Redbord, global head of policy at TRM Labs, one of the companies investigating the Binance hack, told CNBC on Friday.

Binance pledged to cover losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users.

Both TRM Labs and Chainalysis have attributed the Binance hack to a North Korean state-backed hacking group called TraderTraitor, which has a history of crypto cyberattacks.

Binance estimates that around $3 billion worth of cryptocurrency has been frozen so far.

The issuers of the stablecoins could burn and reissue the tokens and potentially recover those losses. In this scenario, a company like Circle or Tether would effectively destroy the frozen stablecoins, making them inaccessible to hackers. They could reissue new stablecoins that could be held in a legal government entity and then given back to Binance.

The hackers were one step ahead. They quickly moved to sell USDT to market makers and borrow the cryptocurrency ether against the stablecoin, according to TRM Labs. Ether is harder to freeze, and the entity the hackers borrowed from would be left with the stolen stablecoin.

“The attackers knew that route would be closed to them and so got out ahead of that,” said Joe Hancock, a partner and head of cyber risk and complex investigations at law firm Mishcon de Reya.

Obfuscating stolen funds

Hackers have used sophisticated tactics to evade law enforcement and keep authorities from seizing the roughly $3 billion that remains.

Cryptocurrencies run on blockchains, which are public ledgers of transactions. That means crypto forensic firms can track the movement of crypto across different online wallets. So hackers use various techniques to throw investigators off their trail.

Crypto mixer services obscure the trail of cryptocurrency by mixing funds from different users, making it harder to track the money.

Jonathan Levin, CEO of Chainalysis, told CNBC there are no signs of this happening yet.

Instead, his company observed “laundering patterns we have not seen…

It’s a major setback for CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who was hired in March 2025, and has since been on a campaign to revive the company after it missed out on the early years of the artificial intelligence boom.

Intel’s plunge is also a big hit to the Trump administration, which led the U.S. government into taking a 10% stake in the company over a year ago. While it’s still a profitable investment, the value of those holdings dropped by about $12 billion on Friday. Nvidia also took a big stake in Intel, and its stock dropped by about $6 billion in value.

Heading into Thursday’s earnings report, Intel shares were up about 150% this year, buoyed by demand for central processors, which are becoming critical to agentic AI workloads. Analysts at D.A. Davidson downgraded the stock to neutral from buy on Friday in a report titled, “Not fixed yet.”

“We understand the PC market is being impacted at the industry level,” the analysts wrote. “However it is hard to justify the current multiple when weakness is so significant.”

A record-breaking hack at Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is a reminder of the risks investors take when trusting a company to hold their digital tokens.

Binance said Friday that the security breach affected about $6.3 billion in client assets, making it the largest crypto hack on record. Around $3 billion of the affected assets has been frozen on blockchain networks, and the exchange says it has begun recovering some of them.

Binance’s initial investigation suggests hackers gained access to the firm’s withdrawal systems and were able to make unauthorized transfers from the exchange’s crypto wallets, according to the company. The company says it has found no evidence that the private keys controlling those wallets were leaked and is still investigating the full scope of the breach.

The company says it will cover customers’ losses. Binance maintains a roughly $1 billion emergency fund known as SAFU, which was created to protect customers in the event of a security breach. The company initially said SAFU and company funds would cover the losses, and has since said it has set aside more than $6.3 billion of its own funds.

For crypto investors, the Binance breach highlights one of the risks of keeping assets on an exchange. While exchanges make it easier to buy, sell and store crypto, what happens after a hack can vary widely, including whether customers get their money back.

What happens to your crypto when an exchange gets hacked

Crypto exchange hacks aren’t uncommon. Hackers stole roughly $1.5 billion from Dubai-based exchange Bybit in 2025, while Seychelles-registered Bitget lost more than $387 million in a hack in September 2026.

But a hack doesn’t necessarily mean customers will lose their money permanently. Stolen assets can sometimes be recovered or frozen — preventing the hackers from moving or cashing them out — and exchanges may also have insurance, dedicated emergency funds or other company resources available to cover losses.

In Binance’s case, roughly half of the affected assets have already been frozen, preventing some of the stolen crypto from being moved. Its roughly $1 billion SAFU emergency reserve provides another backstop, if needed.

Customers don’t always recover stolen digital assets quickly. New Zealand exchange Cryptopia was forced into liquidation months after a 2019 hack in which about NZ$30 million in crypto was stolen. The liquidation process stretched on for years, with the first distributions finally beginning in 2024.

“When you leave crypto on an exchange, you are relying on that company’s controls and its balance sheet,” says Martin Mulyadi, YHB Endowed Chair in Accounting and professor of accounting at Shenandoah University. “A pledge to make customers whole is only as strong as the resources behind it.”

What you should look for when choosing a crypto exchange

When considering where to transact in and hold crypto, start by researching the exchange itself. The Securities and Exchange…

After learning the world’s largest crypto exchange had been hit by a $6.3 billion hack late Thursday, Musk posted several emojis, ranging from laughing to grimacing, on X.

In response, Zhao reminded the SpaceX and Tesla CEO of Binance’s equity stake in Musk’s businesses.

Binance’s SpaceX stake, which stems from an earlier investment in what was then-Twitter, is worth more than $1 billion, Zhao said.

That’s a tiny fraction of SpaceX’s roughly $2 trillion valuation.

“Elon, have a lot of respect for you, but bad time to troll. Please stop,” Zhao wrote. “Our SPCX shares (from our $500m investment in your Twitter takeover) are worth more than a billion. Would appreciate if you show a little support. Thanks!”

It’s not the first time the pair has sparred online.

In Nov. 2021, Binance suspended Dogecoin withdrawals because of a wallet glitch, a measure Musk called “shady”. In reply, Zhao highlighted a major Tesla recall of almost 12,000 U.S. vehicles due to software glitches and hardware issues.

Binance froze all withdrawals and deposits after the hack, which investigators suspect to be the work of North Korean state-sponsored hacking unit TraderTraitor. It has since restored deposits.

Around $3 billion in cryptocurrency assets have been frozen so far.

Shares of Reddit cratered 29.22% on Friday, the worst drop since becoming a public company in 2024, after the company forecast weak fourth-quarter sales in its latest earnings report.

The previous record low was set on July 31, when the stock dropped 20.99%.

The social media company on Thursday projected fourth-quarter sales between $1 billion and $1.03 billion, below analysts’ estimates of $1.05 billion. Reddit reported Q3 sales growth of 53% over a year ago, weaker than previous quarters, but beat Wall Street expectations on both earnings and revenue.

The report comes as the company has seen a shift in its search referral traffic with the rise of Google’s AI Overview. In an interview with CNBC, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said search-referral traffic from Google went “down meaningfully in this quarter” due to AI.

Reddit announced on Thursday that it plans to test requiring users to log in to access content, a dramatic change from a site whose community-based discussion content has become synonymous with the open internet. Google’s shift towards pushing AI overviews in search results coincided with the change, intended to help boost the number of logged-in users that are more active on the platform, which in turn helps the company’s advertising business, according to Huffman.

“Reddit is the last platform to provide basically unfettered logged-out access, and that’s largely because of me. I’ve been holding that line,” Huffman said. “I think users will probably go through the same understanding that I have, which is that it’s a sign of the times. It’s an evolution of how these platforms work.”

Multiple analysts downgraded the stock following Reddit’s disappointing results, with Citizens noting that “search changes highlight the problem with selling content to Google” and that as referral problems worsen, uncertainty around user growth amid the login requirement switch “puts more pressure on user monetization.”

— CNBC’s Jonathan Vanian contributed to this report.

Billionaire venture capitalist Reid Hoffman has put $8 million into the Democratic Party of Wisconsin over the past five weeks to help the party’s gubernatorial nominee David Crowley in his race against Republican Tom Tiffany.

The LinkedIn co-founder gave $2 million on Sept. 24, $1 million on Oct. 2 and another $5 million in two installments on Oct. 5 and Oct. 20, according to Wisconsin campaign finance records. The rapid-fire checks are part of a last-minute spending spree by some of America’s richest donors before Election Day.

In just the past week and a half, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave Democratic Texas gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa $750,000, while Y Combinator co-founder Jessica Livingston chipped in another $150,000, state records show.

Bloomberg had already committed roughly $80 million to help Democrats this fall, much of it aimed at winning control of the House.

Meanwhile, PayPal co-founder Luke Nosek gave $500,000 on Tuesday to Judicial Fairness PAC, which supports conservative judicial candidates in Texas, according to Texas campaign finance records. The group had already received $2 million from Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, according to state records. Musk’s roughly $475 million in disclosed political giving through late October makes him the cycle’s biggest known individual donor.

The checks are landing in the middle of a final-week ad frenzy, with more than $1 billion now booked to air before Election Day, according to AdImpact. The 2026 cycle has already broken the record for political ad spending, with more than $11.2 billion spent or reserved, according to AdImpact. That’s more than any previous presidential election cycle as well.

Hoffman has framed his own spending as a reluctant necessity.

“We should get money out of politics,” Hoffman wrote Friday on X. “And while others spend outrageous amounts to keep authoritarian clowns in power, those of us who believe in the ideals of America cannot yield.”

The House Majority PAC, the main super PAC working to elect House Democrats, has received $8.5 million from Hoffman this cycle, according to Federal Election Commission records.

In the past two weeks, the group has rolled out 13 ads related to disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. They total about $8.4 million in spending and nearly 719.4 million impressions, according to AdImpact. Until this month, it had not run a single Epstein-focused ad.

The spots have pushed Epstein into at least six battleground House races, accusing Republicans of helping block the release of government records related to Epstein or highlighting their ties to people in his orbit.

In Arizona’s Second District, an ad called “Justice” attacked Republican Rep. Eli Crane over votes related to releasing the Epstein files and contributions from alleged Epstein associates. In Pennsylvania’s Eighth District, ads called “Predators” and “Teacher” targeted Republican Rep.
Within 24 hours of the U.S. and Israel going to war with Iran, Tehran responded with a wave of attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz to cut off one of the world’s main sources of crude oil.

Iran’s campaign was initially successful, with crude exports plunging nearly 90% to 1.8 million barrels a day in March compared with 16 million bpd in February, according to data provided by Kpler.

But crude flows have rebounded over the past eight months as the U.S. military provides protection to tankers transiting Hormuz. Tehran has responded by escalating its attacks in recent weeks.

More commercial ships have come under attack in October than at any other point in the war. Yet in contrast to March when exports cratered, tankers have continued to ferry substantial volumes of crude oil through Hormuz in a sign that the shipping industry has adapted to wartime in the Persian Gulf.

As of Oct. 27, at least 30 vessels, mostly oil tankers, were hit this month leaving at minimum 16 seafarers injured, according to data from the International Maritime Organization, a United Nations agency. Ship attacks doubled in October compared with 15 confirmed incidents in September.

“It’s a difficult situation. Ships are attacked really on a daily basis,” said Jakob Larsen, chief safety and security officer at Denmark-headquartered BIMCO, one of the big international shipping trade associations.

Oil prices rise, but flows are resilient

Crude prices have surged more than 13% this month as security conditions have deteriorated in the Persian Gulf. The international Brent contract traded above $117 a barrel on Friday. That’s just shy of its wartime closing high of $118.35 during Iran’s big wave of ship attacks in March.

Yet actual crude exports through Hormuz stood at nearly 11.1 million bpd on average in October, only about 2% lower from September despite the sharp escalation of violence, Kpler’s data shows.

“On balance in terms of oil coming out, there hasn’t been a massive impact,” said Mary Melton, senior tanker analyst at Braemar, a ship broker headquartered in London.

Crude flows through Hormuz are highly volatile on a daily basis with exports near prewar levels one day while falling well below such levels another day. The final leg of October has seen flows decline to 7.3 million bpd for the week ended Wednesday, more than 40% below the prewar baseline, according to Kpler.

Oil flows are more resilient now because the shipping industry has adjusted its operations to the threats, Larsen said. Freight rates have soared, making it “more attractive for the risk takers in the industry to actually carry out these voyages,” he said.

“And when the cost of oil goes up that also means that there’s more commercial incentives to get the oil out and sell it in the global market,” Larsen said.

A federal judge in Alaska on Friday kept on a fast track efforts to dismiss a Department of Justice lawsuit that seeks to delay certification of the state’s U.S. Senate election because of possible voter confusion from having two Dan Sullivans — one of whom is the incumbent Republican — on the ballot.

Judge Sharon Gleason ordered the DOJ to respond by 1 p.m. Alaska Time Friday to the new dismissal motions, which were filed hours after the department amended its suit in U.S. District Court in Anchorage on Thursday to add a new legal claim.

The DOJ’s updating of the civil complaint forced Gleason to rule the prior dismissal motions were moot.

Gleason gave state election officials, the campaign of Democratic nominee Mary Peltola, and other groups until noon Saturday to reply to the DOJ’s response.

The judge’s order leaves open the possibility that she will rule on the dismissal motions before Tuesday, which is Election Day, as both the state and Peltola’s campaign have asked.

The state, the campaign, and other intervenors in the suit argue the DOJ has no legal authority to block certification of an election because two candidates on a four-candidate ballot happen to share the same name.

The winner of Alaska’s race could determine which party holds a majority in the Senate in January. Republicans currently have 53 seats in the 100-member chamber.

Alaska’s election uses ranked choice. If no candidate obtains more than 50% of the vote in the first count, then the fourth-place finisher will be eliminated, and the second choice on that candidate’s ballots will be allocated to the remaining candidates.

Only Peltola and Sen. Sullivan are considered likely to draw large shares of the votes.

The DOJ’s suit seeks to delay certification of the Senate election if Sen. Sullivan loses by a margin that could be attributable to voter confusion over the presence of the other candidate, who is listed as Daniel J. Sullivan, on the ballot.

The amended complaint, which updates the suit filed on Oct. 23, added a claim under the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution to the first claim, under the National Voter Registration Act.

The DOJ also included details of a New York Times article published on Wednesday that reported that Peltola campaign aides and senior aides at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee helped recruit the retired school teacher Danel J. Sullivan to enter the Senate race with the hope of drawing votes from the incumbent Sullivan.

Peltola’s campaign and the DSCC deny being involved in the retiree’s Senate campaign.

Peltola’s campaign, in its dismissal motion filed Thursday, said, “Rather than defend its indefensible legal claims as it was ordered to do, the Department of Justice … has filed an Amended Complaint that does nothing to address the fatal problems that preclude it from bringing this case or obtaining the relief that it seeks.”

“The U.S. Constitution leaves the regulation of federal elections exclusively to the States and to…

Binance was hacked with an estimated impact of $6.3 billion, raising questions about the recovery of stolen funds and the broader fallout for crypto markets. Around $3 billion in cryptocurrency assets have been frozen so far.

The exchange pledged to cover all losses, while blockchain investigators linked the attack to North Korea and analysts assessed the potential financial risks.

Bitcoin was under pressure on Friday and was trading below $78,000.

Can frozen funds be recovered?

Freezing cryptocurrency prevents it from being transferred, but recovering the funds requires a separate legal process, according to Ari Redbord, global head of policy at blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs and a former U.S. federal prosecutor and Treasury official.

“A freeze stops the money from moving, and recovery follows through legal process,” Redbord told CNBC.

Redbord said law enforcement typically obtains a court order or seizure warrant before working with stablecoin issuers to release or reissue assets and return them to their rightful owners.

“Stablecoins are the most recoverable asset class in crypto because the issuer controls the token contract,” he said. “Tether and Circle can freeze, burn and reissue, which allows frozen USDT and USDC to be returned to a victim.”

But recovering bitcoin and ether is more challenging because they have no issuer that can directly freeze the assets. Instead, investigators must trace funds through exchanges and other crypto services where they can potentially be intercepted, added Redbord.

Eric Jardine, head of research at blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, said returning frozen assets requires coordination among law enforcement, exchanges and token issuers.

“There is no standard recovery timeline. A technical freeze may happen quickly, while returning funds can take months or years,” Jardine told CNBC.

Jardine added that while bitcoin and ether cannot be frozen by an issuer, they can still be traced and potentially recovered. Investigators can trace the funds on public blockchains and intervene when they reach a cooperating exchange or another centralized platform, he said.

The FBI previously identified the same group as responsible for the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025, according to the company’s insights.

TRM Labs said the Binance attack shared characteristics with previous North Korea-linked incidents, including preparations made well before the theft and transaction signatures obtained in advance.

The firm estimated that approximately $6.36 billion in digital assets were moved from Binance wallets across 10 blockchains, with most transferred within about 20 minutes.

TRM Labs said preparations for the attack began at least 36 hours before the theft, with the attackers using Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixing service, to fund their…

An oil refinery in the Russian city of Novokuibyshevsk in Samara Oblast that produced jet fuel for the Russian armed forces was set on fire after being hit by a Ukrainian drone.

Late Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had destroyed two Russian Su-34 fighter jets and struck an Iskander missile launcher.

He also warned that Russia was preparing further high-speed missile attacks and urged Ukraine’s allies to urgently supply more air defense interceptors, particularly for Patriot systems.

“We now have intel about the Russians preparing new ballistic missile attacks,” Zelenskyy said in an evening address from Kyiv. “We need the capabilities to shoot down this Russian evil and are awaiting the decisions,” he added, referring to anti-ballistic defense capabilities provided by allies.

Ukraine is facing an acute shortage of interceptors to shoot down incoming Russian ballistic missiles.

Early Thursday, at least 14 people were killed in an attack on a Ukrainian rail platform in Dnipro, while at least six more people died in additional strikes throughout the day, according to officials.

The attacks came as a six-day local ceasefire in Kherson in southern Ukraine appeared to hold for a third day, raising cautious optimism that a broader truce may be possible.

While attempts at a peace deal have so far been unsuccessful, a new round of U.S.-brokered peace negotiations is expected next month in Abu Dhabi. Both sides have emphasized the need for security guarantees.

Tensions have run high between Zelenskyy and…
